What were the lives of slaves like (including men, women and children) in the south? Consider the different types of labor systems (gang labor, task labor), and the ways in which slaves created communities and cultures that allowed them to survive in an oppressive society.

In some stories, characters come into conflict with the culture in which they live. Often, a character feels alienated in his/her community or society due to race, gender, class or ethnic background. How is the character alienated from community and how does she/he respond to it? What does that character's alienation say about the surrounding society's assumptions, morality and values? In what way(s) do literary elements reflect how that society defines race, gender, class and/or ethnicity? How does this create conflict for the character?
THESIS:
There are conflicts within literary works all the time and I find it to be a very strong way to convey a story, using conflict. I have chosen two different literary stories to compare and contrast the conflict within each of them. The first is“What It's Like to Be a Black Girl” (For Those of You Who Aren't) by Patricia Smith (1991) and “Child of the Americas” by Aurora Levins Morales (1986). While both are stories about self reflection after self conflict, how each of the main characters identify and solve these conflicts are very different. I will show the differences and similarities of each.

There are many agents of popular culture though which the messages, themes and symbols of popular culture are produced and consumed. Media is a key agent of popular culture, and within it music is one mode for the production and consumption of popular culture. The music of the 1960s marked a key period of transition in the United States as themes of social problems and dissidence started to fill the radio waves. This assignment will allow you to explore one social issue or problem in music today.
Option 1 Instructions:
1) Choose one social issue or social problem (i.e. drugs, the environment, war, teenage pregnancy, hate crimes, etc.).
2) Find at least 5 songs with lyrics that address your chosen social issue/problem. You will need to cite these songs using proper APA formatting (see below).
3) Analyze the songs for similarities and differences in how they address the social issue/problem. You may:
- look for themes within and among the songs (i.e. songs about war that talk about ‘ending war’
- consider the year the songs were copyrighted
- consider the genre the song fits in
- is the song directed at a particular audience? (think socio-demographic characteristics: age, race/ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status (SES), and sexuality)
- what type of vocabulary, words, grammar, euphemisms, vernacular is used for the lyrics?
- Consider the actual production of the song as well: tempo, emotion, male/female singer, individual singer/band, etc.

You will be reading and comparing extracts from three biographies of John Brown, the militant abolitionist who led a raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1859, a failed attempt at starting a slave rebellion. He was tried for treason, convicted and executed. A complicated and controversial historical actor, his life and actions have been interpreted in fundamentally different ways: Brown has been seen as a hero, a villain, a madman, a terrorist, a religious zealot; the hero who prompted the North to take on the South in Civil War, or the monster who inflamed the nation’s passions, precipitating a needless war.
It is not your job to identify the
real
John Brown, but to explore, in an essay of between 3 and 5 double-spaced pages, how interpretations of the past change over time and space, using biographies of John Brown.
Assignment Outline:
I. Introduction, with your thesis statement.
In one or two paragraphs, introduce Brown and the problem of interpreting him. End with a statement about what you conclude from your readings.
II. Comparison of three assigned readings
Introduce each of the three passages and its author in turn; summarize their "take" on Brown; provide examples of how they paint Brown’s intentions, motives, actions and their consequences.

What can we use that is common in nearly every work that will help us reinforce one common theme? (Ex. Freedom and Confinement)
Analyzing theme always involves generalizations and abstractions. There are universal themes that can be found in countless works of literature, such as love and hate, good and evil, innocence and experience, communication and isolation, life and death, society and the individual. A story or poem may be about a specific love affair, for example; it is easy to say the general subject is love, but interpreting the theme involves explaining what the work says about love. You can find commonality of theme in the works you are analyzing by using the following:
· Plot - What are the actions or events of the narrative and how are they presented? How do they relate to your theme? What are the most important traits of the main characters? Imagine 3 pairs of glasses, and each pair of glasses represents a different “lens” through which the wearer of the glasses can view the world. Same world...different view based on the color of the lens.
Critical methodologies (also known as critical approaches) function in the same way. In a nutshell, critical methodologies are different LENSES through which a reader can examine a particular text (short story, poem, play, novel, etc.). Alison Booth and Kelly J. Mays, the editors of our textbook, classify critical approaches into four major categories:
Critical approaches that emphasize the text,
Critical approaches that emphasize the source,
Critical approaches that emphasize the receiver, and
Critical approaches that highlight historical and ideological criticism.
Each major category houses a number of critical approaches.
Emphasis on the Text - This approach limits the consideration of outside elements- author background, social factors, etc.

What do you think was God’s rationale in doing so? Why do you think God chose water as the instrument of punishment? Suppose you were in God’s place, what form of punishment would you have chosen? Why? Do you think the animals also deserved to be punished? Why or why not? Finally, think about various punishments given in our society today. Do you think punishments serve any useful purpose? Or are they just a form of control and power by those in authority? Give specific examples to support your answer.

Another aspect of the story of Noah and the Flood focuses on Noah and his family’s salvation in the midst of God’s punishment. What does this reveal about the character of God? Is God’s sparing of Noah and his family consistent with his desire to destroy the world? Analyze the words/expressions used to describe Noah’s character. What do you think they mean in relation to the kind of person he was? What explanation could there be for the difference in his character from the other people? What can we use that is common in nearly every work that will help us reinforce one common theme? (Ex. Freedom and Confinement)
Analyzing theme always involves generalizations and abstractions. There are universal themes that can be found in countless works of literature, such as love and hate, good and evil, innocence and experience, communication and isolation, life and death, society and the individual. A story or poem may be about a specific love affair, for example; it is easy to say the general subject is love, but interpreting the theme involves explaining what the work says about love. You can find commonality of theme in the works you are analyzing by using the following:
· Plot - What are the actions or events of the narrative and how are they presented? How do they relate to your theme? What are the most important traits of the main characters? How does their behavior reinforce the theme you are analyzing? Does the author support their views or is he a distant observer forcing you to judge them?

Overview of Critical Methodologies
Imagine 3 pairs of glasses, and each pair of glasses represents a different “lens” through which the wearer of the glasses can view the world. Same world...different view based on the color of the lens.
Critical methodologies (also known as critical approaches) function in the same way. In a nutshell, critical methodologies are different LENSES through which a reader can examine a particular text (short story, poem, play, novel, etc.). Alison Booth and Kelly J. Mays, the editors of our textbook, classify critical approaches into four major categories:
Critical approaches that emphasize the text,
Critical approaches that emphasize the source,
Critical approaches that emphasize the receiver, and
Critical approaches that highlight historical and ideological criticism.
Each major category houses a number of critical approaches.
Emphasis on the Text - This approach limits the consideration of outside elements- author background, social factors, etc.
New Criticism - does not take into consideration source (author) or reader (you)
