What Will The Communication
Technology Landscape Look Like
In 2025 A.D.?
2. Communication Technology
Print Era
Newspapers, Periodicals, Books
Been around for hundreds of years
Digital Era
Telegraph, Telephone, Motion Pictures, Audio Recording,
Radio, Television, Cable Television, Direct Broadcast Satellite,
Home Video
Been around for close to 200+ years
Electronic Era (Present)
Computers, Internet, Social Applications, Tablets
Close to 40 years
3. Then, Now, and Later
Past
The lack of technology wasn’t geared towards communication
which made it difficult for people to communicate
Present
Technology is now geared toward social interaction and
communication and allows people to stay in touch and
communicate through electronic devices
Future
In the future I see similar technology just with more
advancements. For example, I see holographs coming out of
cell phones, tablets, televisions, etc.
4. Theory #1: Uses and Gratification Theory
What is it?
The Uses and Gratification Theory is just how it sounds… it is how
individuals uses the world of media for their own needs and gratification.
4 Types of Needs
1. Affective Needs
Moods such as emotions or pleasures
2. Tension Free Needs
Means of how to relieve stress
3. Social Integrative Needs
The need to socialize with people (friends, family, etc.)
4. Personal Integrative Needs
The need to acquire self-esteem
5. Uses and Gratification Theory Examples
(in the future)
Video Games
More of an interactive experience where you feel as if you are
inside the game
Cellular Devices
I think that there will be features such as FaceTime but that it
will be in the form of holographics
Tablets
I think the future of tablets will revolve around holographics
and tablets will be the main technology of use in the future
6. Theory #2:
Social Learning Theory/Social
According to Grant (2014, p. 27), social learning
focuses on how people learn by modeling
others…this observational learning occurs when
watching another person model the behavior and or
watching the behavior on television or a computer
screen.
In the future I see this theory coming into play
through the complete usage of tablets, laptops, and
smart phones in place of any paper items (books,
notebooks, etc.)
7. Theory #3:
Media Dependency Theory
What is it?
The Media Dependency Theory is an internal link between
media, audience, and a large social system.
Individual:
The media has the ability to satisfy the needs of the audience
Active Audience:
Based on individual needs and factors such as society and
culture
Social Stability:
The audience will actually reconsider things like their belief
system, their practice and their behaviors
8. Media Dependency Theory Examples
In the future (much like how it is now), certain
groups will be more drawn to certain types of social
media.
For example, I believe that Twitter will be the most
effective way to get live feeds from things like sports
games and news coverage.
I believe that Instagram will be the main source for
individuals to live out their social life and to share
photos with family and friends.
