The Compassionate Kozhikode initiative was launched in 2015 to make Kozhikode District in Kerala, India a better place to live and visit through community participation and compassion. It aims to unite people and create social development by bringing people together for projects like Operation Sulaimani which provides free meals to those in need, welfare programs, and beautification projects. The initiative uses social media and other communication strategies to engage and inform the community. It has been recognized with awards for using social media for social good and as one of the best administered districts in India.
2. What is so (sep)cial about CK
The Compassionate Kozhikode
initiative is designed to make
Kozhikode a better place, to
live and to visit. The thoughts
that spring to your mind when
you think of Kozhikode will be
hospitality, warmth and most
importantly, compassion.
It is an extension of brotherly
love. This is an inherent quality
of all human beings.
Compassionate Kozhikode is
a platform which aims to bring
together people with the sole
aim of making a better
Kozhikode.
The project was launched on October 3rd 2015 by the District Collector and the District Magistrate.
CK believes in 'Create Better Places for People to Live & Visit.'
2
3. CK mission will unite people share the
feeling of 'Mohabbat' and thereby create a
haven on earth. CK was started by then
Kozhikode collector Prasanth Nair and
now led by present collector U V Jose. The core
idea of CK is social development through community
participation, this can be considered as the most
successful gov. led community participation program.

4. Collector bro
Prasanth Nair IAS, a 32 year old
civil servant who is popularly known
as ‘collector bro’ started the project
CK. He believes “Compassion is the
cornerstone of successful
administration. Most issues have a
solution in compassion. I’ve found
that most of the issues I’ve faced in
office have come about due to a lack
of compassion.

“The people are out there in social media, so we need to be there. It’s as simple as
that. Pasting notices on the notice boards of the village office is no longer the way to
reach out to the public. Social media as a platform makes administration more
transparent, seamless, fast, publicly accountable, and ‘informal’,” says Prashanth,

Kozhikode is denied food on account
of an empty wallet without answering
any questions.
✗ This initiative is run in partnership with
and Hotel and Restaurants association
and public support.
10
11. ✗ 'Any one' can collect a Sulaimani Coupon from one
of the authorised distribution centers.
✗ Exchange this for a meal in one of the many 100
partner restaurants and have a hearty meal with
dignity.
✗ A donation box is kept at these restaurants for the public to
contribute.
✗ Money from this collection is consistently collected by CK
volunteers and deposited in a bank account managed by the
Hotels & Restaurants Association.

15. Savarigirigiri
It is a normal scene across Kerala where you can
see students standing in buses, mostly ignored
and harassed by private buses.
Savarigirigiri was launched to bring dignity
to student passengers with the help of smart
card, the bus owners association will have an
understanding about the number of students who have
travelled with them and the potential loss is absorbed by the
association which is further divided amongst individual buses
operators. Bus Operators also now have the option to keep donation
boxes through which they can raise funds from the public hence
making up for the 'absorbed losses' as well.
15
16. Sampoorna is the project to inform
people about the all types of
government programs, schemes,
initiatives etc.

CK currently training volunteers to
document destination stories on wikipedia,
blogs, youtube video, open street maps etc
so that mapping becomes a culture of 'CK'.
If you are interested in joining us as a
volunteer please write to us with a subject
"Kozhipedia". Our dream is to make a
people's map of Kozhikode, where the
content belongs to our people and not some
corporates.

19. Educational Scholarships
There are many students in our districts who can't afford
studies due to financial restrictions. District
Administration is playing the role of a facilitator to match
the needs of such students with the support of those
who would like to fund their studies. Here, the donor is
only contributing in a way that each other’s privacy and dignity
is respected and maintained. Donor is contributing to a system
and not to an individual or group of individuals.
Applications are being accepted from deserving students and
families, and linked to compassionate hearts
19
20. Freedom Cafe
Where sharing is an art.
This is a cafe run by Student Volunteers. You
place your order like in any restaurant and enjoy
your meal. However before you leave, we don't intent to give you a
bill, except a thank you note. Some one else has already paid your
bill. You are welcome to pay for the next person(s) so that the loop
continues. Here, paying is an art and never maths. There's no
compulsion to pay at all.
20
21. Legends of Kozhikode
There are many people around us who do
things unique, compassionate, innovative and
different without ever getting noted, Legends of
Kozhikode is an attempt to bring out unknown
positive energy in everyone and making them
ambassadors of district to make a better
kozhikode.

23. Tere Mere Beach Mein
Even though Kozhikode beach is one of the most popular places
In the city, the beach is not up kept and is quite dirty. The huge
crowd coming to the beach and lack of proper waste collection
and disposal mechanism makes Kozhikode beach one of the
dirtiest beaches in Kerala.
✗ CK identified six business groups as partners who would take up the
responsibility to maintain the Kozhikode beach. The partner incurs the cost of
maintenance of the beach..
✗ The uniqueness of the project is that this project has been taken up by the
partners as a good will gesture without any claim to advertise or commercial
benefits
