Contemporary dance
- 2. Contemporary dance is a genre of dance performance that developed during the mid twentieth century and has since grown to become one of the dominant genres for formally trained dancers throughout the world, with particularly strong popularity in the U.S. and Europe.
- 3. Merce Cunningham is considered to be the first choreographer to "develop an independent attitude towards modern dance" and defy the ideas that were established by it.
- 4. As in abstract painting, it is assumed that an element (a movement, a sound, a change of light) is in and of itself expressive; what it communicates is in large part determined by the observer themselves.
- 5. Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. The term "contemporary" is somewhat misleading: it describes a genre that developed during the mid-20th century and is still very popular today.
- 6. Lyrical dance is very similar to ballet dancing in that it involves a lot of the technical aspects of ballet but it also add more freedom of expression through fluid movements.
- 7. Jazz dancing is a fun and energetic dance style. Combining fancy footwork, quick turns and big leap. Jazz dancers quickly gain attention because not only of their fluid movements, but also the grace and balance in which these movements are performed.
