Codes and conventions are techniques used in music videos to construct meaning and provide structure that audiences understand. There are two main types - technical elements like camera angles and editing, and symbolic elements like poses and facial expressions. Certain codes are used within genres to allow audiences to become familiar. Narrative, performance, and mixture video styles tell stories or solely feature the artist. Technical elements like camerawork and sound design also shape the video's meaning and style. Mise-en-scene elements like lighting, costumes, location, and props further immerse viewers in the narrative or performance.
We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. Different techniques are used when creating
a music video to construct the meaning of
the video.
These are called ‘Technical’ and ‘Symbolic’
Technical
How the meaning is conveyed using technical equipment such as the camera angles, the
editing, the genre, diegetic and non-diegetic sounds.
Symbolic
The ways of showing meaning beyond technical techniques. This can consist of poses,
facial expressions, gestures and the mise-en-scene within the video.
3. Why are there codes and conventions?
■ Certain codes and conventions are used when creating a
music video to allow the audience to become familiar with
that particular genre.
■ This can provide a structure that the audience understands
and enjoys.
■ Codes and conventions also allow the lyrics of the song to fit
into what is happening within the video.
4. Codes and conventions within music
videos:
■ Editing style
■ Camera
■ The style
■ The sound
■ Stereotyping
5. Styles of music videos:
Performance
■ This consists of mainly the artist performing and dancing within the video.
■ An example of this is ‘Sin’ where the music video shows an ongoing performance from
the artist.
This style of music video is not as common as
it does not have a narrative to follow
therefore making it slightly less appealing to
re watch and be as drawn into.
6. Narrative
■ The narrative within a music video is the following of a story normally linked to the
lyrics of the song.An example of this style of music video is ‘The OneThat Got Away –
Katy Perry’This is because it revolves around the a romantic narrative surrounding a
flash back and transitions to the preset time also including cross overs between the
same past and present character.
This Is a narrative inspired music video as it has a linear narrative from
start to end, including a start middle and end. It also has a style of
narrative that grips the audience and keeps them interested.
7. Mixture
■ A mixture styled music video is one that consists of both of performance and a
narrative. An example of this styled video is ‘Heathens –Twenty One Pilots’This is
because it consists of a solid narrative but also includes performance techniques.
8. Cameo
■ A cameo music video is a performance style video in which the artist/s performs in
their own video however does not mime or perform to their song other than the acting
they portray.A good example of this is ‘A ChangeOf Heart –The 1975’
9. Use of camera
The use of camera can give a different effect on the video for example using only tracking
shots and fast pace movement with the camera can have a completely different effect to
using a range of different angles and establishing shots. This can change the style of the
narrative and change the view of the watcher.
However most music videos tend to use a wide range of different shots, angles and
techniques.
A lot of the time in popular music videos, over the shoulder and tracking shots are used to
portray reality in the video. For example within poplar songs such as ‘Robbers –The 1975’
and ‘I NeedYour Love – Calvin Harris’ this style of camerawork is used throughout
10. Sound
■ Sound is essential within a music video as it is the main base behind all other factors in
creating the video such as mise-en-scene and camerawork.
■ Sound within the media consists of non-diegetic and diegetic, non-diegetic to which is
edited in at the final stages of creating the music video such as a song being put on top
of the video. Diegetic sound is shown to be already present in the film. This can be
portrayed in a music video as some music videos have pre performances that
introduce and tell a brief story to interest the audience and allow the video to feel
more relatable.
11. Mise-En-Scene
■ Mise-En-Scene is also a large part in creating a music video and allow the video to attract the
audience. Mise-En-Scene within a music video consists of:
■ Lighting – How well lit the scene is, using either artificial lights or natural lighting.Artificial light will
be used when using plain backdrops within a studio, whereas natural lighting will be used outside.
Natural lighting videos tend to be more relatable normally with a narrative whereas artificial light
normally links to pop and dance style videos.
■ Costume – Use of certain outfits to set the scene and introduce characters
■ Location –This can add a lot of effect to a video as it portrays the genre and style of the video,
normally linking to the type of song used.
■ Colour – Different styles of tone, color and lighting can set a mood to the music video, representing
the lyrics to the song.
■ Props –This is performance equipment and can link to the narrative of the video suh as guns, alcohol,
sports equipment, band merchandise.
