Controlled drugs such as narcotics and psychotropic agents are regulated under the Misuse of Drugs Act of 1975 and classified into three classes - Class A, Class B, and Class C - with Class B and C further divided into parts. Controlled drugs in hospitals are kept locked up with a controlled drug register recording drugs received and administered by staff, including the number, balance after each use, and balances checked each shift.
