10. Chapter 2A: LITERATURE REVIEW
Simchi-Levi and Kaminsky (2000) define supply chain management as “the integration of key
business processes among a network of interdependent suppliers, manufacturers, distribution
centers, and retailers in order to improve the flow of goods, services, and information from
original suppliers to final customers, with the objectives of reducing system-wide costs while
maintaining required service levels”.
The Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) (2004) defines SCM as:
“SCM encompasses the planning and management of all activities involved in sourcing and
procurement, conversion, and all logistics management activities, including coordination and
collaboration with suppliers, intermediaries, third-party service providers, and customers”.
Cooper, Lambert, and Pagh (1997) define SCM as the management and integration of the entire
set of business processes that provides products, services and information that add value for
customers.
11. Chapter 2B: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research Design:
● Descriptive Method - Descriptive research design is a type of research method that is
used when one wants to get information on the current status of an object. It is used to
describe what is in existence in respect to conditions or variables that are found in a
given situation.
Data Collection Method:
● Secondary Data Collection - The research of both companies would be purely based on
secondary data. Secondary data on company information would be collected from the
internet. It is done by searching related articles and journals and finding out relative
information on the topic.
Limitations:
● As this is a country report specifically to be submitted in the USA therefore it is time
bound which is 3 months and this is very little time for successfully coming to a
perfect conclusion.
● Most of the data found and analysed is secondary data which can be or cannot be
100% factual.
12. Chapter 3: OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
Objectives:
To study Operational Work Aspects of both companies.
To study the marketing mix strategies of both the companies.
Also a SWOT analysis of the both the companies with the STP analysis.
13. Chapter 4: DISCUSSION (of Research Objectives)
OperationalAspect of Blue Dart (Logistics)
The Information Technology industry is, perhaps, typical of the changing and escalating logistic
demands of various industries today, irrespective of their category as 'old' or 'new' economy. In
the IT industry, the difference between success and failure is closely linked to the supply/value
chain integration, of which there are two distinct processes:
1. The delivery of goods to the customer in the most reliable transit period (and preferably the
shortest) possible. 'Reliable' alludes to a certain guaranteed transit time for packages to reach
customers or the response that organisations need in the event of any exceptions.
2. The reverse flow of acknowledged, signed delivery records without which, in many cases,
recovery of bills are virtually impossible. Especially so in the case of companies placing multi-
location orders that could cover hundreds of cities. The task for the supplier is staggering - plan
logistics for deliveries to all these locations, and hope for 100% of the delivery records to be
returned before bills can be submitted to the customer. In most IT companies, the role of
'logistics' or 'fulfillment' is key.
With organisations moving towards close to perfect standards like Six Sigma, interaction with
logistics suppliers has taken on a critical role moving up sometimes to the level of the CEO of
the organisation.
Blue Dart Express Limited applied and found solutions to these critical demands much before
other players could even recognize their need. Through its exceptional people processes, superior
technology, and stress on quality systems over the last, almost two decades now, Blue Dart was
quick to fulfill these needs:
The country's most reliable air and surface network offers a pre-determined delivery
schedule with close to 100% accuracy. The IT industry could plan its production with
precision and avoid expensive inventory build-up.
14. Blue Dart offers the country's most comprehensive communications technology and
customer software to support critical supply-chain distribution demands.
The country's only express service provider with a dedicated fleet of five freighters (five
Boeing 757s) ensures that packages are flown to their destinations overnight. These
freighters offer capacity and volumes not available with any other carrier in the domestic
air space.
Retrieval of signed delivery records posed the industry's most intriguing problem. Blue
Dart was quick to understand this requirement and put in place a 100% retrieval system.
Blue Dart not only handles large volumes and oversize packages overnight - it also provides the
industry with status of their shipments and retrieves such records as are necessary for billing. The
entire cycle has been considerably shortened, enabling the industry to achieve healthy
bottomlines.

The company provides various services to its esteemed customers and handles nearly 2.4 million
of package requests per day. FedEx provides all round the clock services to its customers that are
spread all over the world in places like Asia, Middle East, Europe, Latin America, Africa and
North America.
The vehicles like the aircrafts that are at its disposal plays an important role in providing timely
and efficient services. In order to deal with the customers directly they have well-trained staff
members who are recruited as desk executives. They provide all the related information about
the parcels.
It also provides internet facilities for any bookings. It has an organized distribution channel. In
the first stage, the parcel or the product is procured from the customer. The next stage is to
supply the proper channel for the distribution of that product and this depends on the rate the
consumer finds affordable. Lastly, the product is delivered to the party efficiently and within the
allotted period.
Probably the only reason for its success if its distribution and delivery system. From the moment
the courier or the package leaves your house or your business place, you can track it to its
delivery to the end point. This is what Fedex promises and delivers. Due to its years and years of
fantastic user experience, the firm has gained a lot of brand equity because of distribution.
Price in the Marketing mix of Fedex
FedEx has adopted a premium pricing policy for the quality services rendered. Although, the
freight rates have shown a remarkable increase, the company has kept its rates mostly
unchanged. This is mainly because of the economies of scale which Fedex enjoys.
In some countries, it has kept a flexible pricing policy such as in China, in order to make inroads
in the new market and it has reduced its prices. Keeping with the flexible pricing policy it has
offered discounts and various schemes at different periods to attract the customers. It has also
provided Pick-up Facilities for the products at a reasonable additional cost thereby making
deliveries even easier. The prices vary according to the type of service provided and they have
various price packages as per the convenience of the customers.
30. Promotion in the Marketing mix of Fedex
FedEx has taken the help of many slogans to advertise its brand name and popularize its services.
Some of its slogans that went on to become a hit are “Our Most Important Package is Yours’,
“Be Absolutely Sure”, “Relax, its FedEx”, “We Understand”, “We Live To Deliver” and “Brown
Bailout”. Its present slogan is “The World On Time”. In the year 1981, John Moschitta Jr, shot
one of the most extraordinary ads of all times for the promotion of FedEx. This ad known as
“Fast Paced World” is one of the most watched ads even today.

last few years for research and development purposes, the company has spent nearly five million
dollars. In below the line marketing, FedEx ensures that all of its trucks are branded by its logo
and nearest location. Outdoor hoardings are used frequently. In ATL, television ads, newspaper
ads and social media ads are most common.

FedEx has some benefits provided to the business organisations with something called as
FedEx Fulfillment Services where you can extend you day even after your business
working hours they are operating 24 hours with its global distribution centers.
Similar to Blue Dart’s Express Limited service, FedEx has Critical Inventory logistics
with more benefits than Blue Dart.
Blue Dart is only known to the Southern Asia part as such it should start concentrating on
its global presence. It should also focus on the promotion aspect as Blue dart has invested
less in in advertising.
The pricing policy of both the companies is different where Blue Dart prices its products
for all customers having varied services for different customer needs and FedEx has
positioned its brand as a premium brand in most of the countries.
