Coca-Cola began in 1886 when Dr. John Pemberton, an Atlanta pharmacist, created a flavored syrup to be mixed into carbonated water and sold at soda fountains. He deemed the resulting drink "excellent". Frank M. Robinson named the beverage "Coca-Cola" and designed the script logo still used today. Originally a patent medicine, Coca-Cola was invented in the late 19th century and was bought by businessman Asa Griggs Candler, whose marketing led to Coca-Cola dominating the soft drink market in the 20th century. The drink refers to its original ingredients of coca leaves and kola nuts, though the current formula remains a trade secret
