The document outlines the key provisions of the Consumer Protection Act 1986 in India. It defines a consumer as someone who purchases goods or services for consideration. It establishes three-tier consumer dispute redressal mechanisms - district forums for claims up to 20 lakhs, state commissions for 20 lakhs to 1 crore, and a national commission for over 1 crore. The rights of consumers include protection from unsafe goods/services, information about products, access to competitive markets, and consideration in appropriate forums.
Consumer protection laws are designed to ensure fair competition and the free flow of truthful information in the marketplace.
The laws are designed to prevent businesses that engage in fraud or specified unfair practices from gaining an advantage over competitors and may provide additional protection for all types of consumers.
