This document defines composites and their key components. Composites are engineered materials made of two or more constituent materials that remain separate but form a single component. The matrix is a continuous phase that holds the reinforcing phase, which provides strength. Composites can be tailored by varying constituent phases. They must have distinguishable phases that are insoluble and chemically inert to each other to provide improved properties over their individual components. Composites are found widely in nature and everyday objects like wood, bone, concrete and reinforced plastics.
