Many states are consolidating data centers and servers and offering hosting services to local governments as cloud computing is a natural extension of consolidation efforts. However, there are issues with government cloud computing around security, access to data, and ownership of data. State governments can provide cloud computing, becoming centers of excellence that understand unique government requirements while providing secure data environments and cost savings that local government entities can take advantage of after performing cost-benefit analyses.
