Consumerism and Brave
New World
Begoña Pereda , Lorena Velasco and Sebastian Bernal
Definition
The theory that a progressively greater consumption
of goods is economically beneficial.
Why?
We think consumerism
exists because its a
way to pursue people
to buy and buy things
so all the brands ,
restaurants , etc ; are
economically stable.
Pros and Cons
Pros :
It is convenient people can get what they need without any hassle
It boosts non-service based economies greatly.
It creates jobs
Promotes Innovation
Cons:
People get obsessed with the concept and dependent of it
It is very harmful to the environment and uses up the natural resources on our planet.
In a Brave New World
About kids playing only with balls and sticks years ago “Imagine the folly of allowing people to play
elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.” (23) –They’re implying that
it’d be a waste not to spend money when you can buy things to improve your experience.
!
The Neo-Pavlovian conditioning voice about future demand of industrial supply: “... I do love having
new clothes. But old clothes are beastly. We always throw away old clothes. Ending is better than
mending. The more stitches, the less riches.” (35) –The voice is saying it’s blasphemous having stuff
that has repairs and instead of that they should buy new stuff to replace the flawed thing.
!
About culture: “You can’t consume much if you sit still and read books.” (35) –It says culture
interferes with consuming stuff, so, therefore, it’s an obstacle. We can observe how important buying
stuff is on this dystopian world.
Conclusion
Our conclusion is that consumerism is consuming us
by making us buy things that we don’t need. It makes
us less independent and more lazy. The message that
the author gives us is that it would be a waste to not
spend your money when you can buy more stuff
instead. And he also implies it’s better to replace your
old stuff with new instead of keeping the things you
already have. In general the team disagrees with
