They also plan to incorporate energy conservation and recycling into their resident services programs.

Designing a physical hand-held device presents a number of unique challenges. Designing that device predominantly for use by folks with impaired physical abilities introduces another layer of complexity. Ensuring that the experience is appropriate for an audience ranging from five year-old kids to ninety five year-old retirees while they control one of their primary senses is just downright difficult.
Matt & Shane recently worked with Australian innovator and international success story Cochlear in design of a new device to help bionic ear implant recipients monitor and control their hearing. The design represented an evolution to a simpler more usable second-generation device.
Matt & Shane are joined by Cochlear Technical Product Lead (and some time “User Fairy”) Rami Banna as they walk through key aspects of this project.
Particular attention is given to:
Design artefacts including wireframes and screen mock-ups illustrating the evolution from early design concepts through to refined user interface.
The full UX lifecycle including; ethnographic research, iterative interaction design cycles and usability testing with real Cochlear implant recipients.
The approach taken to coordinate a design exercise across multiple teams including; industrial design, ergonomics, electronics, software design, graphic design and small screen user interface design.
The delicate balance required when attempting to improve a user experience without completely confounding the expectations of a large and vocal existing user-base.
The objective of this case study is to provide conference delegates with genuine insight into the design process by exposing the methods but also by showing the actual designs at various points of their development.
Along the way, we will detail the pitfalls encountered and outline the practical solutions that were applied. Processes and lessons learned are applicable across UX projects of all types, not just mobile and hand-held product design projects.

Here is a description of his presentation: COPs, or “Communities of Practice,” are groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something, and work together to do it better. The session will highlight how Imagine!, New York-based Living Resources and Connecticut-based Ability Beyond are working together to improve services and supports through technology. The three organizations regularly share information and resources and have worked together to design an assessment that helps organizations identify and prioritize technologies to improve the supports they provide. Attendees will learn about this successful collaboration along with a demonstration of the assessment.

Building Community Through Collaboration
At the 2013 Coleman Institute for Cognitive Disabilities’ National Conference, Imagine! tech guru Alex Andrews and University of Colorado Professor Melinda Piket-May gave a presentation on a collaboration which involved CU Engineering students creating assistive technologies for individuals with developmental disabilities served by Imagine!. Imagine! Timeline
Imagine! is a nonprofit organization that provides support services to people with disabilities in Colorado. Over 50 years, it has expanded its services and now supports over 2,600 individuals annually. In 2012 specifically, Imagine! provided services including behavioral health support, job training, early intervention for children, family support services, residential placements, adult day programs, and assistance with healthcare coordination.
Community Life Project Presentation
The Community Life Project presentation covered how technology can increase accessibility and independence for those with disabilities. It discussed Endeavor Desktop, social media, remote monitoring, parental controls, an assistive technology lab, screening processes, using iPads in children's services, and supported employment task prompting. The presentation was given by Kevin Harding, Sterling Wind, and Alex Andrews and included an agenda, descriptions of various technologies and organizations, and encouraged questions.

Cell Therapy Expansion and Challenges in Autoimmune Disease
There is increasing confidence that cell therapies will soon play a role in the treatment of autoimmune disorders, but the extent of this impact remains to be seen. Early readouts on autologous CAR-Ts in lupus are encouraging, but manufacturing and cost limitations are likely to restrict access to highly refractory patients. Allogeneic CAR-Ts have the potential to broaden access to earlier lines of treatment due to their inherent cost benefits, however they will need to demonstrate comparable or improved efficacy to established modalities.
In addition to infrastructure and capacity constraints, CAR-Ts face a very different risk-benefit dynamic in autoimmune compared to oncology, highlighting the need for tolerable therapies with low adverse event risk. CAR-NK and Treg-based therapies are also being developed in certain autoimmune disorders and may demonstrate favorable safety profiles. Several novel non-cell therapies such as bispecific antibodies, nanobodies, and RNAi drugs, may also offer future alternative competitive solutions with variable value propositions.
Widespread adoption of cell therapies will not only require strong efficacy and safety data, but also adapted pricing and access strategies. At oncology-based price points, CAR-Ts are unlikely to achieve broad market access in autoimmune disorders, with eligible patient populations that are potentially orders of magnitude greater than the number of currently addressable cancer patients. Developers have made strides towards reducing cell therapy COGS while improving manufacturing efficiency, but payors will inevitably restrict access until more sustainable pricing is achieved.
Despite these headwinds, industry leaders and investors remain confident that cell therapies are poised to address significant unmet need in patients suffering from autoimmune disorders. However, the extent of this impact on the treatment landscape remains to be seen, as the industry rapidly approaches an inflection point.
