DSpace for Cultural Heritage: adding support for images visualization,audio/v...4Science
Digital Repositories are continuously evolving into platforms aimed at managing, visualizing, curating and preserving a variety of different cultural digital objects together with their relationships
To support interoperability and to allow a broad dissemination and re-use of cultural heritage and research results, we have built two DSpace add-ons to be released as open source, the IIIF (International Image Interoperability Framework) Image Viewer and the audio/video streaming module. The first one manages the complexity of digital objects such as page sequences, chapters and sections, exposing the metadata and the structure with the IIIF presentation API and use the IIIF API to provide fast visualization and low bandwidth use. The streaming module allows to stream audio / video content loaded in the repository using adaptive streaming and the DASH industry standard. Both modules provide a full open source stack or enable the integration with external Images and Media Server.
Managing the relations between digital objects both in a hierarchical or relational way is a key feature, in order to manage every kind of cultural heritage material. Thus we are enhancing the DSpace Data Model in order to provide not only structural metadata management but also the description of relationships within cultural contexts.

APIs Are Forever - How to Design Long-Lasting APIsLaunchAny
Teams often struggle with balancing the complexity of legacy applications, limited time, and limited resources when designing APIs. The result is often the release of less-than-ideal API design that meets the immediate needs of the client but misses opportunities for longer-term value. This talk explores systems design and domain-driven design (DDD) for API design thinking and how to apply this technique to your design process to create a clear, well-designed, long-lasting API. Resilient service to-service calls in a post-Hystrix worldRares Musina
At N26, we want to make sure we have resilience and fault tolerance built into our backend service-to-service calls. Our services used a combination of Hystrix, Retrofit, Retryer, and other tools to achieve this goal. However, Netflix recently announced that Hystrix is no longer under active development. Therefore, we needed to come up with a replacement solution that maintains the same level of functionality. Since Hystrix provided a big portion of our http client resilience (including circuit breaking, connection thread pool thresholds, easy to add fallbacks, response caching, etc.), we used this announcement as a good opportunity to revisit our entire http client resilience stack. We wanted to find a solution that consolidated our fragmented tooling into an easy-to-use and consistent approach.
This talk will share the approach we are currently implementing and the tools we analyzed while making the decision. Its aim is to provide backend devs (primarily working on JVM languages) and SREs with a comprehensive view on the state of the art for service-to-service call tooling (resilience 4j, envoy, gRPC, retrofit, etc), mechanisms to improve service-to-service call resiliency (timeouts, circuit breaking, adaptive concurrency limits, outlier detection, rate limiting, etc.) and a discussion on where these mechanisms should be implemented (client side, side-car proxy, server-side side-car proxy or server-side).
DSpace is an open source digital repository software package typically used to create open access repositories for scholarly content. It can store any digital media type and is optimized for text-based files. DSpace uses a Java platform with a PostgreSQL or Oracle database and has features like full-text search, persistent identifiers, and the ability to handle any file type. The community development model is open source under a BSD license.

Libraries face new challenges in the digital age, including decreasing budgets, changing user expectations, and new competitors. To remain relevant, libraries must embrace technologies like e-books, mobile apps, makerspaces, and 3D printing. They must redefine their roles and spaces, prove their value through metrics, and position their librarians as agents of change. By responding quickly to trends, reinventing themselves creatively, and meeting communities' evolving needs, libraries can future-proof their important roles.
Digital libraries face several major issues and challenges including technical architecture, building digital collections, digitization, metadata, copyright and rights management, and preservation. Specifically, technical architecture requires high-speed networks and servers to support different digital formats. Building collections involves deciding what existing materials to digitize and acquire. Digitization is the process of converting analog materials into electronic form. Metadata is needed to describe and provide access to digital resources but requires persistent naming schemes. Copyright and rights management are challenging due to the ease of copying digital materials. Finally, long-term preservation of both storage media and access to content is critical given the rapid obsolescence of digital formats.
The document discusses the importance and process of developing an effective mission statement for libraries. It begins by defining what a mission statement is and its purpose. It then provides examples of mission statements from different types of libraries like academic, public, school and special libraries. The document outlines the key elements that make for an effective mission statement and the considerations and steps in the drafting process, including brainstorming, writing in an active voice and revisiting the statement periodically. Developing a clear and concise mission statement that guides the library's goals and services is an important part of strategic planning.
This document discusses digital libraries and their characteristics. It notes that digital libraries provide access to an enormous number of digitized texts and tools. They allow access to information 24/7 through a school's intranet system. However, issues like copyright, standards, and ensuring equitable access must be addressed. The document also compares digital libraries to traditional libraries and outlines some potential advantages and disadvantages of digital libraries for education.
Spend some time working with OpenAPI and gRPC and you’ll notice that these two technologies have a lot in common. Both are open source efforts, both describe APIs, and both promise better experiences for API producers and consumers. So why do we need both? If we do, what value does each provide? What can each project learn from the other? We’ll bring the two together for a side-by-side comparison and pose answers to these and other questions about two API methodologies that will do much to influence the future of networked APIs.
