NASA is an independent agency of the United States government responsible for the civilian space program as well as aeronautics and aerospace research. The agency was established in 1958 to replace the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. NASA works to explore space for the benefit of humanity, expand knowledge of Earth, planets, and astrophysical phenomena, and to develop new aeronautics and space technologies.
