Software-defined storage (SDS) provides storage independent of underlying hardware through abstraction, automation, and policy-driven provisioning. It can help reduce costs by using commodity hardware and reusing existing resources. While SDS offers benefits like flexibility, efficiency, and delivering storage as a service, there are also challenges to consider like lack of vendor testing for all hardware combinations and difficulty gauging performance. Whether SDS makes sense depends on individual use cases, such as for remote/small offices, scale-out storage, or hyper-convergence. Overall, SDS is a real concept that is already in use today across the industry.

Brian Lalancette CollabCon 2015 Developing a Business Requirements Strategy f...Brian Lalancette
We regularly see SharePoint introduced by IT then thrust upon unsuspecting users as (for example) a replacement for file shares or a cure-all collaboration tool. But several important questions get missed: What are the business problems we’re trying to solve by rolling out SharePoint? What are the short- and long-term objectives around introducing or upgrading SharePoint in a particular organization? How exactly do we go about spec’ing and sizing SharePoint farms? What factors will ultimately drive not only the initial go-live state of your SharePoint farm, but also map out its growth strategy? Finally, what’s the best way to proceed if we don’t have (or can’t easily get) the answers to all these questions yet?
This document discusses how workshifting and cloud hosted desktops can help businesses maintain productivity and continuity in difficult situations. It highlights how cloud services provide flexibility, choice, and cost control by making IT an operating expense rather than a capital cost. Similarly, CMS replacement projects involve significant uncovered scope, attract many stakeholders, have requirements that are constantly discovered and debated, and generally require replacement every 3-6 years. The document provides advice on gathering a complete content inventory, examining database schemas, and consulting stakeholders to understand all requirements, noting that replacement projects typically involve more content, data sources, and functionality than initially expected. It warns of pressures to

Mint.com started as a prototype created by the author using open source tools with no prior startup experience. The initial prototype focused on differentiating features like aggregating financial accounts and transactions. As users grew, performance issues arose due to increased load on servers and databases. To address these growing pains, the architecture was optimized by separating tiers, adding caching, database sharding, and more. Key lessons were to focus first on critical user problems in prototypes, continuously measure performance, and optimize based on demand to balance latency, throughput, and quality as the user base expanded.

Forms 2 Future - the ongoing journey into the future for Oracle based organiz...Lucas Jellema
Many organizations around the world have adopted Oracle technology for developing custom applications. Over the past two decades, they may have used PL/SQL, Reports, Forms, Designer, Portal or the Web PL/SQL Toolkit. Many of these organizations have come to face new challenges: more agility or functionality, new user groups or channels or more efficient maintenance. Or they fear getting stuck in the past, running out of support or qualified and motivated resources. What is the right way to approach the future? What mix of tools, how and when to adopt which new technology, how to build a business case? This session recounts various more and less successful warstories of organizations that embarked on a journey into the future.
We will discuss SOA, ADF, OSB, WebCenter, SaaS, Forms, WebLogic, .NET, Java and much more.

Lean Enterprise, Microservices and Big DataStylight
This document discusses enabling the lean enterprise through technologies like microservices, continuous integration/deployment, and cloud computing. It begins by defining the lean enterprise and the OODA loop concept. It then explains how technologies like AWS, big data, and microservices can help organizations continuously observe, orient, decide, and act. Specific AWS services like EC2, EMR, Kinesis, Redshift, S3, and DynamoDB are reviewed. The benefits of breaking up monolithic systems into microservices and implementing devops practices like CI/CD are also summarized.
The document discusses whether on-cloud business intelligence makes sense. It outlines the evolution of cloud computing and advantages of on-cloud solutions such as low cost and easy scalability. While on-cloud addresses many challenges of traditional BI like high costs and technical skills requirements, complex data preparation, models and analytics remain difficult for on-cloud to fully solve. Strategies like simplifying tasks, automation, and using columnar databases can help reduce complexity. On-cloud BI is suitable when in-house options lack skills or resources, or projects are short-term. Careful vendor selection is important for on-cloud BI success.
The document describes a business intelligence software called Qiagram that allows non-technical domain experts to easily explore and query complex datasets through a visual drag-and-drop interface without SQL or programming knowledge. Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
