CLOUD WEBINAR 2.pptx
1. How cloud helps in achieving low
carbon emission & seamless
project delivery
2. Intent
• Nowadays, with uncertainties like COVID-19 pandemic, major construction projects came on hold/slowed down.
• One of the reason was use of age-old methods of communication (WhatsApp, Email, Phone Calls etc.) and
coordination between the various stakeholders
• This pandemic has forced people to work from home but without proper tools, effective WFH has not been
possible. (Eg. There was hardly any effect on day-to-day banking as banking sector has already adopted
technology well in advance.)
• Owners, Consultants and Contractors are adopting the technology in their firms but are working still in silos (AKA
Lonely BIM) which ultimately results in rework and other challenges.
3. Objective
• To spread awareness, on how Cloud Technology helps in lowering carbon
emission and also simplifying and managing the site related activities during the
construction of a project.
9. What is CDE?
• The common data environment (CDE), is the single source of information used to
collect, manage documentation.
• In other words, a common data environment is a digital hub where information
comes together as part of a typical building information modelling (BIM) workflow.
• If it involves information created during a project, it’s available to everyone who is
given permission from its inception through to the end of the project and beyond.

14. A CDE for Today and Tomorrow
• A common data environment sets your businesses and projects up for success today by
allowing your team to optimize and utilize the information when it matters most.
• Better yet, good data can empower future technologies, to accelerate project delivery.
• Adopt a common data environment to ensure that your approach to projects and
collaboration remains strong from design through operations.

Coordinate?

Collaboration means intra-
team
A process of working on the
same project at the same
time by the same discipline.
Coordination means inter-
team.
Different disciplines such as
structure, and architecture
come together to work on
the same project.
Technological
1) a cloud data center is a cluster of remote, distributed computing resources available on-demand through web services. it can’t exist without the internet.
Social
1) Available online, cloud services can make it possible for all societies to access IT technologies and knowledge that would help them achieve further growth.
Financial
Cloud computing allows businesses to save on purchasing, building, and maintaining IT infrastructure on their premises, as well as on hiring IT experts.
Environmental
Cloud migration will reduce your energy consumption and thus cut down your CO2 emissions.
Case Study:
a) When it comes to the AWS cloud environmental impact, Amazon claims that its cloud computing resources can accomplish the same task with a 88% lower carbon footprint than their traditional counterparts.
A) Higher utilization rate
Companies use many more servers than they actually need. As a result, the In-House centers have an extremely low utilization rate, using on average as little as 15% of their capacity.
B) Higher equipment refresh speed
Because of the new technologies that are usually more energy-efficient, a faster refresh time reduces electric power consumption in the long run.
C) New methods to reduce energy consumption
Since cloud data centers generate a lot of heat, as much as 40% of the power they consume goes into cooling their equipment. To tackle this problem, some cloud providers use sophisticated cooling equipment with higher energy efficiency rates.
D) Shift to renewable energy
All the major cloud service providers are gradually moving to “green” energy sources. For example, AWS is said to exceed 50% renewable energy usage and is now building four new wind farms.
Combined with the company’s existing renewable energy projects, these are expected to produce enough electricity to power 260,000 US homes for a year.
E) Remote working
People who work from home don’t have to use transport for daily commuting, which translates into saving 3 million tonnes of CO2 emissions a year.
Additionally, by replacing air travel with video conferencing tools, you are also minimizing your carbon footprint.
Now that you’re convinced a common data environment is worth it, it’s important to be able to recognise one. Some construction firms believe they have a common data environment, but it could be missing key features that are essential to reap a CDE’s benefits.
An effective CDE has the following attributes:
Easy to Use: User experience is an essential component of a common data environment. To be effective, it needs to be easy to use, meaning it’s intuitive with minimal to no training to get teams working in the system.
Accessible: Cloud-based means access is open (with adequate controls, of course) to anyone who needs the information whether they are in the office or out on a jobsite.
Integrated: A CDE must work with current systems and processes. The goal is to break down silos and increase collaboration overall.
Standardized and Scalable: A CDE should allow businesses to standardize workflows and processes. This works for large, small and growing companies at any phase.
Secure: In a well-functioning common data environment, data is never compromised. A common data environment is a secure for confidential business documents and information.
The above traits are the hallmarks of the system that you need to bring more consistency and collaboration to your projects. Now, let’s look at the steps your company can take to start implementing a common data environment.
All of the workflows and benefits we just outlined for Efficiencies, Quality and Risk are delivered with Autodesk BIM 360, our digital construction platform. BIM 360 offers integrated workflows across all the critical aspects of your project phases.
