WHAT IS DEMENTIA ?
Exceptional Care Solutions©
 Dementia (taken from Latin, originally meaning
"madness", from de- "without" + ment, the root of
mens "mind") is a serious loss of global cognitive
ability in a previously unimpaired person, beyond
what might be expected from normal aging.

DEMENTIA
Exceptional Care Solutions©
 Dementia
 About 750,000 people in the UK have dementia –
 and this number is expected to double in the next
thirty years. DofH
Designing the environment for People with Dementia
Exceptional Care Solutions©
 Senses
Designing for people with dementia should
enable people to make the best use of any and all of
their senses that they are still able to use.

 Domestic scale
 Clear visibility, multiple clues
 Avoidance of confusion/minimising distractions
 Ease of use and understanding
 Importance of activity and exercise (ADL)
Designing for Dementia

 The Basics
 Room space/adjacencies
 Visibility/Permeability
 Wayfinding / Way markers
 Scale
 Privacy / Sociability
 Sensory enhancement (comfort)
Designing for Dementia
Exceptional Care Solutions©
 Ideally 2 storeys high – as not ideal in the future if
someone with Dementia was on a 3rd floor.
 Making the grounds totally secure especially if one
has dementia – older people want to feel safe and
secure.
 Allotment facilities where possible for the green
fingered.
 People want facilities and out door space, which have
a massive well being factor for us all.
Designing for Dementia
Exceptional Care Solutions©
 Assistive Technology
Technology is great – but quite often people will only turn towards this
option when a crisis point has been hit – telecare and alarms are still
undervalued – but by installing such technology in the first instances
when flats/apartments are built as new builds is imperative – many older
people without dementia will drift off and take a nap or forget that a bath
is running or something is on the stove – but telecare can step in to avoid
stress or tragic events. Environmental control systems can enable any
individual to operate everyday domestic appliances if its in place.
 There are the ethics of using monitoring equipment.
Domiciliary Care
Exceptional Care Solutions©
 Living with Dementia can be made so much easier -
having a care at home facility (domically care) is
great onsite.
 With personalisation there is a choice and the
individual has the right to choose what service
provision they wish to employ.
What is Extra Care Housing
Exceptional Care Solutions©
 Types of Extra Care Housing
 Extra care housing may come in the form of:
 A retirement village
 A block of apartments or flats
 A bungalow development
 Extra care housing usually provides most of the facilities
that residents need on-site, for example a laundry, a
community area and sometimes even a restaurant.
 Residents of extra care housing will have access to care
either on-site or through a care home, as extra care
housing is often built very close to or next to care homes.

Paying for Extra Care
 The cost of extra care housing varies depending on who it is run by and what
the needs are. Extra care housing schemes run by the council or Housing
Association will usually be affordable private may be more expensive.
Components
Rent/mortgage
 The accommodation can often be rented, or purchased or part-buy/part-rent
and paid on a monthly basis as you would in most types of housing. As often
people want to feel that at least they have invested some of their money to use
later on if requiring Nursing care or to pass onto ones family.
Service charges
 There will usually be service charges for the maintenance and staffing of the
communal areas of extra care housing.
Care
 There may be a number of care needs, such as needing help moving around or
needing help with washing, dressing and cooking.
Exceptional Care Solutions©
'The Future Cost of Housing Benefit for Older
People'
Exceptional Care Solutions©
 There is growing awareness that among today's younger
generation, a larger proportion may rent throughout their life
compared to previous cohorts. However, in debate on
'generation rent', little consideration has been given to the fact
that many people who rent in retirement rely on state support
for their housing costs, in the form of means tested Housing
Benefit.
 A recent report explores how trends in longevity and tenure
will affect the future cost of Housing Benefit for older people
in the very long term. Using projections of owner-occupation
rates and the number of retirees in 2060, the report finds that
the UK Exchequer will have to spend an extra £8.13 billion on
Housing Benefit for pensioners each year compared to today.
Care and Support Reform
Exceptional Care Solutions©
 The Government has published its Care and Support White Paper and
the draft Care and Support Bill
 Of particular note is the £200 million fund announced for investment
to encourage providers “to develop new accommodation options for
older people and disabled adults” over the next five years. Full details of
the fund have not yet been published and are promised for October.
 As widely reported in the press, decisions on possible capping of
individuals’ financing of later life care costs have been postponed.
What’s needed
Exceptional Care Solutions©
 At every stage and in every setting, there needs to be a
greater focus on local delivery of quality outcomes and local
accountability for achieving them.
 Strong leadership and support with effective decision
making.
 The right team with an emphasis on working as a
partnership.
 Quality of staff to ensure that the care is personal to the
individual and not just a corporate mission based on profit
alone.
Loneliness
Exceptional Care Solutions©
"Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for,
forgotten by everybody, I think that is a
much greater hunger, a much greater
poverty than the person who has nothing to
eat.“
Mother Teresa
Conclusion.
Exceptional Care Solutions©
 An individual can live extremely well with a great
quality of life whilst living with Dementia.
 If the complex has been skilfully designed.
 With up to date technology.
 Great management/leadership on site.
 With a care provision on site.
