CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT
This presentation aims to:
• enhance comprehension of the fundamental principles of continuous assessment;
• offer a structure to guide Faculty decision-making concerning the incorporation of continuous
assessment in undergraduate programs.
WHAT IS CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT?
Continuous assessment is an alternative to traditional university assessment methods, evaluates
students' ongoing progress in achieving module outcomes.
It replaces the conventional approach where assessment tasks contribute to a final examination mark.
 This method ensures consistent student engagement, offering feedback and support.
Additionally, continuous assessment encourages critical awareness and self-monitoring, fostering
student responsibility for learning.
This approach combines both formative and summative assessment tasks for a comprehensive
evaluation model.
All assessment, whether formative or summative, is designed to improve learning.
However, formative assessment is primarily diagnostic, while summative is an evaluation of the sum of students’
learning.

The following is a summary of the major strategies for ContinuousAssessment
practices :
Self-Assessment: In this strategy, each student is required to assess his/ her work and recognize what he/she knows and
what he/she needs to learn to improve his/her performance.
Peer-Assessment: It is the process whereby learners are encouraged to give feedback on each other’s learning following
certain instructions provided by the teacher.
Take-Home Assignments: Take home assignments are assignments with specific instructions given by the teacher to be
accomplished outside the classroom. The objective of the assignment should be explained to students to help them meet
the project requirements and practice what they have learnt.
Oral Presentation:This CA practice improves critical thinking, the use of authentic language in an interactive context,
and self- confidence among students.
Portfolios: A portfolio is a collection of students’ works which reflects their performance
Projects provide students with a context for collaboration and shared learning in addition to creativity and
imagination. Therefore, projects, either individual or cooperative, help learners to become more active and
independent, develop critical thinking, self-esteem, and provide effective feedback and interaction between
members of the group.
Quizzes/Tests: They belong to the traditional mode of assessment. They are usually used for assessing
students’ acquisition of content.
