Most people hear the word verbal behavior and automatically think of speech. Skinner defined
verbal behavior as "behavior reinforced through the mediation of other persons needs" (Skinner,
2015, p. 2). It is in this definition that we can find understanding in the true meaning of verbal
behavior; "any movement capable of affecting another organism may be verbal" (Skinner, 2015,
p.14) if, when and how it affects the listener. Knowing this, we can understand that verbal behavior
goes beyond vocalizations and can include other forms that affect the listener.
Children diagnosed with ASD usually have some form of communication delay, some may even
have an absence of any meaningful verbal behavior. "The absence of vocal verbal behavior leaves
minimally vocal children without an effective form of communication" (Carbone et al., 2010, p.
705). In this absence, children without effective forms of communication are usually left feeling
frustrated and will demonstrate some sort of socially inappropriate behaviors like aggression.

perfectly describe how successful communication should function. In today's world, people are not
always honest when communicating with their peers. Most of them are not honest and open because
they are afraid of being judged, or they do not want to hurt the other person's feelings. For an
example, the recent presidential election. I knew of people favoring president Trump and were
afraid to tell their friends and family because they did not want to be judged or having their friends
or families leaving them for their personal opinion. In a way, when having a discussion with peers
one should not be freighted to say what they believe in. A failure in communication occurs when
someone is not honest to others and letting others know how they feel about any subjects. My
personal experience from this was when I was not honest to my friend, Zoey, how she was treating
me. I failed to be honest and open and that led to mistreatment and an unhappy friendship. From this

qualities that are important, like: empathy, clarity, physical expression, and effort. Empathy is
important because without understanding where someone is coming you cannot properly understand
what they are saying in many situations. For example, one expression can have different emotions
for different people, like "I went to my grandparent's house." For some people this is a happy thing,
while for others it may be uncomfortable, in this situation empathy would help create an appropriate
response. Clarity is also important, if you leave an unclear message your words may be

misunderstanding due to lack of clarity. Physical expression is also important because your actions
towards another person, as well as facial expressions, can impact the view of a conversation or make

Cliché is a barrier of communication because it entails the use of once clever word or phrase that

a biomedical perspective. According to this perspective, disability is about having functional
limitations mostly caused by a health condition and some are caused by genetics. Disability can
occur to anyone at any time, even some individuals are born with a disability. There are many kinds
of disabilities, it can be difficulties in vision, hearing, physical, speech or language, learning, and
much more. Some of these disabilities are permanent and visible but some are hidden or cannot be

Recently, I was asked to write about a time when I failed to effectively communicate. I have failed
to do so in many situations when I was younger, but those times are nothing compared to my worst
miscommunication ever! In this case, I failed to effectively communicate with my parents. As a

school was to start. I wouldn't normally be excited for school, however, this year was my senior year

We are losing our listening because of a noisy world, the technological advances of audio and video
recording, personal broadcasting, and media headlines. It is becoming harder for us to pay attention
because of all of the world's noises and the media taking our attention. We need to take time out to
be aware of sounds to improve listening which heighten our senses to improve the ability to pay

Talking about communication involves talking about the identity of the person talking as a
communicative being therefore about his right to communicate.
In other words, for every subject speaking, the question is to know whether or not it makes sense for
them to do so. If not, they would not exist as a subject.
Sometimes norms, more or less institutionalized, help answering that question: for example, a
lecturer presented as so in a conference finds himself entitled to speaking. Same goes for a host

Before analysing the video is important to define what is communication. Communication is an act
of transmitting information such as thoughts, ideas, and emotions furthermore, those elements can
also be expressed with verbal communication and nonverbal gestures, signs, and symbols (Hargie,
2011). Moreover, it is necessary to understand the difference between conventional implication and
conversational implication. In the first case the linguistical meaning is attached to the message itself

In the video, there are two sets of parents meeting to find a solution to the incident that happened
between their children. The couples are gathered together in the apartment of the attacked child

Language allows us to bring life to things, people, places and experiences. However, choices of
what language to use has an impact on perception of our message, so when communicating it is
important to know not only how different language can benefit a communication, but also how it
can be a hindrance. There are 6 barriers in language that can have ill–effects on the message that is
being conveyed: clichés, jargon, slang, sexism/racism, euphemisms and doublespeak. This essay
will describe each so that they will be easy to recognize and avoid in the communication process.
Clichés are phrases, words or references that lack originality. "Actions speak louder than words,"
"The grass is always greener on the other side," "Don't judge a book by its cover," and "you can't
please everyone" are all examples of clichés that you may have heard. The main hindrance of
clichés is that they have been overused, minimizing their impact (McLean, 2010). Since clichés "are
general statements that do not add any detailed evidence or unique support," (The University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill, n.d.) communications including these words or phrases take on a
more commonly–associated meaning than specifically what you are trying to convey (McLean,
2010).
Jargon is another way to lessen the impact of a communication. Jargon is language specific to an

In the genome editing class, we had to work with our lab partner, and almost all tasks required us to
work together as a team. Anyhow, we had several presentations that needed to be done together as a
team. On our first presentation, my lab partner and I discussed which sections we would each cover,
splitting the assignment in exactly half. Therefore, deciding how we would divide the presentation
was an excellent start, but apparently, he felt that was all we needed to discuss. Consequently, that
was the extent of our communication since I did not hear from him until the day of class when we
were doing our presentation. In my mind, for all, I knew he didn't even do his portion of the
presentation, and I expected constant communication while working on the project. Apparently, he
felt that no communication was appropriate, however, I felt nervous and uncomfortable. Anyhow, I
arrived at class and handed him my thumb drive with my portion of the presentation. I told him we
need to exchange numbers, and emails so when we work on our other presentations that we can
communicate and aid each other. I explained to him that all weekend I had worried that he did not
do his portion of the project since I had no contact or communication with him at all. He replied
why wouldn't I work on my section? I replied I am not familiar with you or your work ethic.

The significance of this ethical dilemma shows the vulnerability of the patient and how this
language barrier may have unconsciously served as a manipulating tool of persuading the patient to
have the therapeutic procedure. Thence, perpetuating the existing power relation differences
between the patient and nurse relationship. The language barrier does not provide an excuse for not
advocating a patient's access to quality nursing care and for social justice as a human right. I have
the moral obligation in recognising and ensuring that my patients have the knowledge and skills to
make free and informed decisions. Therefore, developing skills to communicate with patients who
speak in other languages other than English is pertinent for nurses as it ensures that patients with the
legal capacity and sound mind have the right to be autonomous, make self–determined decisions
and not out of mere compliance. A professional component that this clinical incident vividly points

texting, and other forms of abbreviated communication has come across us, making it more facile
for us to communicate in the cyber world. Many of us question whether it affects our day to day

David Crystal describes the phenomenon of texting and how it has come to be (241). Similarly, Kris
