Compass Learning Odyssey Overview and Application in the Middle School
What is Compass Learning Odyssey? Tool that directly connects data and technology Web-based and interactive Versatile- remediation, enrichment, and grade level instruction Differentiates learning based on student’s individual needs Allows teachers to easily make informed instructional decisions for each student as an individual Works collaboratively with MAP testing
After a student takes MAP… Imports student’s current data for math, reading, and language Uses the individual subgroup RIT range to assign folders of activities for each subgroup For example…When a student takes the MAP test, they could receive these RIT ranges for the following math subgroups: 		Algebra 218-231 		Geometry 226-239 		Numbers 222-228 Based on these scores, Compass Learning Odyssey then assigns a folder of individualized activities at their “ready to learn” level for each subgroup
Possible Uses Relative to Student Needs Remediation Bring students up to grade level Enrichment classes with students individually working on a targeted area of growth Worksheets directly tied to activities that can be used in small-group instruction Enrichment To push students beyond grade level Folders assigned for students to individually work on outside of school Direct Instruction To support grade level Interactive tools for use in the classroom Whole group activities with interactive white boards (Promethean/Mimio)
The Student Perspective Interactive and Individualized
Student logs in
Enters their subject portal (math, reading, language)
Opens folder connected to their targeted area of growth
Student selects their activity
Student completes activity
Upon completion, “backpacks” to check for skill proficiency prior to moving on, creating a sense of ownership in their personal progress
After completing all activities in that growth area folder, they can move on to the next targeted folder
The Teacher Perspective Monitoring and Management
Assess the folders assigned by MAP and interpret which folders need to be added in order to build skill
Teachers can quickly and easily assign additional folders at their discretion
Ability to digitally communicate within the system via Compass “email”
Ability to monitor by running reports to verify activity completion at proficiency level prior to student moving on
Utilization Report Overview of activities completed, time spent, average score, per class November 1st, 2010 to January 23, 2011 January 24, 2011 to February 7th, 2011
Student Progress Detailed outline of individual student’s progress by activity, date, time, score, and duration
Goal-Based Test Results Takes student’s individual scores for MAP subgroups and sorts for easy ability grouping
Increasing Student Achievement Student-centered program Directly aligned to district’s assessment already in place Additional hours of interactive learning directly at the student’s individual “ready to learn” level Ability to quickly and easily differentiate in order to meet students’ needs in a realistic and manageable way

Compass Learning Odyssey- School Board Presentation

  • 1. Compass Learning Odyssey Overview and Application in the Middle School
  • 2. What is Compass Learning Odyssey? Tool that directly connects data and technology Web-based and interactive Versatile- remediation, enrichment, and grade level instruction Differentiates learning based on student’s individual needs Allows teachers to easily make informed instructional decisions for each student as an individual Works collaboratively with MAP testing
  • 3. After a student takes MAP… Imports student’s current data for math, reading, and language Uses the individual subgroup RIT range to assign folders of activities for each subgroup For example…When a student takes the MAP test, they could receive these RIT ranges for the following math subgroups: Algebra 218-231 Geometry 226-239 Numbers 222-228 Based on these scores, Compass Learning Odyssey then assigns a folder of individualized activities at their “ready to learn” level for each subgroup

Possible Uses Relative to Student Needs Remediation Bring students up to grade level Enrichment classes with students individually working on a targeted area of growth Worksheets directly tied to activities that can be used in small-group instruction Enrichment To push students beyond grade level Folders assigned for students to individually work on outside of school Direct Instruction To support grade level Interactive tools for use in the classroom Whole group activities with interactive white boards (Promethean/Mimio)

  • 7. Enters their subject portal (math, reading, language)
  • 8. Opens folder connected to their targeted area of growth
  • 11. Upon completion, “backpacks” to check for skill proficiency prior to moving on, creating a sense of ownership in their personal progress
  • 12. After completing all activities in that growth area folder, they can move on to the next targeted folder
  • 13. The Teacher Perspective Monitoring and Management
  • 14. Assess the folders assigned by MAP and interpret which folders need to be added in order to build skill
  • 15. Teachers can quickly and easily assign additional folders at their discretion
  • 16. Ability to digitally communicate within the system via Compass “email”
  • 17. Ability to monitor by running reports to verify activity completion at proficiency level prior to student moving on
  • 18. Utilization Report Overview of activities completed, time spent, average score, per class November 1st, 2010 to January 23, 2011 January 24, 2011 to February 7th, 2011
  • 19. Student Progress Detailed outline of individual student’s progress by activity, date, time, score, and duration
  • 20. Goal-Based Test Results Takes student’s individual scores for MAP subgroups and sorts for easy ability grouping
