The security market in India is growing and expected to reach $1.06 billion by 2015 due to more companies investing in security solutions. There is an increasing demand for skilled security labor as specialized skills become more important for employment. Security studies courses are being offered to train personnel for the growing security industry. The security industry shifted focus after the 2008 Mumbai attacks, and now training courses and government schemes aim to promote security training. Key challenges for the private security industry include ensuring compliance with regulations, supplying adequately trained personnel, and classifying security guards by their training and skills. This document promotes a college that aims to train rural students to become skilled security guards that meet regulatory training requirements.
2. Changing Scenario
Security market in India is expected to touch $ 1.06 billion
by 2015 as an increasing number of enterprises invest in
these solutions to protect their business especially in the
digital world.
The market trend is changing, the demand for skilled labor
is increasing whereas unskilled labour forces are being
denied. Importance for ‘specialized skill’ is increasing,
students are opting for such courses that result in
employment. One such option is ‘Security Studies’.
Government has set a target of skilling around 50 crore
people by 2020. Government has also increased the
percentage from 25% to 49% FDI in defence sector.
3. With increasing living standards, the value for
education and employment is increasing rapidly.
Various Institutions have marked the beginning of
launching courses related to specialized skills. These
Skills make it easy for trained personnel to obtain
favorable jobs.
One Industry that is providing training and
employment is “Security Industry”. The Security
Industry went through a shift after Mumbai 26/11
attack. The country suffered from a huge loss and from
then ‘Security’ has been given utmost importance.
Institutions are initiating training courses and
government is launching schemes to promote security
training.
4. Challenges in the Private Security
Industry
Compliance concerns
The centre drafted Private Security Agencies (Regulation)
(PSAR) Act in 2005 and encouraged the
states to enact & enforce it. All most all states have adopted
the Act.
The following issues are most like to get addressed upon
the implementation of the Act.
1. The provisions in the Act make it easy to start a security
business and if the business is not
registered, the exit is also very easy. Substandard service
offering and delivery is a also a
common practice
5. 2. The supply of manpower to the industry is most often
from rural and interior parts of India.
They are barely literate and most often not trained to
assume the role of a security guard.
However, considering that the demand to supply
mismatch is to the tune of 30 per cent, all
of them get absorbed.
3. There is a specific need for identifying and classifying
or grading the security personnel
according to the trainings undertaken to help them be
placed in the jobs they specialize and
also help determine remuneration.
6. 4. Today, the scope of a guard’s work has expanded vastly and
includes everything from preventing industrial espionage
and conducting electronic surveillance to providing personal
security, conducting investigations and managing facilities.
Lack of trained personnel is thebane of the industry. PSAR
Act 2005 makes it mandatory for every guard to undergo at
least 160 hours of training. 100 hours of classroom learning
and 60 hours of on-the-job training.
5. We are pioneers in this Industry, we aim to train students
from rural background and shape them into skilled security
guards under PSAR Regulations.
