Only those who are unconcerned about architecture, and, perhaps, are comfortable with the inertia of the day-to-day chore of patching the holes in these failing dikes, are content to work on such systems. Somewhat to our astonishment, since our original statement, no one has ever undertaken to dispute this premise. Still, this approach endures and thrives. Why is this architecture so popular? Is it as bad as it seems, or might it serve as a way-station on the road to more enduring, elegant artifacts? What forces drive good programmers to build ugly systems? Can we avoid this? Should we? How can we make such systems better?

This presentation challenges the "norm" for TDD. Testing should be an integral part of your daily programming practice. But you don’t always need to derive your code via many test-code-revise-retest cycles to be test-driven. Some find it more natural to outline a related set of tests first, and use those test scenarios to guide them as they write code. Once they’ve completed a “good enough” implementation that supports the test scenarios, they then write those tests and incrementally fix any bugs as they go. As long as you don’t write hundreds of lines of code without any testing, there isn’t a single best way to be Test Driven. There’s a lot to becoming proficient at TDD. Developing automated test suites, refactoring and reworking tests to eliminate duplication, and testing for exceptional conditions, are just a few. Additionally, acceptance tests, smoke tests, integration, performance and load tests support incremental development as well. If all this testing sounds like too much work, well…let’s be practical. Testing shouldn’t be done just for testing’s sake. Instead, the tests you write should give you leverage to confidently change and evolve your code base and validate the requirements of the system. That’s why it is important to know what to test, what not to test, and when to stop testing.

I successfully defended my master thesis in May 2012. It was assessed with A, which is the highest grade according to a six-point grading scale of Tallinn University. I believe that not only my paper, but also its presentation was clear and logical, which helped me to receive fair, adequate questions from the judges.
I hope, these slides will help future students to make their own presentations for theses. Sometimes presentation becomes a decisive factor when judges argue about your grade.

Researchers in model-driven development (MDD) should be intimately familiar with how MDD is used in industry. If they are not, there is a danger that new methods and tools are developed without proper consideration for the way that MDD developers actually work and think. A thorough understanding of current MDD industrial practice can inform research problems and ensure that research solutions are actually adopted.
This talk will describe results from a year long study, which applied methods from social science to understand how MDD is actually used in industry. Based on a survey of over 400 MDD practitioners, in-depth interviews with 22 industry professionals from 17 different companies, and a small number of on-site observational studies, the talk will discuss the current state-of-practice in industrial use of MDD, and will offer some insights on current research gaps.

Slides of a workshop given at Herzliya on June/2017, organized by ILTAM and IASA Israel. This workshop was dedicated to the topic of Software Architecture in the context of Agile Development. We answered the question: “How much Design Up Front should be done in an Agile project?” Hayim presented his approach of Adaptable Design Up Front (ADUF), describing its rationale, applications in practice and comparison to other approaches such as Emergent Design. He explained why adaptability is essential for the development of complex software systems using Agile methods. The concepts were illustrated through practical software architecture approaches such as micro-services and examples of real software systems that were developed in the past. The workshop also included an exercise on the definition and evolution of the design of an interesting system.
