5. FREE TAX FILING SERVICES FOR MILITARY FAMILIES Military OneSource
www.MilitaryOneSource.com is once again offering free tax filing software to eligible service
members and Families through the H&R Block at Home® Basic service. The program
provides free access to a customized version of the basic H&R Block at Home® electronic
tax filing product. This customized product allows for free federal filing and free state
filing (up to three states). In addition, free telephonic tax consultations are available to
help with tax related issues. Please access your H&R Block at Home® Basic account

9. PURPLE UP! FOR MILITARY KIDS April marks the nation’s ―Month of the Military Child,‖ a
time to honor youth impacted by deployment. In celebration, Washington Operation: Military
Kids (OMK) invites you to join us for the 1st annual “Purple Up! For Military Kids.” We are
encouraging everyone across the state of Washington to wear purple on Friday, April 13th,
as a visible way to show support and thank military children for their strength and sacrifices.
Purple is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is the combination of
Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red and Navy blue. OMK hopes
everyone will take this opportunity to appreciate and celebrate these young heroes.
10. JBLM TAX CENTER is open and preparing for another busy year. The staff consists of 28
service members from the installation and two civilians with tax preparation experience.
Military members received training from the IRS’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program
and military-specific tax codes.
JBLM Tax Center is also testing a new program entitled Free Assisted Self-Service Tax
Preparation at the McChord location. FAST allows people to file taxes electronically on their
own for free with a tax preparation service, including H&R Block Free File, Turbo Tax
Freedom and TaxSlayer. A trained staff member will be on-site at the designated computer
stations to help users with filing and working with the system. Unlike recent years, the tax
center will be open on Mondays. You can call ahead to see how long the wait is prior to

50. WARRIOR ZONE at the corner of D St & 17th St., North Fort. The Warrior Zone has everything a service
member could want in a recreational facility — gaming, Internet, movies, billiards, snack bar, patio,

definition monitors for console gaming, Xbox and PS3 stations that are Internet-ready and LAN-connected

for Telehealth and Technology. It helps children of deployed parents cope with the stress, changing
responsibilities, and concern for the safety of their parents. The center, known as T2, developed the
website with informative videos, educational tools, and engaging games and activities for three age
groups: 6 to 8, 9 to 12 and 13 to 17. The site also features monitored online social network forums for the
groups to safely share their experiences with deployments. MilitaryKidsConnect.org provides a safe and
engaging way to help military youth with the day-to-day challenges of deployment, and may even help
enhance Family resilience and support for the deployed Service member.

Waller Hall is designed to assist service and Family members with managing their permanent change of
station moves. Specifically, the program offers all the resources and tools necessary to successfully
manage a move. The office has worldwide libraries of information on installations; is responsible for the
information in Plan My Move and MilitaryINSTALLATIONS; provides workshops on moving related issues
such as renting and buying homes, cultural adaptation, citizenship and immigration, and moving with
children, to name a few.
The program generally has a lending closet providing basic household equipment for service and family
members to use until their own furnishings arrive. The Relocation Assistance Program is a great resource
for assisting with spousal employment and child care concerns and answering financial questions related to
moving. Service members and their families can access emergency financial assistance such as food
closets and emergency loans, if needed, through the Relocation Assistance Program. Another important
role of the program is to train sponsors and connect service members with sponsors to facilitate swift
assimilation into the new unit. On most installations, the Relocation Assistance Program also runs a youth
sponsorship program.

22. Financial Papers - What to Keep and What to Toss
Tax Returns (including receipts and support documents): Up to 6 full

23. LAUNDRY – As much as everyone hates this household chore, it is a necessity. Removing stains and prolonging the life of
your clothes can help stretch your clothing budget. Here are some ideas to save money and get cleaner clothes in the
process:
1. Read the label. When you buy something new, read the care label. This is the best place to get information on how your
clothes should be washed and dried. If there is little information, wash them with similar colors and fabrics. Also read
the manual to your washer. The new HE washers take a lot less laundry soap.
2. Wash and dry clothes inside out to help prevent fading. You can eliminate manufacturing chemicals from new clothes
by adding ½ cup of white vinegar to the wash.
3. Use the cold or warm settings to save money. Set your rinse cycle on cold. Use the appropriate laundry detergent if you
are only using the cold settings to ensure you have clean clothes.

24. 4. Removing stains: Avoid machine drying or ironing until you have exhausted all stain removal efforts. Time and heat can
set some stains permanently.
a. Oil stains - rub white chalk or corn starch into the stain before laundering or use a small amount of baby shampoo
on a toothbrush and gently rub shampoo in, rinse and reapply if necessary.
b. Perspiration stains – mix a solution of 4 tablespoons of salt in 2 cups of hot water and rub on stain until it
disappears, then wash as normal. Another option is to spay full-strength white vinegar on the affected areas before
tossing them into the washer.
c. Blood stains – fresh: use cold water, dried: use hydrogen peroxide. Pour over stain as soon as possible, rub it
around then rinse with cold water. Another option is to sprinkle unseasoned meat tenderizer on the blood stain.
This will digest the protein in the blood and help eliminate it. Another option is to rinse it with cold water and gently
rub baby shampoo on it.
d. Chocolate – use a small amount of baby shampoo on a toothbrush and gently rub over the stain, rinse and repeat if
necessary. Another option is to use a little ammonia then rinse with cold water.

5. Brightening clothes:
a. When washing dark clothes for the first time or to brighten them use cold water and put a ½ cup of salt in the water.
The salt helps set the color.
b. Add 1 cup of white vinegar to your wash, along with your laundry detergent.
c. Half a cup of baking soda added to a full load of washing will help brighten your wash and remove odors.
6. Wash your washer occasionally. Run the machine on hot water, normal cycle, and add a gallon of white vinegar to clean
the soap film and scum that builds up inside.
7. Hard water: By adding ½ cup of borax to soften water, your clothes will get cleaner and whiter.
8. Softening clothes:
a. Cut dryer sheets in half before using. They still work just as well.
b. Add about ¼ cup white distilled vinegar to the last rinse. The acid in the vinegar is too mild to harm fabrics, yet
strong enough to dissolve the alkaline in soaps and detergents. Besides removing soap, vinegar prevents yellowing,
acts as a fabric softener and reduces static cling.
9. Clean the lint filter after each use. Also, wash the lint filter once a week with soap and water to remove build up that
causes fires.

CLOSURES AND CONSTRUCTION
103. As part of the larger effort to improve livability and functionality at Joint base Lewis McChord (JBLM),
the PENDLETON AVENUE PROJECTwill result in better traffic flow, improved parking and facility access.
It will also create an attractive bike and pedestrian-friendly environment with a tree-lined boulevard as well
as off-street parking in some areas.Construction will tentatively begin February 29, 2012, and is scheduled
to be completed September 2013. This date may change with requested change orders or unforeseen
conditions and will be updated accordingly.
Work on Pendleton Avenue will go from West to East as follows:
Work from 7th to 10th Street will be closed for approximately 4 months and will be detoured onto
Liggett at N 10th Street. MAR-JUN 2012, expected closure approximately 83 days.
7th to 10th will open up and we will work on the North half of Pendleton from 10th to 14th keeping
traffic open both ways on the south side.
