THE LMS ACTIVITIES THAT MATTER MOST
Four types of LMS
engagement are most
predictive across all
institution types:
• Attendance
Unique days visiting the online
course, not logins
• LMS grades
Interim grades in the LMS
• Course material engagement
• Discussion board engagement
This insight is based on 47 programs
including 33 on-ground and 14 online
across 38 institutions.

THE LMS ACTIVITIES THAT MATTER MOST
All the most predictive LMS
features are derived
variables, not raw data or
counts directly from the LMS.
• Relative Variables: Comparing the student
to peers in the same section at the same
time (e.g. unique days visiting the course).
• Consistency Variables: How consistent is
the student across course activities (e.g.
posting assignments).
• Min and Max Variables: Predictive power
of the highest and lowest values for grades
and other activities for each student.
• Average Variables: Average values across
the student’s courses for different activity
types (e.g. discussion posts, grades).

A growing body of research
is exploring the relationship
between high school
performance, SAT/ACT
tests and student success
in higher ed.
In looking at 440,000 student records
from 17 partner institutions, we found no
institutions for whom the norm
referenced SAT or ACT test scores were
significantly more predictive than high
school data.

SAYING
Based on the research, high school
performance (HS GPA or class
percentile) may be a better indicator
of first-year success than SAT and
ACT scores.
• 50% of the institutions studied showed that high
school data were significantly more predictive.
• The other 50% showed high school GPA and ACT/SAT
test scores were equally as predictive.
• Zero institutions had test score data more predictive.
HS performance trumps test scores across institutions.
• Call to action to collect more HS data.

Civitas Learning® Copyright ©2016 COMMUNITY INSIGHT 1 THE LMS ACTIVITIES THAT MATTER MOST Four types of LMS engagement are most predictive across all institution types: • Attendance Unique days visiting the online course, not logins • LMS grades Interim grades in the LMS • Course material engagement • Discussion board engagement This insight is based on 47 programs including 33 on-ground and 14 online across 38 institutions.

Civitas Learning® Copyright ©2016 COMMUNITY INSIGHT 1 THE LMS ACTIVITIES THAT MATTER MOST All the most predictive LMS features are derived variables, not raw data or counts directly from the LMS. • Relative Variables: Comparing the student to peers in the same section at the same time (e.g. unique days visiting the course). • Consistency Variables: How consistent is the student across course activities (e.g. posting assignments). • Min and Max Variables: Predictive power of the highest and lowest values for grades and other activities for each student. • Average Variables: Average values across the student’s courses for different activity types (e.g. discussion posts, grades).

In looking at 440,000 student records from 17 partner institutions, we found no institutions for whom the norm referenced SAT or ACT test scores were significantly more predictive than high school data. Civitas Learning® Copyright ©2016 WHAT THE DATA ARE SAYING Based on the research, high school performance (HS GPA or class percentile) may be a better indicator of first-year success than SAT and ACT scores. • 50% of the institutions studied showed that high school data were significantly more predictive. • The other 50% showed high school GPA and ACT/SAT test scores were equally as predictive. • Zero institutions had test score data more predictive.
