Thriller
The genre of thriller consist of
suspense, building tension, and
leading the viewer to be excited and
thrilled for what comes next. Further,
films in the thriller genre are
characterized by the emotions they
enforce on the viewer such as the
feelings of anxiety,
surprise/suspense, and anticipation.
This genre of films is well known to
make its viewers stand at the edge
of their seats.
2. Camera Angels,
Movements, and
Shots
. The genre of thriller applies different camera angels,
movements, and shots in order to create suspenseful scenes. This
includes close ups and extreme close ups in order to display clear
emotion due to that the closer the camera is to the actor's face
(especially the eyes), the more it will give the viewer a well-defined
emotion therefore adding to the dramatic tension. Further, thriller's
uses high angles shots in order to make the actor seem isolated and
uncomfortable to its surroundings while also making them appear
vulnerable and as they are being looked down upon from a higher
perspective that holds a higher power. This angel is also used to
make the character appear frightened. Additionally, low angel shots
are used in thrillers in order to provide the character with a stance of
power and in some cases to make them look aggressive. Further,
canted angels are commonly used in thrillers as they portray states
such as madness, frantic episodes, and unease, just to name a few.
This angel is used to give the viewer a sense of disorientation
therefore a feeling of uneasiness. Moreover, panning shots are
commonly found in thrillers as they encourage the viewer to search
for something and it can also be used to show an isolated/crowded
area. Further, thrillers are known to use wide shots and extreme wide
shots in order to emphasize the space around someone or something
to make it seem isolated. Lastly, a common camera movement found
in thrillers are zooms in order to create more dramatic effects.
3. Common
Sounds in
Thrillers
. Non-diegetic sounds are
commonly used in thrillers in order to
create feelings of apprehension and
uncertainty. A piano is instrument
used for thrillers as they can have a
soft tone that creates security to then
making a drastic change in mood to
create suspense.
. Diegetic sound are also
commonly used in thrillers such as
rain, footsteps, thunderstorms,
creaking floorboards, gasps,
screams, loud crashes, and wind,
just to name a few.
4. Common Mis-En-Scene
Common Mis-En-Scene in the thriller genre is that the setting usually takes place in
locations with dark surrounding such as a dark alley or a haunted house. In regard to
costumes, characters in thrillers usually wear normal clothing in order to add realism to the
situation and make the viewer feel that what is happening on screen could happen to them.
Further, the characters usually have limited amounts of make up in order for the viewer to be
able to relate, also they commonly express fear for women through smudge eye makeup to
show as if they were crying . In addition, various kinds of low lighting levels are used in thrillers
in order to create a mysterious and suspenseful tone for the film. The low levels of lighting
creates shadows which aids in creating tension and fear within the audience and the director
usually uses color to identify emotion therefor meaning that a film within the thriller genre
usually has a very dark color palette.
5. Common
Editing in
Thrillers
Films within the thriller genre
usually use jump cuts as it causes an
abrupt transition between two shots
that break continuity, this helps
convey distortion within a scene or
character. A jump cut is also used to
display weakness within a character.
Further, shot reverse shots are
commonly used throughout thriller
films due to that they show the
altercation between characters while
they are having a conversation. In
addition, foreshadowing is used in
thrillers in order increase
tension/suspense in narrative.
