Nehemiah and the Israelites faced opposition as they worked to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Sanballat, Tobiah, and others mocked their efforts and said the wall would not stand. They conspired to attack Jerusalem and disrupt the work. Nehemiah stationed guards and had the people work in groups with weapons. He encouraged them not to be afraid and to fight for their families and homes. When their enemies heard they were aware of the plans against them, the Israelites returned to work on the wall. Nehemiah prepared further defenses and had guards stationed at night so the rebuilding could continue.
