This document provides information about a phonetic workshop for English teachers being offered on July 26, 2014 by Teachers College at Columbia University. The workshop is designed to give teachers an overview of English sound production and word and sentence stress to help them work with students on improving pronunciation and prosody, as pronunciation is often neglected despite being important for language learners' communication skills.

PHONETICS FOR ENGLISH TEACHERS
Despite the fact that English language learners are almost invariably
interested in improving their pronunciation, ESL and EFL teachers
often neglect this aspect of effective communication. One reason may
be a lack of understanding of the English sound system.
This workshop is designed to give teachers an overview of the
mechanics of sound production as well as an understanding of
word- and sentence-level stress. Appropriate for both experienced
and novice teachers, the workshop will help prepare teachers to work
with their students on pronunciation and prosody.
