There are 88 named constellations. This
includes 48 ancient constellations listed by the
Greek astronomer Ptolemy, and the new
constellations.
Constellations take many forms including
mythical creatures, animals, people and
objects.

The largest constellation by area is Hydra which is 3.16%
of the sky. While Crux is the smallest taking only 0.17% of
the sky.
The Big and Little Dipper are considered asterism. This is
when a small pattern of stars are found within a
constellation.
Farmers were the first to use constellations. In some
areas the changing of season was so subtle that the
farmers dependesd on the stars to know the right time to
harvest.

In the Greek constellations, there are 21 constellations
located in the Northern Hemisphere and 15 in the south.

attributed to the star patterns in the night sky, this gives
birth to constellations.
Archaeological studies have identified possible
astronomical markings painted on the walls in the cave
system at Lascaux in Southern France. Our ancestors
may have recorded their view of the night sky on the
walls in their cave 17300 years ago.
Over half of the constellations the IAU recognizes today
are attributed to ancient Greek, which consolidated the
works by the ancient Babylonian, Egyptian, and Assyrian.
88 of the constellations were recorded in the seventh and
eight books of Claudius Ptolemy's Almagest, although the
exact origin of these constellations remain uncertian.

Between the 16th and 17th century AD, European
astronomers and celestial cartographers added new
constellations. These constellations were mainly “new
discoveries” made by the Europeans first explored the
southern hemisphere. Those who made particular
contribution to the “new” constellations include the
Polish-born, German astronomer Johannes Hevelius;
three Dutch cartographers, Frederick de Houtman, Pieter
Dirksz Keyser and Gerard Mercator; the French
astronomer Nicolas Louise de Lacaille; the Flemish
mapmaker Petrus Plancius and the italian navigator
Amerigo Vespucci.
