Type of documentary- This documentary is self-narrated by Bob
Gruen and is based on his experience as a photographer when
looking into rock and roll.
2. Themes
• The main theme in this documentary is in the name, rock and
roll. It also focuses on the music industry in the time period
1970-1980. It’s about the career of a photographer Bob
Gruen. It explains the punk and alternative music lifestyle, and
rock culture- Iconography.
3. Narrative Structure
• This documentary has a linear narrative structure. It charts
the journey of a photographer, the people he meets, what he
does, where he goes and how he feels throughout. The
documentary is told from his perspective, and includes
interviews with famous people such as Alice Cooper.
4. Camera Work
• A variety of camera angles were used during the making of
the documentary. Using typical documentary convention such
as talking head shot or a rule of third shot during interviews.
• Bob Gruen was filmed on two different cameras using a close
up with one camera and a medium close up with the other,
this added emphasis and emotion.

5. Mise-en-scene
• During interviews low key lighting was used to create a photo
element, which tied in to the documentary, and almost
created the dark red environment used years ago to develop
photographs.
• Many of the interviews were filmed in front of a stage or
other musical equipment to set the scene.
• The interviewing of Alice Cooper had a colourful backdrop
which presented her as a bright and energetic person to the
audience.
• The clothes that many of the interviewee’s reflects what is
talked about in this documentary, that being the clothes worn
in this era.. The Punk era.
6. Sound
• During each interview, the music was synchronous to the
person being interviewed.
• There were many cross dissolves between music tracks being
played.
• The music volume levels would change throughout the
documentary to allow the audience to hear people speaking.
• There were sound bridges between sound tracks.
7. Editing
• Zooms and pans of still images.
• Super imposition.
• Morphing images and interviews together.
8. Archive Material
• Most of the documentary is Archive material, this is
because it focuses on the photography of Bob Gruen.
It features photos of punk artists and footage of their
performances.
9. Graphics
• There are a lot of static graphics used
throughout this documentary.
• An Arial font was used to fit the purpose of
the documentary.
