Papua New Guinea has over 20,000 km of coastline vulnerable to flooding that affects thousands of people annually and causes $7-8 million in damage; initiatives to address this include mangrove planting, early warning systems, and education campaigns, with a mangrove planting handbook developed over four years to provide guidance tailored to PNG's conditions. While the handbook has been used since 2014, its full impact on reducing coastal flooding is still being evaluated.

Tourism has both positive and negative impacts on the coral reefs in Hikkaduwa Marine National Park in Sri Lanka. While tourism generates income, activities like snorkeling, diving, and boating can damage corals through contact or pollution. The study recommends strengthening laws against collecting corals and enforcing responsible practices. It also suggests regulating boat numbers and fuel, and improving waste management from resorts to protect the fragile reefs while supporting sustainable tourism.
Green Growth Investment in Coastal Areas
- Coastal wetlands provide significant carbon storage and ecosystem services related to climate resilience, fisheries productivity, and hydrology, making blue carbon a priority for mitigation and adaptation.

Kessler outlined the necessary elements for sustainable waste management as developing policies to support diversion programs, implementing programs like single-stream recycling and organics composting, building the required facilities for processing recyclables and organics, and establishing alternative funding sources since disposal-based funding can no longer be the primary model. Development of an Indonesian Sea Grant Partnership Program
Indonesia's Sea Partnership Program (SPP) provides a mechanism for addressing gaps in marine resource management at central and regional levels. SPP matches national strategic priorities with regional development issues through partnerships between regional universities, local governments, NGOs, and the private sector. The program was established in 2002 and had expanded to involve over 86 universities, 39 private institutions, and 77 NGOs across 33 provinces by 2010.

The National Environment Policy (NEP) aims to establish an umbrella framework for environmental protection and conservation in Vanuatu. The NEP will facilitate implementation of the Fisheries Policy by making environmental priorities and fisheries a national agenda. Regional approaches to adaptation planning : Senegal experiences

Development of an Indonesian Sea Grant Partnership Program
Indonesia's Sea Partnership Program (SPP) provides a mechanism for addressing gaps in marine resource management at central and regional levels. SPP matches national strategic priorities with regional development issues through partnerships between regional universities, local governments, NGOs, and the private sector. The program was established in 2002 and had expanded to involve over 86 universities, 39 private institutions, and 77 NGOs across 33 provinces by 2010.

Regional approaches to adaptation planning : Senegal experiences

Working at the public-private interface to improve the outlook for coral reefs
Coral reefs face mounting challenges, with many reef ecosystems now in the worst condition since scientists first donned diving masks. Redoubled efforts in climate change mitigation and ecosystem management, characterized by scaled-up investments, innovation, capacity building and greater participation by community and private sectors are all required if we are to give reefs the best chance of surviving this era of rapid global change. Reef Ecologic was established as a non-government organization to facilitate public-private partnerships necessary to address the challenges of contemporary coral reef management and sustainable development. In this seminar we will provide an overview of some of our recent work in Australia and overseas that will be of interest to staff of the GBRMPA, including coral bleaching surveys, tourism infrastructure assessments, assisted reef recovery at Magnetic Island, code of practice for recreational fishers, the Reef Manager’s Guide to Fostering Community Stewardship, management and leadership training for coral reef managers and strategic advice for Reef Trust investments.

2014 nyncc-tree-planting-report

Marine fisheries, especially tuna fisheries in the Pacific Islands region, are highly vulnerable to climate change. Increased sea surface temperatures and water column stratification are reducing nutrient levels and primary production. Models project that by 2050, 15% of skipjack tuna biomass could move from exclusive economic zones into high seas areas, potentially resulting in losses of over $60 million annually in license revenue for Pacific Island countries. Adaptation strategies are needed to reduce uncertainties, account for potential stock movements between countries' waters, and maintain jurisdiction over migratory tuna stocks to sustain fisheries and economies in the region.
6.1.4 Methodologies for climate rational for adaptation - GCF
This document discusses the Green Climate Fund's investments in climate information and early warning systems. It provides context on increasing climate extremes and disasters. It outlines the GCF's investment criteria and approved projects for climate information and early warning systems, totaling $659 million in financing for 23 projects benefiting 125 million people. 3) Resources like ClimPACT2 software, ClimDEX data, and Expert Team on Sector-specific Climate Indices workshops help countries access and use climate indices for their adaptation needs.
7.5.2 Regional TEM-A Part 1
Maximizing Synergies in the Climate Finance Architecture discusses challenges faced by countries in coordinating climate finance from various international and domestic sources. It emphasizes that effective complementarity and coherence between climate funds and within countries is needed to help address these challenges. Specifically, it recommends that countries strengthen coordination through their focal points, engage in strategic planning around climate finance as part of their NDCs and NAPs, and coordinate programming to identify financing priorities and opportunities for scaling up and co-financing projects.
7.5.1 Regional TEM-A Part 1
The technical meeting discussed financing adaptation priorities in countries. The Green Climate Fund has approved 26 adaptation project proposals worth $69 million and has 10 more in the final approval stages worth an additional $23 million. The Green Climate Fund portfolio allocates funding equally between adaptation and mitigation projects, with at least 50% of adaptation funds going to vulnerable countries. The meeting involved panels on maximizing climate finance synergies, private sector adaptation investment opportunities, the impact of adaptation investments on resilience and risk reduction, and sectoral roundtables on successful adaptation projects.

1) The session will discuss how pursuing land degradation neutrality (LDN) and climate change adaptation targets can achieve co-benefits. LDN seeks to maintain ecosystem services from land to enhance food security and resilience while increasing sustainability.
2) Achieving LDN requires preventing further land degradation through approaches like avoiding, reducing and reversing degradation to maintain the land's natural capital. National adaptation plans can integrate LDN planning.
3) Over 100 countries have committed to set LDN targets in line with SDG 15.3, showing growing recognition of LDN's ability to balance competing land needs and achieve multiple sustainability objectives.
7.3.5 A system approach to the integration of the agriculture sector in the NAP
This document discusses taking a systems approach to integrating forests, trees, and agroforestry into National Adaptation Plans. It outlines how planted forests can be considered as adaptation measures for natural resource management, agriculture, and urban greening. However, National Adaptation Plans often lack consideration of what is needed to realize the adaptation benefits of forests and trees. There is a need for dialogue between the forestry sector and other sectors to better integrate forestry management plans and communicate requirements to make forests and trees effective adaptation options.
7.3.4 A system approach to the integration of the agriculture sector in the NAP

This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.

- 2. • Coastal Systems Focus: on Coastal Flooding- PNG Context • Papua New Guinea has approximately 20,000km of coastline which is vulnerable to coastal flooding. • From analysis in 2010, it was estimated that it affects 6000 people, displaces 400, and kills several people annually. • Further estimated that coastal flooding causes USD 7-8 million in direct damage. • Climate change is anticipated increase the frequency and intensity of coastal flooding- immediate action required.

- 6. About MangrovePlanting Handbook Step-by-step guide on how to rehabilitate mangroves. Motivation behind the handbook is to address coastal flooding on communities from climate change but it can be used to plant mangroves for conservation, fisheries, eco-tourism or others. The process of planting mangroves are split into 6 stages in the book: • Rationale • Planning and site analysis • Implementation • Ensuring survival • Awareness and training • Funding Templates for workplans; awareness; budgeting; Seeking funding support, examples of nursery designs etc. Has been in use since 2014 to train communities in 6 Provinces in PNG. The training is supported by the Adaptation Fund and UNDP.
- 7. Lessons Time to produce- (4 years) from idea to final product. Support came from Adaptation Fund, Wildlife Conservation Society & Mama Graun Trust Fund (local NGO) to edit & publish. CCDA took the lead and it was all done in PNG. Success or Not?Has handbook helped communities reduce the impact of coastal flooding? Have yet to follow-up to find this out. Economic Analysis Was done for PNG by Mckinsey in 2010. Almost 10 years old. Was useful at the time, but we want to be able to produce that type of analysis in country now, through local expertise.
