Configuration management (CM) is about systematically handling changes to ensure a system maintains integrity over time. CM implements policies, procedures, tools, and techniques to manage proposed changes, track changes, and maintain an inventory of system documents as the system changes. CM involves taking "snapshots" of documents at different points in development to capture moments using version control, and handling issues by relating them to new document versions. CM needs to be tailored to an organization, its type of business, products, and projects.
