Jamie Schaab completed a service learning project at an applied behavior center working with students with autism. They initially felt nervous but knew hands-on experience would help. The main student they worked with was a 6 year, 11 month old white male diagnosed with severe autism who was non-verbal. Through matching picture tasks, Jamie saw small improvements in the student's skills over multiple visits, reinforcing their passion for helping exceptional students.

I applied theories like Piaget's idea that children learn through doing and Reggie Emelia's view that the environment shapes learning both to my parenting approach and own social life.

The student enjoyed their community service project and realized how rewarding it is to help others. They had fun with assignments like a scavenger hunt that taught them about their community and creative journal entries that explored their goals, challenges, and how to overcome obstacles. The student was excited to complete their service learning project and share what they learned from volunteering. Overall, the student gained responsibility, courage to speak up, and a better outlook by focusing on their future career rather than disliking current schoolwork. Their assessment score increased, giving them more confidence. Their goals included graduating with a business degree and having a successful career in human resources.
ABA Analysis
1) John, a 5-year old African American boy, exhibits off-task and disruptive behavior like speaking without permission and distracting peers in the classroom.
2) Through observations, his behaviors were found to occur most during independent seatwork and carpet time, and seem to be motivated by a desire for attention.
3) A behavior intervention plan was created to teach John to raise his hand before speaking as a replacement behavior. He will do self-monitoring and can earn stickers and prizes for demonstrating the replacement behavior. The goal is to reduce off-task behavior and increase attention-appropriate behaviors.

- 4. I was not allowed to take pictures of the students or the inside of the school. The photo release forms were only for the schools use.
- 5. My name is Jamie Schaab I love sports and have played them my whole life. Especially soccer and flag football. I have the deepest passion for exceptional students and I want to specialize in Autism. I have been in two exceptional classrooms now and loved every minute of it. I can't wait to go to internship two and learn more.
- 11. Manding skills- asking or doing a sign language sign in order to ask for something the student wants.
- 15. I was not allowed to take pictures of students or work that was completed due to confidentiality.
- 16. I helped with other students about 4 of them but mainly worked with this one.
- 18. Seeing him grow from the few hours I worked with him, just makes me know if I was his teacher for a year he would grow so much more.
- 19. I will take away from this the paitence needed to work with these students. I had to teach the same thing each time I was there and to see him grow the smallest amount was the best thing in the world.
- 20. My academic learning experience taught me how to work with these students and the strategies to use when doing so. For example modeling what is expected before assigning something, or setting a purpose. I now know what it is like to work with students with autism and some of the methods that will work with students.
