What are composites materials?
• Definition
1. A material which is composed of two or more materials at a microscopic
scale and have chemically distinct phases.
2. Heterogeneous at microscopic scale but statically homogeneous at
microscopic scale
3. Constituents materials have significantly different properties
TYPES OF COMPOSITES MATERIAL
What are the types of composite
material?
Typically made of matrix and one or more
reinforcement.
They have different composition, shapes and
physical/chemical properties.
Classification of composites
• Matrices
1. Organic matrix composites
2. Polymer matrix composites
3. Metal matrix composite
4. Ceramic matrix composites
5. Carbon carbon composites
• Reinforcements
1. Fiber reinforced composites
2. Laminar composites
3. Particulate composites
Advantages
• Lower density (20 to 40%)
• Higher fatigue endurance
• Higher toughness than cermanic and glasses
• Versatility and tailoring by design
• Easy to machine
• Can combine other properties ( damping,corrosion )
DISADVANTAGES
• Not often environmentally friendly.
• Low recyclability.
• Cost can fluctuated.
• Can be damaged.
• Matrix degarades.
• Low reusability
Applications
1. In automobile industry (eg steel and aluminum body)
2. Marine application like shafts,hulls, spars ( for racing boats)
3. Communication antennae, electronic circuits boards
4. Safety equipments like ballistic protection and air bags of cars
5. Brakes disc,pads
6. Gear parts, push rods
