Whole Food Failure
Due to new entrants in the competitions for natural and organic food, companies take on
adjustment strategies in order to satisfy the increase in demand and supply and maximize profit.
In 2015, Whole foods failed to satisfy the companies projection of 6% growth and due to selling,
general and administrative expenses suffered a fall in its net profit by 56% compared to 2014
fourth quarter (Bells, 2015). The downfall was mainly caused by increase in total cost due to
operational expenses rose from ~29% in Q4 2014 to ~32% of the total revenue in Q4 2015 (Belle,
2015). In 2016 the company takes on newly developed strategies in order to lower the cost of
production and expense and raise its gross margin percentage, which also dropped in Q4 2014 by
almost one whole point to 34.5% (Bells, 2015).

In 2015 the company s share price fell by 40% due to the strong competition it faced by
Kroger,17% rise, Costco more then 10% rise (Bells, 2015). Walmart still holds the biggest market
share in the retail field but also entered the organic food market pretty easily by offering natural and
organic products at its lowest price guarantee and price match techniques. The four firm
concentration ratio for the market is at high 87.7% making its bold statement about the big players
in the market and the oligopoly industry (Statista, n.d.). It is a difficult task for stores like
Albertsons to enter the organic food market due to the influence and unbeatable prices majority of
the competitors offer. Since the organic products salesare in no way a new innovation or something
we have not seen before a fair opportunity is given to anyone guaranteeing good quality and prices.
However, a big brand like Whole Foods controls a big portion of the organic food market and
therefor its is unlikely for a new developing store to survive on it

The Striped Pajamas By John Boyne
Most people view the Holocaust as one of the worst things that has ever happened in human
history. It s very difficult to argue this belief. Not only were millions of people killed in battle,
but millions were killed outside of battle. After his murder of over six million Jews, Adolf Hitler
became regarded as one of the most hated and evil people in the world, and still is today.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a novel based on this time period. Written in 2006 by an Irish
author named John Boyne, it is about a boy named Bruno who is nine years old growing up in
Germany during the second World War. Even though it is written by an Irish author and not a
German one, it is well known for depicting just how bad the Nazi concentration camps ... Show

The Summary of Literature will summarize The Boy in the Striped Pajamas well enough so that
the reader can gain a basic understanding of the core plot of the novel.
Lastly, the Literary
Analysis will analyze the main point of this essay: despite there being dozens of themes in The Boy
in the Striped Pajamas, it is clear that the main ones are friendship, human nature, and innocence.
Cultural and Historical Context
John Boyne was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1971, and studied English Literature at Trinity College,
Dublin, and creative writing at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, where he was awarded the
Curtis Brown prize (Boyne, Web).
Boyne s early writing consisted mostly of short stories and the first one he published, The
Entertainments Jar, was shortlisted for the Hennessy Literary Award in Ireland (Boyne, Web).
Many of his stories have appeared in magazines and anthologies (Boyne, Web).
He has published nine novels for adults and four for younger readers, including The Boy in the
Striped Pajamas which was a New York Times no. 1 Bestseller and was made into a Miramax
feature film (Boyne, Web). It has sold more than 6 million copies worldwide (Boyne, Web). Boyne
is also a regular book reviewer for The Irish Times and has been a judge for both the Hennessy

Psychological Hypnosis
Throughout many year, hypnosis has evolved using a variety of techniques. Most of the techniques
were commonly used to perform clinical methods and principles. Psychologists had discovered the
aristocracy and medical theories of hypnosis by introducing it into the course for curing psychiatric
and physical illnesses. As the phenomena transforms throughout centuries, the origin of its term
follows. Medical doctors in France have embraced the new term hypnotism by the late 1800s,
although they had originally used the term mesmerism for the symptoms (Upshaw, 2006).
However, mass changes of techniques, clinical methods, and principles have been made as many
practitioners decline the opportunity to further enhance their knowledge and devote... Show more

Consequently psychotherapy for medicinal purposes have not succeeded in accomplishing
acceptance to this day. The correlation towards this statement is the explanation that practitioners
refrain from looking into the theoretical understanding that psychological hypnosis is nothing other
than a natural process, which in this case, is often perceived to be impossible for students to learn
and to demonstrate the psychological changes thoroughly in order to practice and engage the
skilful needs to interpret a hypnotist. The first half of the 20th century ingrained hypnosis in the
public perception as a form of mind control, and the tool of spiritual seekers looking for past lives
(Upshaw, 2006). Oftentimes, surgeons would use hypnosis as a form of surgical anaesthetics to
alter the patient into the desired trance. This frequent treatment occurred without the use of
medicinal anaesthesia by clinicians to relieve the pain before undergoing a surgical procedure.
Along the previous years, the theory of hypnosis has made drastic changes in prospect, however the
potential outcome on whether hypnosis should be treated in a negative way, or positive way varies

Voltaire s View Of Candide
Voltaire s Candide is a satirical work written in 1759 as a commentary during the Enlightenment.
One of Voltaire s most famous works, it also functioned to reflect Voltaire s opinions. Candide is
considered Voltaire s signature work in which he levels his sharpest criticism against nobility,
philosophy, the church, and human cruelty. Though often considered a representative text of the
Enlightenment era, the novel criticizes a number of Enlightenment philosophies. As reading and
books were a sign of wealth in that time, the trend among nobility was reading. The criticisms and
ridicule within the satirical nature of Candidehad much to do with the nobility and their standards
and ideas, especially in contrast with those of the lower classes. Through the form and technique of
satire in Candide, Voltairesuggests the absurdity of societal principles and theories.
Throughout the novel, Candide s teacher and philosopher, Pangloss, persists in his paternalistic
optimism theory. He continually expresses his belief that this world is the best of all possible
worlds and that everything happens and exists for a reason. One example is after the earthquake
in Lisbon, killing 30,000 people, Pangloss comments, For, said he, all that is for the best. If there
is a volcano at Lisbon it cannot be elsewhere. It is impossible that things should be other than they
are; for everything is right (5.14). Pangloss insists that the volcano was made for the exact purpose
of the earthquake

Nuclear Waste Disposal Essay example
Nuclear Waste Disposal
As the millenium approaches, we are faced with the problems created by our technological
advances. Everyday we are forced to see the results, from acid rain to polluted beaches. But there
is one problem in particular that will probably out live our generation and the generation which has
created it. If properly contained and monitored, it has little affect on us and our environment.
However, once it is free of it s containment, it is a destructive and deadly force. This problem is
nuclear waste.
Thirty thousand metric tons of spent fuel rods from power reactors and another 380,000 cubic
meters of high level radioactive waste, have been produced in the United States since the beginning
of the nuclear age. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a nuclear reactor of a nuclear power plant, the fission process is contained within the
zirconium or magnesium cladding that surrounds the fuel rods. The fuel rods are spent after the
fission takes place. They are highly radioactive and give off dangerous gamma radiation, which is
similar to X ray and can therefore penetrate through a human body. It is necessary to shield the
spent fuel rods with water and thick lead walls (Bertell, 1985). These fuel rods and their contents,
are essentially what comprises nuclear waste and is what needs to be kept secure for hundreds of
thousands of years.
Two types of radiation
There are two types of radiation; particle and penetrating. Penetrating radiation or gamma radiation,
can pass through human tissue and damages cell functions. After about 500 years, gamma radiation
in nuclear fuel waste drops to low enough levels that it poses no real threat to humans (AECB,
1992). Particle radiation includes alphan and beta radiation. This type of radiation is given off by
the longer lived radioactive substances. This means that the substances remain hazardous for many
thousands of years. Neither these types can penetrate human tissue. However, they can affect cell
function and therefore cause cancer if the radioactive substance has been ingested or inhaled

This involved building a new transmission line, refurbishing of the oldest generating plant,
improving operating efficiency at all plants, and buying a majority share in a coal burning plant

nuclear plant availability had risen to 83% (industry average: 70%), and fossil fuel plant
availability risen to 89% (Industry average: 83%).
These expenditures are funded through internal profits and by issuing $3.7 billion of long term
debt and $1.9 billion common stock. Headcount reduced by 30% while operating and maintenance

largest utility in Florida by 1994 (fourth largest in the country).
Financially 1993 was a record year: FPL s capital expenditure was expected to decline by 33% over

Community Meeting Review
Community Meeting Review For my project I visited the City of Hesperia s Official Website

The beginning of the meeting started with a call of order then proceeded to the roll call of the
board members. After these steps had taken place an invocation was performed followed by the
Pledge of Allegiance. I have never heard of a prayer referred to as an invocation and it prompted
me to review the words definition, a public request for guidance, good will, good wishes, and good

Attorney who provided further comparisons of water and values. The meeting continued with
the Joint Consent Calendar, the consent calendar is a grouping of routine matters to be acted on
in one motion. There were six items considered and recommended actions taken anywhere from
issues related to utilities to professional services. At the end of this presentation it was open to
public hearing providing any concerned resident an opportunity to speak. This was followed by
consent ordinances which city staff members began to speak about Community Development
Block Grant (CDBG) and its draft citizen participation plan for years 2015 2019. This was
followed by an ordinance for the Civic Plaza which would limit the use of skateboards, bicycles,
and leashed animals during special events held at this location. Following these issues the council
would make a decision which would be placed on record for public view. New business was
proposed where an approval of long ranged property management was projected, but they motioned
to push this event forward to the next meeting due to the absence of a council member who was
more familiar with the issue. A final request to those

The Rights Of Freedom Of Speech
The Founders made the press a First Amendment priority in the United States Constitution as a
protected role to act as a check on elected officials. The press was part of the Constitutional
checks and balances in holding elected officials accountable and to be observant for exploitation,
as the press were in essence the eyes and ears of the people. Freedom of the press is the irrefutable
privilege to propagate opinions in print without censorship by the government. Americans enjoy
freedom of the press under the First Amendment to the Constitution, which states: Congress shall
make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or
abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Assisting the American public to view and absorb real facts and evidence, in order to expose the
new most corrupt President in United States history, Donald J. Trump.
What the press has done in investigative journalism is nothing short of the very best of American
know how, pride and grit. With the additional evidence constantly leaking through the current White
House like a sieve, is overwhelmingly apparent to the majority of political pundits and syndicated
columnists, that this author is going to be proven completely and irrefutably accurate...
The abuse of this power is also just as frightening as a sitting President being controlled or
manipulated by a foreign power, in order to undermine the American government and its supportive
political structure, in hopes of weakening there most hated nemesis, the United States of America.
And on that account, that brings us to U.S. news organization, Fox News...
There is such a thing as alternative facts however, it is better known by its ancient Latin name,
known to us all as pure bull shit. Yes, it s the carefully manipulated and chaotically fabricated news
reporting in order to not use the freedom of press for the good of mankind, rather, to use their forum
to indoctrinate or brainwash their unsuspecting test subjects.

The Influence Of Lying In High School
Two days after a big math test, I was sitting in my usual seat in the back of the class while our
teacher was handing back our test grades. Because I was in the back of the class, I got my grade
last. The time it took the teacher to arrive to the last row felt like the waiting line at the airport; the
time just stopped. My minddrifted while I thoughtabout what I got on the test. I had studied hard
for that test, but I was not sure if I performed well enough for a high grade. My test sliding onto
my table snapped me back to reality. When I looked at it, I felt relieved. Written in red stood 98
/100, but when I saw the comment beside, my smile left my face. He had commented one word:
Fine. I could not understand why. Was he not pleased with me? I have always thought that fine
meant, you did all right, just okay, or not too bad. After class, I approached the teacher and asked
him why he was not pleased with my grade. He looked at me, surprised, and said, What do you

what was going on with me. The easy way out, without telling them the truth, was just saying I am
fine, and try to fake a smile. Telling them I was just feeling more homesick than usual. People often

The Correlation Of Commercial Success And True Artistry
Questioning the correlation of commercial success and true artistry began in the light of
mainstream music. Mainstream music has been given a negative connotation due to the supposed
lack of originality of the artists. Repetitive chord progressions and meaningless lyrics compose the
majority of mainstream music, making each song sound like the next . Despite these patterns in
music, artists still ventured outside of what was societally normal and created music that was
unheard of. Despite the potential risks in being an individual in the music industry, several groups
achieved high success and maintain the popularity in the present. Creativity and commercial
success can definitely exist alongside one another, and this paper will prove that through the music
of the Beatles, the performance styles of David Bowie, and the grunge movement in Seattle which
was fueled by Nirvana.
The Beatles started as an English skiffle group in the late 1950s. By the time they reached their
peak popularity, the term Beatlemania was coined to explain the frenzied obsession with the group.
A former associate editor from Rolling Stone drew a comparison between the Beatles and Picasso,
calling them artists that broke through their time period to come up with something that was
unique and original. Throughout their discography, the Beatles have time and time again released
music that both broke musical trends and engrossed the masses. They have held an unprecedented

Analysis Of The Certainty Of Fools By Daniel Kahneman
Fear of Uncertainty Voltaire once said, Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is an
absurd one. We live in a world that is constantly changing and does not grant the certainty that
people desire. But, people want the stability of knowing what is going to happen; this is why
certainty is absurd. In his essay The Surety of Fools, Daniel Kahneman provides examples of
people using a phenomenon he calls the illusion of validity. These people strongly believe their
actions cause a specific outcome, when in reality there is statistical evidence that shows their
actions have no direct correlation with the outcome. While Kahneman argues the illusion of
validity comes partially from people s tendency to make quick decisions without fully conveying
the causes, it really stems from people s fear of uncertainty. The fear of uncertainty is deeply
engrained within our society in academia and in our decision making. Kahneman argues that
the illusion of validity comes from fast thinking because it is prone to doubt. However, he
neglects to mention that fast thinking roots itself in the fear of uncertainty. Kahneman begins
his essay by describing his experience in evaluating future soldier s ability in order to predict
what kind of leader they may be. The researchers put the soldiers in a high pressure environment
and judged the soldiers on their actions in a given situation. For example, one test involved
eight men, complete strangers to one another, on an obstacle field and their goal was to haul a
log over a six foot wall. The researchers took note of who took charge, who was stubborn and how
the soldiers interacted with each other. Using those observations, the researchers made predictions
of what kind of leaders they believed each soldier would become. However, follow up sessions
with the soldiers showed that the soldiers may have been overshadowed by another soldier, just
having a bad day or were more outgoing than normal during the challenge. So, the follow up
sessions statistically proved that Kahneman s predictions were not accurate enough to be helpful.
As Kahneman put it, Our forecasts were better than blind guesses, but not by much. So, the research
and observations, while they seemed to

Lakota Woman The book Lakota Woman, is an autobiography that depicts Mary Crow Dog and
Indians Lives. Because I only had a limited knowledge on Indians, the book was full of
surprising incidents. Moreover, she starts out her story by describing how her Indian friends died
in miserable and unjustifiable ways. After reading first few pages, I was able to tell that Indians
were mistreated in the same manners as African Americans by whites. The only facts that make it
look worse are, Indians got their land stolen and prejudice and inequality for them still exists. Just

spiritual people. Despite all the double standard they have faced all their lives, Indians survived and

Schizophrenia Is A Disease Process That Is Characterized...
Schizophrenia is a disease process that is characterized by periods of irrational behavior, emotional
changes, and distorted views of reality. According to the National Institute for Health and Care
Excellence, this illness affects about one percent of the population. In the past, the general belief
about schizophreniawas that it was untreatable and that all patients with this disease needed to be
institutionalized. Although that could still be a viable option in isolated cases of extreme
psychosis, most patients nowadays use a combination of individual or group therapy and
pharmacological therapy to reduce and control their symptoms. As a result, these patients are able
to adapt and learn to live with this illness.
Schizophrenia is typically diagnosed during early adulthood or late adolescence. Each
schizophrenic patient will have a unique set of symptoms. Most patients with schizophrenia
gradually develop signs and symptoms over time, although it is also completely plausible for some
patients to have a sudden onset of symptoms. Typically, this illness starts out with a prodromal
period. During this period, people afflicted by this disease experience positive symptoms that may
include disturbances in their thought process, a difficulty differentiating between reality and
fantasy, and a substantial increase in instances of delusions and hallucinations. Negative symptoms
of schizophrenia may include social withdrawal, the inability to pay attention, and general

Lineage-Based Perspective
With there being more than 50,000 species of vertebrates alone it is essential for all biology
majors to have a working knowledge of the tree of life. The two perspectives for teaching zoology
are the Linnean taxonomical and the Phylogenetic clade based perspective. The Linnean
taxonomical perspective is a rank based hierarchy while the phylogenetic clade based perspective
groups speciesby focusing a common ancestor and its descendants. In regards to teaching zoology
there is more value in using the phylogenetic clade based perspective rather than the Linnean
perspective because it allows students to organize the details of biodiversitywith a more rational
system.
Phylogenetic taxonomy focuses on common ancestry and derived functional ... Show more content

For example; Coleoptera contains over three hundred thousand species while Primate contains
roughly four hundred species including the human (Ballen, Cissy J., and Harry W. Greene).
This lack of criteria is what causes the exclusion of taxonomic acknowledgment of major
evolutionary innovations while inaccurately portraying history. It is also mentioned in Greene s
more recent journal that the Linnean method fails at specifying clades based upon the origin of
limbs in tetrapods and shelled egg amniotes. While it also, obscures the fact that crocodilians are
more closely related to birds than they are to turtles, lizards, and snakes, which does not highlight
many dramatic similarities between earlier archosaurs (Ballen, Cissy J., and Harry W. Greene).
These two main concerns of omission and obscuration are why the phylogenetic clade based
system is a far more valuable and beneficial methodology for teaching zoology.
As it was mentioned previously, the phylogenetic clade based perspective only recognizes
monophyletic taxa, which are those taxa derived from a common ancestor not shared with any
other group. There is another argument being made that paraphyletic groups should not be included
as units of study within a zoology course. Paraphyletic and monophyletic units of study both have
their benefits and drawbacks however I believe that

have tried to reduce the length of time that patients stay in a hospital. Outpatient services have
gradually become an essential component of healthcare. Organizations that cannot make their
outpatient component cost effective are finding themselves financially burdened in this ever
changing industry (Caldwell, 2005).

As a result of this, when one patient takes longer to process, the Arrival Queue becomes a
bottleneck. Patients begin to stack up behind one another while they wait for the other patients to
be processed. This is point in the process that needs improvement. By fixing the time it takes to
process each patient and removing or reordering certain steps, the cycle time could be reduced and
the bottleneck eliminated.
Work Process Improvement
As stated earlier, the cost for health care is rising for both employers and employees; therefore,
both employers and employees are seeking for medical groups that provide systems of very well
coordinated care. Coordinating care creates significant advantages for patient by delivering high
quality care efficiently, so that patients get the most for their health care dollars. When services are
integrated and carefully designed across the stream of care, this thoughtfulness up front eliminates
duplication of processes and inappropriate services. Patients, employers and medical groups benefit
in terms of better health and streamlined costs associated with the care.
Survey after survey suggest that the biggest frustrations for patients are:
1.Appointment access
2.Phone Access
3.Getting information about their test results
4.Understanding how to use medical group systems (referrals, eligibility, business department, etc.)

The Role Of Conflicts In Japanese Political History
Japanese political history has been changed by succession disputes which resulted in wars that split
the families to rise or decline and shift power. Jinshin war (еЈ¬з”ігЃ®д№±) was the one of the

Lord of the Flies
There are many factors that decide/figure out how people conduct themselves in their daily
lives. From the day we are brought in this world we are ruled by a set of laws that have influenced
how we live. As children we are taught how to act by our parents and guardians, and as we
become adults, society keeps us peaceful, law obeying and productive with laws and order. In
William Golding s novel, Lords of The Flies the setting helps develop the theme by showing that
without the influence of a peaceful, law obeying and productive society, we can go back to our
primitive existence. Without law and order and a desire to preserve peace, violence will (in the
end) erupt as the need for power becomes greater.
In the novel, Lord of the Flies William Golding uses the setting to develop the theme by presenting
a situation without guidance can make people animal like. An example of (violent, animal like
behavior) is when Golding introduces a mentally sick kid , who had ... Show more content on

Comparing Emily Bronte s And Frankenstein
What does it mean when one describes a noble beast , and to what extent must a damaged
character wreak havoc for their actions to be deemed monstrous? How do we define a monster?
These questions are posed to readers of Frankenstein and Wuthering Heights, two novels tied by
threads of revenge and discrimination. Both stories are about created monsters and how they have
been wronged by those around them. Those monsters proceed to seek vengeance on the people who
have harmed them. Several parallels can be drawn between Heathcliffand Frankensteins monster,
although the circumstances and results of their warping differ, and these comparisons help one
determine whether their actions are justified or are impossible to redeem. Both characters have
been victims of abuse that they did not deserve. Frankenstein created a grotesque creature who was
still biologically human. His horrendous appearance got him maltreatment from those around him,
including getting scolded by his own creator for existing, a feat that Victor himself committed.
Heathcliff was also subject to discrimination, due to low social status and even racism from his
dark skin and questionable origin. Take my colt, gipsy, then! ...Hindley finished his speech by

Irish during the mid nineteenth century and how millions of Irish came to live in America (Purcell

to 1848, historians have pointed out that immigrating from Ireland was becoming more popular

NONACCEPTANCE IN AMERICA The Catholic Church and politics were very important to the
Irish Americans. The church in Ireland had been a bulwark of strength against English oppression.
When the Irish suffered the same hostility as the British to their religious beliefs, the church in
America became a source of spiritual comfort. French and native born priests controlled the
American Catholic church when the Irish arrived in large numbers, but the Irish quickly moved
up, becoming priests, nuns, and archbishops and leaders in the church. Archbishop John Hughes
of New York in the 1840s was the first of many Irish leaders in the Catholic Church. Politics and
religion helped the Irish overcome the bitter poverty they faced in the mid 1800s. As of 1980, the
nearly 20 million Irish Americans were more likely than other immigrants to be professionals and

The Sorrow of War Essay
The Sorrow of War
Bao Ninh s The Sorrow of War is a novel that is a personal view of the Vietnam War from the
perspective of a Vietnamese soldier. Like the American novel The things they carried , this novel
brings about the effects of war on people, and especially how it defeats the human capacity for
things such as love and hope. Bao Ninh offers this realistic picture of the Vietnam War s impact on
the individual Vietnamese soldier through use of a series of reminiscences or flashbacks, jumping
backwards and forwards in time between the events most salient in memory, events which take on a
different theme each time they are examined. His main protagonist Kien, who is basically Bao

Along with not seeing the bigger picture soldiers lost their ordinary lives due to the war and the
contrast was so different between pre and post war that it was hard to cope with life for the men
fighting in the war. For Kien, the most attractive, persistent echo of the past is the whisper of
ordinary life, even though the sounds of ordinary life have been washed away by the long
storms of war. It is the whispers of friends and ordinary people that are the most horrifying. (63)
The strongest emotions occur as the story unfolds and life takes over from childhood fantasies,
destroying individuals and their families as a whole society is remade for instance Kien s
sweetheart before the war. Kien abandons his lover and instead spends the next years plodding
through the jungle where everything dies. no jungle grew again in this clearing. No grass, no

ends he has a struggle to rebuild that was once loss, he can no longer see the good of things while
he slowly goes insane with out love and hope and of course no sweetheart to aid him. A very sad
and classical effect of a war that was worthless to its soldiers and people. The war had changed
people in so many ways, as their former character of being sincere, at peace, and loving was
slowly changed to chaotic, indecisive and unhopeful lives. People began to forget who they really

For example, I ve noticed that at the Montessori school where I did my work experience the
children interacted repeatedly with the environment by using the Montessori materials: Dressing

the child has been introduced to the Montessori materials he will learn as his nature dictates and
he will know how to do the Montessori activities without being in need of the directress. The
prepared environment has three components: one physical that is represented by the child sized
furniture and the Montessori materials, another intellectual created with the help of the directress
who designs the perfect climate for the child to work and develop himself and another one
spiritual offering the child patterns of spiritual behaviour through the genuine example given by
the directress.( I ve noticed at the Montessori school, in the pre school classroom that every time
the directress was praying before the snack time, the children took her example and did the
same). The directress is the one who plans the way in which the environment has to be prepared
for the children, according to the child s each activity and to the materials required for each
exercise; the things regarding the planning of the environment have to move from the directress to
the child: e.g. I ve seen at the Montessori School where I did my work experience that the

Marcus Brutus. Upon realizing his friend s part in his death, a shocked Caesar asks, Et tu, Brute?
[You too, Brutus?] and falls to his death. (Et tu, Brute?) The allegorical story Lord of The Flies
consists of many situations where the conflicts and betrayals between Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin
are represented through two boys on the island, Jack and Ralph. In the beginning of the story, Jack
and Ralph work together and have generally peaceful relations. However, as time goes on, tension
on the island increases, eventually resulting in the boys becoming leaders of two separate tribes.

Predatory Men in William Faulkner’s Novel, Sanctuary Essay
Predatory Men in William Faulkner s Novel, Sanctuary
William Faulkner s novel, Sanctuary, is replete with subtlety and symbolism. En route to Old
Frenchman s Place, Temple Drake thinks of baseball players in the Saturday game she is missing
as crouching, uttering short, yelping cries like marsh fowl disturbed by an alligator, not certain of
where the danger is, motionless, poised (37). In creating such an image of predation, Faulkner
prepares the reader for Temples arrival at Old Frenchman s Place the prey/predator metaphor
lending itself perfectly to Temple s situation vis Г vis the men there.

Popeye is characterized as unnatural, his features being likened to inanimate objects. He is
described as having that vicious depthless quality of stamped tin (4), his eyes are compared to
two knobs of soft black rubber (4), and his posture is described as making him resemble a
modernist lampstand (7). Popeye dislikes and fears nature, preferring to take the long way rather
than walk through the woods at night, and being frightened by owls and dogs (7, 19). His aversion
for nature underscores the threat his already menacing behavior poses to the vulnerable, animal like
Temple and to Tommy.
Tommy, who can walk through the sand with the ease of a mule (20) and when necessary...move
with that thick, lightning like celerity of badgers or coons (71), is, like Temple, described in terms
of nature and as having animal like characteristics. This similarity may explain her relative comfort
around him and her inclination to seek him at the dinner table (64). Despite his naturalness
however, Tommy is not necessarily an exception to Faulkner s characterization of the men in
Sanctuary as predatory. Tommy is seemingly concerned for Temple s well being, but his behavior
hints that there may be more to his concern for her than pure kindness. His body began to writhe
again in shocked indecision...his hands wringing slowly against his flanks...from time to time he

The Pine Is The Oldest Living Organism On The Planet
Growing in only six states the bristlecone pine is the oldest living organism on the planet. At
4,765 years old the Methuselah is the oldest documented living bristlecone there is, being almost
1,000 years older than its counterparts of the species. The age of this tree can be determined by
the amount of rings that are found when the inner truck is exposed. There is where the truth of the
extraordinary tree and its undeniable ability to outlive all other organisms lies. The bristlecone
having the ability to outlive all other organisms can be questioned but instead of asking how it
lives so long it should be questioned on the reasons for its lengthy pace to die.
The bristlecone pine is known to grow in the White Mountains of eastern California. In that area
conditions are not most desirable and ideal for plants to grow, however the bristlecone has
managed to withstand the harsh conditions and surpass the hands of time. The White Mountains
are an area that experiences short summers with a season for growing only being measured at
several weeks. These mountains also adhere to strong dry winds that travel against rocky souls.
These type of conditions cause any rain water that may fall to either drain off to fast for the plant to
absorb or the water to just evaporate (Matthews, M). With such harsh conditions it is amazing that
the bristlecone is still standing as the oldest living organism, unless it is because of these harsh
conditions that the tree has such longevity.

Rock And Roll Influence On Youth Culture
The discussion here will be of the invention of rock n roll and how did it emerge from the new
working class youth culture. Styles of this are said to be fused from black and white popular music.
All Genres have been studied for years but for rock itself was hard to get an agenda to just focus on
this as for some didn t considered if rock as form of musicwas as worthy to study than others.
The body of my essay will discuss the history of rock n roll and the popular youth cultures in the
last century and how their choice of music was developed.
No matter the genre, music in itself gives a person a sense of security. This is obvious at a young
age, where a child will keep themselves contempt and relaxed by singing to themselves and control
their emotions, where an adult doing their housework will sing to themselves to give freedom and
soul. This is shown through this essay that the youth culture brought other genre into their popular
music to explore more rhythm.
When you see Elvis Presley singing songs early in his career I think you [should] imagine, he is
channeling Rosetta Tharpe. It s not an image that I think we re used to thinking of in rock and roll
history. We don t think about the black woman behind the young white man.

Music today as we all know is an expression of feelings and thoughts in a combination of sounds

How Did George Orwell Influence Imperialism
Best distinguished by his cautionary novels on the rise of communism, George Orwell was
frequently influenced by his upbringing, careers, and experiences fighting fascism. Born Eric
Arthur Blair, George Orwell was born in British India to a family he would later famously
described as lower upper middle class . Academically inclined, he was able to obtain a scholarship
to St. Cyprian s, one of the best preparatory schools in England, although he often showed loathing
towards the strict policies and teachers at the school. However, in the later years of school his
academic interest slipped and with it his grades. With little options George Orwelljoined the Indian

In Shooting an Elephant, Orwell introduces the reality of a country, such as England, whose
expansionist doctrine results in the suppression and mistreatment of the native inhabitants in
their colonies. The short story is narrated by a British police officer stationed in Burma, a British
occupied territory. The story begins with an acknowledgement of the horrible conditions in
which the Burmese people live and the officer describes his own hatred towards Britain for
causing such a state, The wretched prisoners huddling in the stinking cages of the lock ups, the
grey, cowed faces of the long term convicts, the scarred buttocks of the men who had been
flogged with bamboos (Orwell). By having a British officer admit the flaws in Britain s imperial
system, Orwell is telling his readers that the system of imperialism is so cruel that even those
who reap the benefits of imperialism don t approve of it. Through this Orwell points out the
double sided nature of the imperial system, This paradox governs the of the men who serve the
system. Their power is based on conventional action. Loyalty cannot be demanded it has to be

The Rise Of Women In France Essay
The Rise of Women in French Society
During the Middle Ages, French society, along with the rest of Europe, revolved around the
warrior class. In order to gain land and power nobles gave their services in the military and lived
violent lifestyles. Treatment toward women during this period was harsh. quot;In a society of
landed nobility dispersed fairly loosely across the country in their castles and estates, the
likelihood of a preponderance of the man over the woman and thus of a more or less unconcealed
male dominance, is very great. quot; (Elias, Page 325.) Men beat their wives and typically had
little respect for them. Marriage was based not on love but on increase in influence and wealth. ...

The bourgeoisie had grown and taken power away from the warrior class of nobility. quot;Thereby
the equilibrium is slowly established which gives optimal power to one man, the central ruler. The
kings during this era created a luxurious palace court system that brought families and nobility
together in close proximity. Under the watchful eye of society, men were less prone to physical
violence and the importance of the woman grew. quot;Social life quot; began to grow and more
importance was placed upon literature and the fine arts, skills that women had long been schooled
in. In the past, it was the women and clergy who had been taught to read and write, as there had not
been much importance for it during the days of wars and political unrest. quot; For the master of the
court, his function as knight and military leader was still the primary one; his education too was
that of a warrior centered upon the wielding of arms. For just this reason the women surpassed
him in the sphere of peaceful society. quot; (Page 326 7.) At the end of the Middle Ages, women
became assets to their families. The battlefield for power had changed from bloodshed to skill. A
daughter who possessed great social graces could bring a family closer to the monarchy and insure
it s members a greater ranking in court life.
Emphasis began to be placed on beauty and love, an emotion virtually void in the warrior society.
Troubadour poetry and minnesang rose, creating a

Uses of Voice Over Internet Protocol
VOIP: Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) can be defined as a series of technologies and technique
that is used for release of voice communications and multimedia through Internet Protocol networks.
In some cases, this technique is referred to as a means of converting analog audio signals into
digital data that can be delivered through an InternetProtocol. The use of the technique is
attributed to its ability to transform standard Internet connection into a platform for free phone
calls. In the past few years, Voice over Internet Protocol has emerged as an innovative technology
with the capability of completely transforming phone systems across the globe. As a result, VoIP
providers have not only existed for a considerable period of time but are also growing steadily.
However, the use of VoIP to rework modern phone systems is characterized by several advantages
and disadvantages.
Use of VoIP: The use of Voice over Internet Protocol is primarily an intelligent re invention of the
wheel in the world s phone systems. Generally, this technique involves transmitting voice
information in digital format in distinct packets instead of using the conventional circuit committed
protocols of the public switched telephone network ( VoIP (voice over IP) , n.d.). This technique was
developed following initiatives by major equipment providers to enhance the use of standard
measures for transmitting voice and video using Internet Protocol within an intranet and across the

still had aspirations to become a doctor. She returns to school at Stanford to study medicine, after
fulfilling her degree she made her way back to New Mexico near Gallup.
Alvord Practiced at Gallup Indian Medical Center where she stood out from her peers. She realized
that all of her peers are Anglos and she was the only Native American. Although she is Native
American she is not seen as such from her Native American Patients because of her modern medical
practices. Alvord felt conflicted for her Native American background by practicing western
medicine. She realizes that trust is the most difficult aspect when having Native American patients.
Since the doctors are mostly Anglos it is difficult to communicate to the Navajo patients. Alvord
realized this conflict and bridged the patient physician gap by speaking Navajo and touching the

Bayou Research Paper
Bayou Many places make people happy and make them feel relaxed. One place makes me that
way. My favorite place to be is on Bayou Bartholomew. I live on Bayou Bartholomew in
Sterlington, Louisiana. It used to be part of the running bayou. The part that I live on was cut
off with levees years ago from the other part for flood control, and it is thirteen miles long. The
colors of the bayou water vary. Sometimes the water is clear, and sometimes it is cloudy. It just
depends on the time of year. Also, just looking at it, the channel in the middle is very dark
compared to the shallow water by the bank. One of my favorite places on the bayou is The
Island. It is right by my house. It is a large cluster of majestic cypress trees. If I sit quietly enough
in the boat and don t move, I can hear frogs croaking and mosquitoes buzzing. Most of the time a
turtle, bass, gar, alligator, and/or beaver will splash. The splashes catch me off guard and scare me
sometimes. Right now, there is mill foil inside the island. This is a green grass that fishlove, but I

Other people ski and tube, but I don t. I have seen what s in the water! I like the challenge of
fishing in the bayou. It contains largemouth bass, small mouth bass, catfish, grass carp, different
species of gar, blue gill, bream, and white perch. It s challenging because, first, I have to decide
what I want to fish for. What I am fishing for determines how and where I fish. If I want to fish
for bass, which I like to do mostly, I fish down the banks. Bass usually hang out near stumps and
trees. If I want to fish for bream, I go to shallow areas near clusters of trees. Catfish are fun to
fish for because I can tight line from my house. I set up a pole and cast it into the channel and just
wait right in my back yard. I never run out things to fish for in the

Summary Of Will Allen s The Good Food Revolution
Will Allen s The Good Food Revolution: Growing Healthy Food, People, and Communities is
not just a book about agriculture, it s about life. The book is Will Allen s diary about his past,
present and future. This book is an inspiration. Will Allen writes to show us that our past, might
always come back to haunt us, but the second time it can be a positive experience based on our
efforts. In the following I will provide a summary of the book, describe the importance of the book,
and lastly I will provide a critique on Will Allen s, The Good FoodRevolution: Growing Healthy
Food, People, and Communities. As an African American, Allen has not only suffer from racism,
but also from the unfairness in the world of food. He explains how his parents were slaves back in
1920s, and how that caused him to have a negative view towards agriculture. He states that he never
enjoyed farming during that time. He had always had a passion for agriculture, but there was
always something negative in this path that kept him from enjoying it. Will Allen s love for
agriculture, became the reason why he desired to start his organization, Growing Power. His
organization does not earn profits by harming the poor, it hopes to create an alternative to the
nation s centralized industrial food system. His origination teaches people how to grow food, cook
food, and embrace a way of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Analysis Of Sal Castro And Maria Tula s Hear My Testimony
Blowout!, by Sal Castro and Maria Tula s Hear my Testimony are both testimonios, meaning that
they are told in the first person narrative. They provide an accurate representation of the attitude
and ideology of not only their own, but others at that time period as well. In both books, the
testimonio helped tell a fuller story because it provided a deeper first hand view of socially
significant scenes and demonstrated, through their own voice, first hand how characters identities
were developed. These individuals were transformed because they faced realizations of larger
political pictures. Cesar Chavez was a civil rights activist who organized the earliest Chicano

He explains an encounter where a teacher told him, Sit in the encounter until you learn English
(Garcia Castro, Blowout! pg32). This quote shows that even in the first grade Castro realized
that racism was alive and present, and it was wrong. He believed that it was wrong for the school
to be treating him a certain way (badly), simply because of his culture. Through the testimonio,
these early encounters show us how Castro s identity and core values were shaped. Furthermore,
Castro s testimonio allows him to tell a fuller story of social activism. For example, Castro vividly
recalls the Watts Riot that took place in Los Angeles. The Watts Riot was the result of the
community reacting to allegations of police brutality against an African American motorcyclist.
Castros explains, If you lived or worked anywhere near Watts, located south of the downtown area,
you saw and smelled the smoke from the burning cars and buildings. (Garcia Castro, Blowout!
pg131). This demonstrates how the testimonio gave us a different view of social activism that was
occurring during the time period. It is portrayed to us through a personal response of someone who
experience it first hand. As the Blowouts progressed the Chicano students attitudes changed. A
student explains after the movement, were the first time that we began to develop

The Invisible Hand Is Make Up By Adam Smith
CHAPTER# 1
QUESTION FOR REVIEW:
6.) The term invisible hand is make up by Adam Smith in wealth of nation, to describe the
change in nature of marketplace without any interference of government, and it refers to
maintain the equilibrium of supply and demand. Like we all driving, and we stop at red lights
and go at green lights. Does anybody think, why we do so even there was nobody to stop us?
You know we just obey rules and regulations for avoiding the accident. We desire to stop and go,
for better future and to avoid dangerous accident. This is a good example of invisible hand.

The Tragical History Of Doctor Faustus
The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus, or Doctor Faustus, is a tragedy, written by Christopher
Marlowe, which conveys the heavy use of symbolism and allusions to illustrate the conflict
between good and evil during a time of rebirth in England. This play was first performed sometime
between 1588 and 1593, and published sometime in the early 1600s and is based on the protagonist,
Faustus, who originates from a classic oral German legend. Doctor Faustus is one of the first of
many publications that center on the character that is Faust. Doctor Faustus tells the story of a man
who has made a deal with the devil in order to gain unlimited knowledge, which in turn, guides him
down a path of damnation and a constant struggle between right and wrong. The decisions that the
titular character makes throughout the story are presented through an overall theme of the English
Renaissance, along with symbolism and allegories that accompany the good and evil angels, as
well as the seven deadly sins. Marlowe wrote Doctor Faustus during the English Renaissance, and
much of what goes on throughout the play exemplifies the transition from the old medieval lifestyle
to the new, modern lifestyle. The Renaissance brought forth a flourishing amount of opportunities
in education and other social aspects and made it possible for people to rise up through society by
working hard and by having ambition. Faustus heavily embodies many of the changes in principle
that went on in the

Black Convict Response To Claude Brown
My thoughts on the young black convict response to Claude Brown is that it is very sad and
disturbing because there are so many minorities with this outlook on life. I think that it is very
unfortunate that we as blacks allow our circumstances to make us think that criminal activity is the
only way to have a better life. I think that we have become so a custom to the disadvantages that we
don t think there is a better life outside of criminal activity. Although, many African Americans are
living in impoverished neighborhoods and have other disadvantages, I still think that there should
be some type of motivation within our ethnic group to want to do better and accomplish more out
of life. According to the course text, the reason that some

The Effect Of Fructose On The Aging Process
indefinitely on long lived molecules such as collagen and DNA. Evidence suggests that these
AGE molecules play a role in the aging process. The Maillard process is dependent on the
reactivity of the sugar involved. Fructose is much more reactive than glucose. In vivo, the rate of
non enzymatic glycosylation of haemoglobin was 7.5 greater, and the rate of protein cross linking
(a marker of aging) was 10 times greater, in the presence of fructosethan in the presence of glucose.
Therefore, it is safe to conclude that fructose has a much greater implication in the aging process
than glucose, taking the glycosylation of haemoglobin as an assay for this. [1]
As a reducing sugar, fructose reacts with protein molecules to form toxic advanced glycation end
products (AGEs) to a much greater extent than other sugars, which appears to contribute not only to
the aging process but also play a role in the pathogenesis of diabetic complications in diabetic
patients such as nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy and others. Supplementing the diet of
healthy male volunteers with 3g of fructose per kg of body weight per day resulted in insulin
resistance developing in as little as six days. A study carried out in non diabetic rats fed a diet
containing 68% carbohydrate, provided as fructose, shows that almost all retinas from the rats
showed pathologic changes that were histologically indistinguishable from diabetic retinopathy. [1]

Problems Within Epistemology A New Approach Essay
Fred Dretske (2005) rejects the claim that closure holds over known entailment. Dretske argues that
propositions, P, have heavyweight implications, Q, which cannot be known by the same reasons
that P is known by; and that if Closure holds this leads to scepticism. However, Dretske argues that
we can rule out closure by acknowledging that relevant alternatives for P are distinct and separate
from those for Q. Thus closure fails and scepticism is avoided. Intuitively I find myself agreeing
with Dretske, but think that this intuition itself is part of the larger problem within epistemology.
Using ideas from Nagel et al, I contend that the analytic approach to the problems of closure and
knowledgeitself is potentially limited; that gaps between thought modes can explain cases of
apparent loss of knowledge as exposed by Dretske. Moreover, that if we want to further success
regarding problems within epistemology a new approach may be needed. I suggest we look toward
the rational sciences, and towards a form of experimental epistemology.
It s commonly thought and reasonable to expect that if we know that a given proposition is true,
that we can thereby deduce and know what is subsequent to it, its implications, are true also. If this
is the case, knowledge would appear to be closed under known entailment, otherwise known as the
Closure principle.
Closure Principle: if, while knowing P, S believes Q because S knows that P entails Q, then S
knows Q (Luper 2016).
However,

Narrative Essay About My Love Geklont
My Love Geklont Fluidly he speaks as words flow gently out of his mouth like crashing waves.
Of course! How could I not consider the intense passion our relationship exerts? Last week he
was pursuing his college life with nothing to propel him forward, when out of the blue an
overwhelming love appears. It would only be fair that he was given some time to inhale the
emotional roller coaster we experienced on our first date. In a short amount of time, the
excitement that pulsed through my veins caused my soul to tangle with his. One week was all
it took to fall head over heels for a guy I had just met. His undeniable honesty about his true
feelings explains why he didn t feel good enough emotionally to trek to the movies yesterday.
Although it s hard for my jittering body to detach from the warm feeling he provides me with, I
understand that he is unable to call or text me while in recovery. * This is the perfect way to
satisfy my needs temporarily while he s gone. Logan will be at football practice for at least
another hour. Plenty of time to stop by for a quick in and out. I m sure he won t mind because
we ll soon be spending our lives together and I ll see his personal items then always, right? After
gathering my supplies I park about a half a mile from his house and casually skip down the street.
Once I make my way through the window, I slip on my worn out, light yellow grubby plastic
gloves. Casually strolling into the kitchen, I pry open the fridge and the intense

Making An Initial Visit After Receiving A Referral Within...
Summary The aim of this session was to introduce us to the process of making an initial visit
after receiving a referral within the role of a social worker. This was done with a small group
exercise involving role play. We were placed into groups of four and once in our groups we had
to divide ourselves into roles. There were three roles consisting of Service user, Social worker
and observer. We were then taken to one side with people from other groups whom had be given
the same role as ourselves and briefed on what it was we had to do. I was given the role of social
worker, therefore i was told that I had to plan and undertake an initial visit and given the receipt
of a referral. The referral consisted of concerns regarding a young boy, Max aged 2. The referral
was made by the child s nursery. They had concerns about his behavior and presentation, for
example, Max is often very tired, wears the same clothes for a number of consecutive days, is
greedy when given food and aggressive towards his peers. Alongside this, questions regarding
his mother, sally, were also raised. When staff at the nursery had spoken to her she seemed to
show littler concern regarding her son s behavior, she often smells strongly of alcohol and bruises
have been seen on her face. It was therefore my responsibility to take this information from this
receipt of referral on board before then undertaking my role within the role play of a social worker
making an initial visit. Initial Response As is

  • 2. Whole Food Failure Due to new entrants in the competitions for natural and organic food, companies take on adjustment strategies in order to satisfy the increase in demand and supply and maximize profit. In 2015, Whole foods failed to satisfy the companies projection of 6% growth and due to selling, general and administrative expenses suffered a fall in its net profit by 56% compared to 2014 fourth quarter (Bells, 2015). The downfall was mainly caused by increase in total cost due to operational expenses rose from ~29% in Q4 2014 to ~32% of the total revenue in Q4 2015 (Belle, 2015). In 2016 the company takes on newly developed strategies in order to lower the cost of production and expense and raise its gross margin percentage, which also dropped in Q4 2014 by almost one whole point to 34.5% (Bells, 2015). Walmart still holds the biggest market share in the retail field but also entered the organic food market pretty easily by offering natural and organic products at its lowest price guarantee and price match techniques. The four firm concentration ratio for the market is at high 87.7% making its bold statement about the big players in the market and the oligopoly industry (Statista, n.d.). It is a difficult task for stores like Albertsons to enter the organic food market due to the influence and unbeatable prices majority of the competitors offer. Since the organic products salesare in no way a new innovation or something we have not seen before a fair opportunity is given to anyone guaranteeing good quality and prices. However, a big brand like Whole Foods controls a big portion of the organic food market and therefor its is unlikely for a new developing store to survive on it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Striped Pajamas By John Boyne Most people view the Holocaust as one of the worst things that has ever happened in human history. It s very difficult to argue this belief. Not only were millions of people killed in battle, but millions were killed outside of battle. After his murder of over six million Jews, Adolf Hitler became regarded as one of the most hated and evil people in the world, and still is today. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a novel based on this time period. Written in 2006 by an Irish author named John Boyne, it is about a boy named Bruno who is nine years old growing up in Germany during the second World War. Even though it is written by an Irish author and not a German one, it is well known for depicting just how bad the Nazi concentration camps ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lastly, the Literary Analysis will analyze the main point of this essay: despite there being dozens of themes in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, it is clear that the main ones are friendship, human nature, and innocence. Cultural and Historical Context John Boyne was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1971, and studied English Literature at Trinity College, Dublin, and creative writing at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, where he was awarded the Curtis Brown prize (Boyne, Web). • 4. Psychological Hypnosis Throughout many year, hypnosis has evolved using a variety of techniques. Most of the techniques were commonly used to perform clinical methods and principles. Psychologists had discovered the aristocracy and medical theories of hypnosis by introducing it into the course for curing psychiatric and physical illnesses. As the phenomena transforms throughout centuries, the origin of its term follows. Medical doctors in France have embraced the new term hypnotism by the late 1800s, although they had originally used the term mesmerism for the symptoms (Upshaw, 2006). However, mass changes of techniques, clinical methods, and principles have been made as many practitioners decline the opportunity to further enhance their knowledge and devote... The correlation towards this statement is the explanation that practitioners refrain from looking into the theoretical understanding that psychological hypnosis is nothing other than a natural process, which in this case, is often perceived to be impossible for students to learn and to demonstrate the psychological changes thoroughly in order to practice and engage the skilful needs to interpret a hypnotist. The first half of the 20th century ingrained hypnosis in the public perception as a form of mind control, and the tool of spiritual seekers looking for past lives (Upshaw, 2006). Oftentimes, surgeons would use hypnosis as a form of surgical anaesthetics to alter the patient into the desired trance. This frequent treatment occurred without the use of medicinal anaesthesia by clinicians to relieve the pain before undergoing a surgical procedure. Along the previous years, the theory of hypnosis has made drastic changes in prospect, however the potential outcome on whether hypnosis should be treated in a negative way, or positive way varies over farther ... • 5. Voltaire s View Of Candide Voltaire s Candide is a satirical work written in 1759 as a commentary during the Enlightenment. One of Voltaire s most famous works, it also functioned to reflect Voltaire s opinions. Candide is considered Voltaire s signature work in which he levels his sharpest criticism against nobility, philosophy, the church, and human cruelty. Though often considered a representative text of the Enlightenment era, the novel criticizes a number of Enlightenment philosophies. As reading and books were a sign of wealth in that time, the trend among nobility was reading. The criticisms and ridicule within the satirical nature of Candidehad much to do with the nobility and their standards and ideas, especially in contrast with those of the lower classes. Through the form and technique of satire in Candide, Voltairesuggests the absurdity of societal principles and theories. Throughout the novel, Candide s teacher and philosopher, Pangloss, persists in his paternalistic optimism theory. He continually expresses his belief that this world is the best of all possible worlds and that everything happens and exists for a reason. One example is after the earthquake in Lisbon, killing 30,000 people, Pangloss comments, For, said he, all that is for the best. If there is a volcano at Lisbon it cannot be elsewhere. It is impossible that things should be other than they are; for everything is right (5.14). Pangloss insists that the volcano was made for the exact purpose of the earthquake ... • 6. Nuclear Waste Disposal Essay example Nuclear Waste Disposal As the millenium approaches, we are faced with the problems created by our technological advances. Everyday we are forced to see the results, from acid rain to polluted beaches. But there is one problem in particular that will probably out live our generation and the generation which has created it. If properly contained and monitored, it has little affect on us and our environment. However, once it is free of it s containment, it is a destructive and deadly force. This problem is nuclear waste. Thirty thousand metric tons of spent fuel rods from power reactors and another 380,000 cubic meters of high level radioactive waste, have been produced in the United States since the beginning of the nuclear age. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In a nuclear reactor of a nuclear power plant, the fission process is contained within the zirconium or magnesium cladding that surrounds the fuel rods. The fuel rods are spent after the fission takes place. They are highly radioactive and give off dangerous gamma radiation, which is similar to X ray and can therefore penetrate through a human body. It is necessary to shield the spent fuel rods with water and thick lead walls (Bertell, 1985). These fuel rods and their contents, are essentially what comprises nuclear waste and is what needs to be kept secure for hundreds of thousands of years. Two types of radiation There are two types of radiation; particle and penetrating. Penetrating radiation or gamma radiation, can pass through human tissue and damages cell functions. After about 500 years, gamma radiation in nuclear fuel waste drops to low enough levels that it poses no real threat to humans (AECB, 1992). Particle radiation includes alphan and beta radiation. This type of radiation is given off by the longer lived radioactive substances. This means that the substances remain hazardous for many thousands of years. Neither these types can penetrate human tissue. However, they can affect cell function and therefore cause cancer if the radioactive substance has been ingested or inhaled ... • 10. The Rights Of Freedom Of Speech The Founders made the press a First Amendment priority in the United States Constitution as a protected role to act as a check on elected officials. The press was part of the Constitutional checks and balances in holding elected officials accountable and to be observant for exploitation, as the press were in essence the eyes and ears of the people. Freedom of the press is the irrefutable privilege to propagate opinions in print without censorship by the government. Because I was in the back of the class, I got my grade last. The time it took the teacher to arrive to the last row felt like the waiting line at the airport; the time just stopped. My minddrifted while I thoughtabout what I got on the test. I had studied hard for that test, but I was not sure if I performed well enough for a high grade. My test sliding onto my table snapped me back to reality. When I looked at it, I felt relieved. Written in red stood 98 /100, but when I saw the comment beside, my smile left my face. He had commented one word: Fine. I could not understand why. Was he not pleased with me? I have always thought that fine meant, you did all right, just okay, or not too bad. After class, I approached the teacher and asked him why he was not pleased with my grade. He looked at me, surprised, and said, What do you mean? I was really glad with your grade... Mainstream music has been given a negative connotation due to the supposed lack of originality of the artists. Repetitive chord progressions and meaningless lyrics compose the majority of mainstream music, making each song sound like the next . Despite these patterns in music, artists still ventured outside of what was societally normal and created music that was unheard of. Despite the potential risks in being an individual in the music industry, several groups achieved high success and maintain the popularity in the present. Creativity and commercial success can definitely exist alongside one another, and this paper will prove that through the music of the Beatles, the performance styles of David Bowie, and the grunge movement in Seattle which was fueled by Nirvana. The Beatles started as an English skiffle group in the late 1950s. By the time they reached their peak popularity, the term Beatlemania was coined to explain the frenzied obsession with the group. A former associate editor from Rolling Stone drew a comparison between the Beatles and Picasso, calling them artists that broke through their time period to come up with something that was unique and original. Throughout their discography, the Beatles have time and time again released music that both broke musical trends and engrossed the masses. They have held an unprecedented top five spots on the ... • 13. Analysis Of The Certainty Of Fools By Daniel Kahneman Fear of Uncertainty Voltaire once said, Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is an absurd one. We live in a world that is constantly changing and does not grant the certainty that people desire. But, people want the stability of knowing what is going to happen; this is why certainty is absurd. In his essay The Surety of Fools, Daniel Kahneman provides examples of people using a phenomenon he calls the illusion of validity. These people strongly believe their actions cause a specific outcome, when in reality there is statistical evidence that shows their actions have no direct correlation with the outcome. While Kahneman argues the illusion of validity comes partially from people s tendency to make quick decisions without fully conveying the causes, it really stems from people s fear of uncertainty. The fear of uncertainty is deeply engrained within our society in academia and in our decision making. Kahneman argues that the illusion of validity comes from fast thinking because it is prone to doubt. However, he neglects to mention that fast thinking roots itself in the fear of uncertainty. Kahneman begins his essay by describing his experience in evaluating future soldier s ability in order to predict what kind of leader they may be. The researchers put the soldiers in a high pressure environment and judged the soldiers on their actions in a given situation. For example, one test involved eight men, complete strangers to one another, on an obstacle field and their goal was to haul a log over a six foot wall. The researchers took note of who took charge, who was stubborn and how the soldiers interacted with each other. Using those observations, the researchers made predictions of what kind of leaders they believed each soldier would become. However, follow up sessions with the soldiers showed that the soldiers may have been overshadowed by another soldier, just having a bad day or were more outgoing than normal during the challenge. So, the follow up sessions statistically proved that Kahneman s predictions were not accurate enough to be helpful. As Kahneman put it, Our forecasts were better than blind guesses, but not by much. So, the research and observations, while they seemed to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Schizophrenia is a disease process that is characterized by periods of irrational behavior, emotional changes, and distorted views of reality. According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, this illness affects about one percent of the population. In the past, the general belief about schizophreniawas that it was untreatable and that all patients with this disease needed to be institutionalized. Although that could still be a viable option in isolated cases of extreme psychosis, most patients nowadays use a combination of individual or group therapy and pharmacological therapy to reduce and control their symptoms. As a result, these patients are able to adapt and learn to live with this illness. Schizophrenia is typically diagnosed during early adulthood or late adolescence. Each schizophrenic patient will have a unique set of symptoms. Most patients with schizophrenia gradually develop signs and symptoms over time, although it is also completely plausible for some patients to have a sudden onset of symptoms. Typically, this illness starts out with a prodromal period. During this period, people afflicted by this disease experience positive symptoms that may include disturbances in their thought process, a difficulty differentiating between reality and fantasy, and a substantial increase in instances of delusions and hallucinations. It is also mentioned in Greene s more recent journal that the Linnean method fails at specifying clades based upon the origin of limbs in tetrapods and shelled egg amniotes. While it also, obscures the fact that crocodilians are more closely related to birds than they are to turtles, lizards, and snakes, which does not highlight many dramatic similarities between earlier archosaurs (Ballen, Cissy J., and Harry W. Greene). These two main concerns of omission and obscuration are why the phylogenetic clade based system is a far more valuable and beneficial methodology for teaching zoology. As it was mentioned previously, the phylogenetic clade based perspective only recognizes monophyletic taxa, which are those taxa derived from a common ancestor not shared with any other group. There is another argument being made that paraphyletic groups should not be included as units of study within a zoology course. From the day we are brought in this world we are ruled by a set of laws that have influenced how we live. As children we are taught how to act by our parents and guardians, and as we become adults, society keeps us peaceful, law obeying and productive with laws and order. The importance of the main ingredients of the Montessori method : the directress and the prepared environment Motto: The teacher as an adult should try to interpret the child s needs and meet them as best as he can by preparing a really suitable environment. This may be the beginning of a new epoch in education, which will consider how it can assist the life of the child. (Montessori, M., The Secret of Childhood, Part1, Chapter IV: Where adults impede the question of sleep, 1963, p.79). The child in the Montessori school needs the best conditions for his development and for achieving this, he needs a link between him and the knowledge to come: this link could be represented by the directress who connects the child to the surrounding... For example, I ve noticed that at the Montessori school where I did my work experience the children interacted repeatedly with the environment by using the Montessori materials: Dressing frames or Pink Tower and this interaction lasted longer than the directress child one, because once the child has been introduced to the Montessori materials he will learn as his nature dictates and he will know how to do the Montessori activities without being in need of the directress. The prepared environment has three components: one physical that is represented by the child sized furniture and the Montessori materials, another intellectual created with the help of the directress who designs the perfect climate for the child to work and develop himself and another one spiritual offering the child patterns of spiritual behaviour through the genuine example given by the directress.( I ve noticed at the Montessori school, in the pre school classroom that every time the directress was praying before the snack time, the children took her example and did the same). The directress is the one who plans the way in which the environment has to be prepared for the children, according to the child s each activity and to the materials required for each exercise; the things regarding the planning of the environment have to move from the directress to the child: e.g. I ve seen at the Montessori School where I did my work experience that the directress provided good quality and easy ... • 30. Lord Of The Flies By William Shakespeare Perhaps one of the most famous betrayals in history was that of Julius Caesar by his friend Marcus Brutus. Upon realizing his friend s part in his death, a shocked Caesar asks, Et tu, Brute? [You too, Brutus?] and falls to his death. (Et tu, Brute?) The allegorical story Lord of The Flies consists of many situations where the conflicts and betrayals between Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin are represented through two boys on the island, Jack and Ralph. In the beginning of the story, Jack and Ralph work together and have generally peaceful relations. However, as time goes on, tension on the island increases, eventually resulting in the boys becoming leaders of two separate tribes. Finally, Jack violates the previously agreed upon peace... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The boys are forced to survive on a deserted island with no adults. Initially, the boys get along well. Jack and Ralph are two of the older boys, both headstrong in two separate ways. Ralph has a desire to keep order on the island whilst Jack is hungry for power. Ralph is quickly realized as the best fit for a leader and elected chief, but makes sure to give Jack an important role as well after noticing his jealousy. Ralph says of Jack, Jack s in charge of the choir. They can be what do you want them to be? Jack responds with Hunters, and Jack and Ralph smiled at each other with a shy liking (Golding 23). Ralph gives Jack this job more so to avoid conflict than to have any type of second in command on the island. This is largely a political move, just as the Nazi Soviet Non Aggression Pact was. In the eyes of Stalin, who is compared to Ralph, the pact to keep peace largely benefited him. Stalin was given time to build up the Soviet military while keeping his nation on peaceful terms with Germany (German Soviet Nonaggression Pact), and Jack was given a job by Ralph to avoid conflict. After asking myself these series of questions, it is almost as if God spoke aloud to me. You are very Judge mental it is ugly and not of God. I said well there it is. The practice that works well for me, is the practicing Silence. I love this, I find that God can deal with me better in silence. I can hear what God is saying and what God wants me to do. In my life s journey, I find that practicing silence is what got me where God wants me to be. In doing this God pours directly in to me, his divine plan. • 32. Predatory Men in William Faulkner’s Novel, Sanctuary Essay Predatory Men in William Faulkner s Novel, Sanctuary William Faulkner s novel, Sanctuary, is replete with subtlety and symbolism. En route to Old Frenchman s Place, Temple Drake thinks of baseball players in the Saturday game she is missing as crouching, uttering short, yelping cries like marsh fowl disturbed by an alligator, not certain of where the danger is, motionless, poised (37). In creating such an image of predation, Faulkner prepares the reader for Temples arrival at Old Frenchman s Place the prey/predator metaphor lending itself perfectly to Temple s situation vis Г vis the men there. He is described as having that vicious depthless quality of stamped tin (4), his eyes are compared to two knobs of soft black rubber (4), and his posture is described as making him resemble a modernist lampstand (7). Popeye dislikes and fears nature, preferring to take the long way rather than walk through the woods at night, and being frightened by owls and dogs (7, 19). His aversion for nature underscores the threat his already menacing behavior poses to the vulnerable, animal like Temple and to Tommy. Tommy, who can walk through the sand with the ease of a mule (20) and when necessary...move with that thick, lightning like celerity of badgers or coons (71), is, like Temple, described in terms of nature and as having animal like characteristics. This similarity may explain her relative comfort around him and her inclination to seek him at the dinner table (64). Despite his naturalness however, Tommy is not necessarily an exception to Faulkner s characterization of the men in Sanctuary as predatory. At 4,765 years old the Methuselah is the oldest documented living bristlecone there is, being almost 1,000 years older than its counterparts of the species. The age of this tree can be determined by the amount of rings that are found when the inner truck is exposed. There is where the truth of the extraordinary tree and its undeniable ability to outlive all other organisms lies. The bristlecone having the ability to outlive all other organisms can be questioned but instead of asking how it lives so long it should be questioned on the reasons for its lengthy pace to die. The bristlecone pine is known to grow in the White Mountains of eastern California. In that area conditions are not most desirable and ideal for plants to grow, however the bristlecone has managed to withstand the harsh conditions and surpass the hands of time. The White Mountains are an area that experiences short summers with a season for growing only being measured at several weeks. These mountains also adhere to strong dry winds that travel against rocky souls. These type of conditions cause any rain water that may fall to either drain off to fast for the plant to absorb or the water to just evaporate (Matthews, M). With such harsh conditions it is amazing that the bristlecone is still standing as the oldest living organism, unless it is because of these harsh conditions that the tree has such longevity. The body of my essay will discuss the history of rock n roll and the popular youth cultures in the last century and how their choice of music was developed. This is obvious at a young age, where a child will keep themselves contempt and relaxed by singing to themselves and control their emotions, where an adult doing their housework will sing to themselves to give freedom and soul. In Shooting an Elephant, Orwell introduces the reality of a country, such as England, whose expansionist doctrine results in the suppression and mistreatment of the native inhabitants in their colonies. The short story is narrated by a British police officer stationed in Burma, a British occupied territory. The story begins with an acknowledgement of the horrible conditions in which the Burmese people live and the officer describes his own hatred towards Britain for causing such a state, The wretched prisoners huddling in the stinking cages of the lock ups, the grey, cowed faces of the long term convicts, the scarred buttocks of the men who had been flogged with bamboos (Orwell). By having a British officer admit the flaws in Britain s imperial system, Orwell is telling his readers that the system of imperialism is so cruel that even those who reap the benefits of imperialism don t approve of it. Through this Orwell points out the double sided nature of the imperial system, This paradox governs the of the men who serve the system. Their power is based on conventional action. The Tragical History Of Doctor Faustus The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus, or Doctor Faustus, is a tragedy, written by Christopher Marlowe, which conveys the heavy use of symbolism and allusions to illustrate the conflict between good and evil during a time of rebirth in England. This play was first performed sometime between 1588 and 1593, and published sometime in the early 1600s and is based on the protagonist, Faustus, who originates from a classic oral German legend. Doctor Faustus is one of the first of many publications that center on the character that is Faust. Doctor Faustus tells the story of a man who has made a deal with the devil in order to gain unlimited knowledge, which in turn, guides him down a path of damnation and a constant struggle between right and wrong. The decisions that the titular character makes throughout the story are presented through an overall theme of the English Renaissance, along with symbolism and allegories that accompany the good and evil angels, as well as the seven deadly sins. Marlowe wrote Doctor Faustus during the English Renaissance, and much of what goes on throughout the play exemplifies the transition from the old medieval lifestyle to the new, modern lifestyle. • 47. The Effect Of Fructose On The Aging Process indefinitely on long lived molecules such as collagen and DNA. Evidence suggests that these AGE molecules play a role in the aging process. The Maillard process is dependent on the reactivity of the sugar involved. Fructose is much more reactive than glucose. In vivo, the rate of non enzymatic glycosylation of haemoglobin was 7.5 greater, and the rate of protein cross linking (a marker of aging) was 10 times greater, in the presence of fructosethan in the presence of glucose. Therefore, it is safe to conclude that fructose has a much greater implication in the aging process than glucose, taking the glycosylation of haemoglobin as an assay for this. [1] As a reducing sugar, fructose reacts with protein molecules to form toxic advanced glycation end products (AGEs) to a much greater extent than other sugars, which appears to contribute not only to the aging process but also play a role in the pathogenesis of diabetic complications in diabetic patients such as nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy and others. Supplementing the diet of healthy male volunteers with 3g of fructose per kg of body weight per day resulted in insulin resistance developing in as little as six days. A study carried out in non diabetic rats fed a diet containing 68% carbohydrate, provided as fructose, shows that almost all retinas from the rats showed pathologic changes that were histologically indistinguishable from diabetic retinopathy. • 49. Problems Within Epistemology A New Approach Essay Fred Dretske (2005) rejects the claim that closure holds over known entailment. Dretske argues that propositions, P, have heavyweight implications, Q, which cannot be known by the same reasons that P is known by; and that if Closure holds this leads to scepticism. However, Dretske argues that we can rule out closure by acknowledging that relevant alternatives for P are distinct and separate from those for Q. Thus closure fails and scepticism is avoided. Intuitively I find myself agreeing with Dretske, but think that this intuition itself is part of the larger problem within epistemology. Using ideas from Nagel et al, I contend that the analytic approach to the problems of closure and knowledgeitself is potentially limited; that gaps between thought modes can explain cases of apparent loss of knowledge as exposed by Dretske. Moreover, that if we want to further success regarding problems within epistemology a new approach may be needed. I suggest we look toward the rational sciences, and towards a form of experimental epistemology. It s commonly thought and reasonable to expect that if we know that a given proposition is true, that we can thereby deduce and know what is subsequent to it, its implications, are true also. If this is the case, knowledge would appear to be closed under known entailment, otherwise known as the Closure principle. Closure Principle: if, while knowing P, S believes Q because S knows that P entails Q, then S knows Q (Luper 2016). However, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How could I not consider the intense passion our relationship exerts? Last week he was pursuing his college life with nothing to propel him forward, when out of the blue an overwhelming love appears. It would only be fair that he was given some time to inhale the emotional roller coaster we experienced on our first date. In a short amount of time, the excitement that pulsed through my veins caused my soul to tangle with his. One week was all it took to fall head over heels for a guy I had just met. His undeniable honesty about his true feelings explains why he didn t feel good enough emotionally to trek to the movies yesterday. Although it s hard for my jittering body to detach from the warm feeling he provides me with, I understand that he is unable to call or text me while in recovery. * This is the perfect way to satisfy my needs temporarily while he s gone. Logan will be at football practice for at least another hour. Plenty of time to stop by for a quick in and out. I m sure he won t mind because we ll soon be spending our lives together and I ll see his personal items then always, right? After gathering my supplies I park about a half a mile from his house and casually skip down the street. Once I make my way through the window, I slip on my worn out, light yellow grubby plastic gloves. Casually strolling into the kitchen, I pry open the fridge and the intense ... Economy weak, Lasco strong Producing for local consumption is challenging given the weak economic background. The economy eked out a growth rate of 1.5% for Q1 March 2011, after 3 years of contraction. It means consumers spending power is still lukewarm as the growth rate was not enough to make a meaningful dent on the unemployment rate. Fortunately for Lasco, their products are positioned at the lower end of the spectrum, which allowed them to benefit from a shift in consumer spending habits. On the flip side, a recovery in the economy could see consumers shifting away from Lasco products. • 53. Making An Initial Visit After Receiving A Referral Within... Summary The aim of this session was to introduce us to the process of making an initial visit after receiving a referral within the role of a social worker. This was done with a small group exercise involving role play. We were placed into groups of four and once in our groups we had to divide ourselves into roles. There were three roles consisting of Service user, Social worker and observer. We were then taken to one side with people from other groups whom had be given the same role as ourselves and briefed on what it was we had to do. I was given the role of social worker, therefore i was told that I had to plan and undertake an initial visit and given the receipt of a referral. The referral consisted of concerns regarding a young boy, Max aged 2. The referral was made by the child s nursery. They had concerns about his behavior and presentation, for example, Max is often very tired, wears the same clothes for a number of consecutive days, is greedy when given food and aggressive towards his peers. Alongside this, questions regarding his mother, sally, were also raised. When staff at the nursery had spoken to her she seemed to show littler concern regarding her son s behavior, she often smells strongly of alcohol and bruises have been seen on her face. It was therefore my responsibility to take this information from this receipt of referral on board before then undertaking my role within the role play of a social worker making an initial visit. Initial Response As is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
