This document outlines a close reading process involving multiple readings and discussions of a text. It begins with establishing the purpose for students and an independent first reading. This is followed by partner discussions to check meaning and identify confusions. A second teacher-led shared reading allows modeling of thinking aloud. More discussion then focuses on text-dependent questions. A third reading evaluates the quality of the text. The process concludes with discussion striving to gain deeper meaning from the text.
