Welcome to the new Mizzima Weekly !
Mizzima Media Group is pleased to announce the relaunch of Mizzima Weekly. Mizzima is dedicated to helping our readers and viewers keep up to date on the latest developments in Myanmar and related to Myanmar by offering analysis and insight into the subjects that matter. Our websites and our social media channels provide readers and viewers with up-to-the-minute and up-to-date news, which we don’t necessarily need to replicate in our Mizzima Weekly magazine. But where we see a gap is in providing more analysis, insight and in-depth coverage of Myanmar, that is of particular interest to a range of readers.
In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

You can send us an issue sheet using the template at www.gordon.army.mil , under “NOTICES”; “Town Hall.” Email the form to GORD.BEHEARD@conus.army.mil. " KEEP IT CLEAN ” • We want you to be honest, but we need the conversations to be constructive. Let’s use these conversations to solve problems, not create more. We will remove any posts that are abusive or use profanity. “ KEEP IT TO AN HOUR ” • The subject matter experts that we’ll have answering questions or providing information will only have an hour to spend with us. “ KEEP IT IN MIND ” • This is a new effort, so we may experience some growing pains along the way. Please be patient with us. Some questions we can answer on the spot, some we’ll have to look into and get you the answers. Community Town Hall

Converted both of our gas stations (Shoppettes at Gate 1 and Gate 5) from selling conventional fuel to E10 (10% Ethanol). This decision was heavily weighted with both my HQ and our Fuel Suppliers throughout the GA and SC areas. We made the conversion to E10 the 2 nd of February 2011. Our HQ was notified that the fuel terminal that supplies fuel to our locations in Georgia and South Carolina had to change to E10 by mid-February (they also supply other gas stations in GA and SC, not just AAFES/Exchange) as there would no longer be anyone in the area that would be supplying conventional fuel. Before we converted, we surveyed 25 Fuel stations surrounding Ft Gordon (All gates) and found that 95% of the gas stations were already selling E10 and a few selling E85. Those few gas stations that are selling conventional fuel now will soon have to convert this year due to current EPA (RFS) Renewable Fuel Standard Program signed in 2006 and the Energy Independence and Security Act signed in 2007 to meet Federal/EPA renewable fuel quotas. It is not mandatory and required of states to sell E10, however they are mandated a specific amount of renewable (ethanol) fuel to be sold within each state. More than 60% of the country's fuel now contains ethanol and this is expected to rapidly increase this year. Bottom line: Fuel Suppliers just cannot afford to store both conventional fuel and E10, so one by one they have converted their supply to E10 or E85 to meet the federal/state EPA requirements. Gas Stations must convert if the fuel supply availability is no longer there. We delayed this transition as long as we could, but when we ran out of Fuel in Jan for half a day at one of our shoppettes due to the supplier not being able to get conventional fuel, I had to talk to the fuel center and suppliers about the fuel; as it is unacceptable to run out of fuel for our customers. Pricing: It is about the same as conventional fuel and we are competitively priced. We survey 8 Gas Stations (only required to survey 5) surrounding Ft Gordon for our pricing twice a day/ 7 days a week. At the same time, the Exchange converted to a new world wide fuel purchasing system that was implemented at the beginning of this month that allows for fuel suppliers to provide fuel competitively to us and reduces added costs to Exchange gas stations. This has had hiccups this month that has caused delays in receiving fuel from suppliers that has affected customers waiting time. Our HQ and the suppliers have assured us that they are working to correct this and will be on track each day to ensure seamless fuel service for our customers.
