HIPAA’s original purpose was to make it easier for people to move from one insurance plan to another as the changed jobs or became unemployed. Privacy and confidentiality is important to patients to have the right to control who will see their protected health information.  This means that communications with or about patients involving patient health information need to be kept private and limited to those people who need the information for treatment, payment and health care operations purposes. You and Patient’s Rights
Confidential information includes patient identity, address, age, Social Security number, and any other personal information that they are asked to provide.  It also includes the reason a person is sick or in the hospital, the treatments and medication he or she receives and any other information about his or her condition or past health conditions.  Patient information is used for the care of the patients. Keep It Private
Authorization to see patient information is limited to only people who need access to confidential information, will see patient information, in order to do their job.  Those not authorized will not be given access and should not attempt to gain access, wither in the computer or on paper.  Whatever information you see, hear or read in the course of performing your job as a volunteer or nurses aid,  cannot be shared with anyone, including co-workers, other patients, visitors or anyone else who may ask you about it.  Limited Access
If patients talk to you about their condition, you must remember that they expect you to keep it confidential.  It’s important to realize that protecting confidential information is a responsibility that the entire workforce shares, including volunteers, regardless of whether they are directly involved in the care of patients. Keep it Confidential
It not ok to intrude on or look around for information or records of a famous person or patient in the hospital.  It is grounds for dismissal and possible legal consequences. It is not ok to tell you family or other neighbors that a friend has been admitted in the hospital. Any information you learn while working in a hospital environment needs to be kept private. Do Not Intrude
Employees who use computerized patient records must not leave their computer logged in to the network when they are not at their workstation.  This includes the information desk computers.  Do not leave patient names on the screen. Always clear the screen after looking up a patient. Be Responsibility
Sanctions for violating privacy rules of those in the workforce who break the privacy policies, up to and including dismissal.  In addition, there are fines of $100 per violation per person up to a maximum penalty or $250,00 for each identical breach.  Federal Crimes Penalties for wrongful disclosure include not only large fines, but also up to ten years in jail.  These penalties can be levied against the individual as well as the organization.  Reporting violation are encouraged or suspected violation to the hotline number at 999-999-9999 Sanctions

  • 2. HIPAA’s original purpose was to make it easier for people to move from one insurance plan to another as the changed jobs or became unemployed. Privacy and confidentiality is important to patients to have the right to control who will see their protected health information. This means that communications with or about patients involving patient health information need to be kept private and limited to those people who need the information for treatment, payment and health care operations purposes. You and Patient’s Rights
  • 3. Confidential information includes patient identity, address, age, Social Security number, and any other personal information that they are asked to provide. It also includes the reason a person is sick or in the hospital, the treatments and medication he or she receives and any other information about his or her condition or past health conditions. Patient information is used for the care of the patients. Keep It Private
  • 4. Authorization to see patient information is limited to only people who need access to confidential information, will see patient information, in order to do their job. Those not authorized will not be given access and should not attempt to gain access, wither in the computer or on paper. Whatever information you see, hear or read in the course of performing your job as a volunteer or nurses aid, cannot be shared with anyone, including co-workers, other patients, visitors or anyone else who may ask you about it.   • 5. If patients talk to you about their condition, you must remember that they expect you to keep it confidential. It’s important to realize that protecting confidential information is a responsibility that the entire workforce shares, including volunteers, regardless of whether they are directly involved in the care of patients.   • 6. It not ok to intrude on or look around for information or records of a famous person or patient in the hospital. It is grounds for dismissal and possible legal consequences. It is not ok to tell you family or other neighbors that a friend has been admitted in the hospital. Any information you learn while working in a hospital environment needs to be kept private. Do Not Intrude
  • 7. Employees who use computerized patient records must not leave their computer logged in to the network when they are not at their workstation. This includes the information desk computers. Do not leave patient names on the screen. Always clear the screen after looking up a patient. Be Responsibility
  • 8. Sanctions for violating privacy rules of those in the workforce who break the privacy policies, up to and including dismissal. In addition, there are fines of $100 per violation per person up to a maximum penalty or $250,00 for each identical breach. Federal Crimes Penalties for wrongful disclosure include not only large fines, but also up to ten years in jail. These penalties can be levied against the individual as well as the organization. Reporting violation are encouraged or suspected violation to the hotline number at 999-999-9999 Sanctions
