chosen for a thriller movie usually gives the viewer an
insight to how the character is feeling, at that precise
moment. Sound also allows the viewer to figure out the
type of relation that characters’ have in the movie. This
helps the audience to suspect the next action of the
character. In addition to this non-diegetic sound can be
used to enhance the effect of editing techniques, this is
done to create tension among the audience. Sound is used
in all genres of movies so it increases the effect on the
audience.

4. Mirrors are used in thrillers for reflection purposes.
This is done so the audience is able to see a reflection
of the characters’ soul. Reflection highlights the type
of person that the character is, this is mostly done to
enhance the darkness of the characters personality.

5. Shadows in thriller movies are usually used during low
key lighting. They are used to represent a dark entity
within a character, due to the colour of the shadow.
Besides this shadows are mostly exercised when a
person is walking behind another person. This creates
tension because it prevents the viewer from seeing
the physical appearance of the individual, and the
individuals motives are unknown.

6. Obtrusive editing and quick shots are used commonly
in thriller films, this is used to emphasise the feeling
of tension, fear and suspense to the viewers’. This
type of editing is normally used in the climax of the
thrillers’, to create disorientation at that particular
time.

7. Flashbacks grant’s the viewer to see a certain time
and space that the director and writer wants the
viewer to see. This can do two things either confuse
or consolidate the information that the viewer
already knows, allowing the viewer to put it into
perspective. Flashbacks can make the viewer see the
past, for the viewer to understand more about the
characters’ and their lifestyle.
