This study developed a 1-5 scale body condition scoring system to measure dairy cows' body condition independent of body weight and frame size. The scoring system was based on appearance and palpation of the back and hindquarters. Cows in different production stages and with different production characteristics had significantly different body condition scores. Specifically:
- Cows that were most efficient milk producers maintained a body condition score around 2.5 and did not significantly gain body condition during lactation. These cows also had fewer days open but lower persistency of lactation.
- Less efficient producers maintained a higher average body condition score of around 3.3. These cows gained more body condition during lactation.
- Cows with
