Clif Slade presents his method for growing more crops in a small space to maximize profits. He details how to grow 87 vegetable beds within a single acre, each 500 square feet in size, to gross $43,560 in sales. Key aspects of his approach include close row spacing, organic compost and fertilizer, high tunnel greenhouses, and establishing multiple marketing channels like farmers markets and CSAs. His goal is to show farmers how to successfully grow and sell more from a small plot of land.
The document introduces the square foot gardening method, which involves dividing the garden into small square plots and using a specific soil mixture to plant a variety of crops in a small space with little weeding or maintenance. Some key aspects of square foot gardening outlined in the document are that it is simple and productive; adaptable to any experience level or space; and saves time, water, money and space compared to traditional row gardening while being very productive. The document also promotes the benefits of square foot gardening such as self-sufficiency, nutrition, stress relief and beautifying the environment.

Precision farming uses GPS and soil sampling to create detailed maps of farmlands, showing variability in soil nutrients. This allows farmers to understand their soil's strengths and weaknesses, avoid guesswork, and ensure optimal planting and fertilization. As a result, farmers can increase yields, improve incomes, and lift themselves out of poverty. The document outlines the process, from soil sampling to producing recommendation reports, and argues this approach aligns with Nigeria's agricultural goals and could create many new jobs.
This document provides details about Three Springs Farm, a 20-acre certified organic farm located 65 miles east of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The farm is operated by Emily Oakley and Michael Appel with no additional labor. They sell their produce through a local farmer's market and CSA program. Harvesting is the most labor intensive activity and involves cutting crops, sorting, washing, and packing them into bins and crates to be stored in the farm's walk-in cooler. The farm has made improvements to their post-harvest handling, wash station, and cooler to increase efficiency and protect their health.
Warren Schneckenburger shares his experience transitioning to reduced tillage and cover crops on his farm in Morrisburg, Ontario. He began using disk ripping on corn acres in 2011 after attending a no-till conference that opened his eyes to the benefits. While this reduced tillage, he still wanted full soil cover in August to plant earlier. Cereal rye became his cover crop of choice for northern climates due to its ease of establishment and termination. Through trial and error, he developed equipment and techniques for interseeding rye into standing soybean crops. While cover crops provided soil benefits, challenges included frost damage, residue management, and ensuring sufficient moisture. Examining soil with a shovel revealed
This document explains how to perform a magic trick called "Rice Magic". It involves filling two identical bottles with rice, packing the rice down tighter in one bottle to create the illusion that it contains less rice. When audience members try to lift the bottles by chopsticks inserted in the rice, the packed bottle will seem much lighter due to friction trapping the rice and chopstick inside. Pouring the rice simultaneously reveals there was the same amount in both bottles.
This document provides instructions for a magic trick called "Rice Magic". It involves filling two identical bottles with rice, with one bottle containing packed rice labeled as "light rice" and the other containing fluffed rice labeled as "regular rice". When an audience member tries to lift the bottles by chopsticks inserted in the rice, they will be unable to lift the regular rice bottle but the magician can lift the light rice bottle, tricking the audience into thinking the bottles contain different amounts of rice when they actually contain the same amount. The trick works due to friction trapping the chopstick in the packed "light rice" bottle.
During its first operational year, Xavier Urban Farm built a portfolio of local businesses in the Cincinnati area to sell its produce to, including restaurants, breweries, markets, and Xavier University. It sold various amounts of produce like tomatoes, beets, carrots, and mixed vegetables to these partners. Any residual produce was donated to local food banks and shelters according to the farm's zero food waste policy.

How Co-ops Spur Organic Farming in the Global SouthNFCACoops
Rodney North, Equal Exchange spokesperson for 15 years and former Board Director presents on how co-ops spur organic farming in the global south. In many places around the world, farming organically requires a collective effort. Equal Exchange (a worker co-op) works directly with 55 co-ops of organic farmers in 23 countries. This covers how the co-operative business model, both in the US and abroad, makes organic farming both feasible and attractive.
There are several methods for making coffee, with the basic requirements being coffee powder and hot water. Some common methods are the instant method, where soluble coffee is mixed with hot water; the saucepan or jug method, where ground coffee steeps in hot water; the cafetiere method using a French press; and the percolator and filter methods that pass hot water through ground coffee. Proper preparation results in flavorful coffee with aroma and body.
The document discusses diversifying farms through a variety of activities and provides examples of diversification that farms have implemented. It then discusses Fleeds Farm, providing its location details and existing facilities, which include a farmhouse, bungalow, barn, buildings, pasture and arable land. Readers are tasked to work in pairs to diversify Fleeds Farm by selecting 3-5 changes from options like renewable energy, specialty crops, recreation, hospitality, and labeling them on a map of the farm along with the reasons for each change. Factors to consider include the local climate, proximity to towns, intended visitors, and existing farm resources.
The document outlines Scott Hall's homestead plan, which includes goals of being self-sustainable by growing fruits, vegetables, and raising chickens and turkeys to support his household and others. Some challenges are water access, storage, equipment, time management, pest control, and improving the soil. Opportunities include existing infrastructure like a greenhouse, composter, drip irrigation system, chicken coop, and grapevines/rhubarb. The homestead site is located in Florence, Colorado on a 100x50 foot plot with additional space and a sunny field.

The document analyzes search logs from healthcare professionals using an online medical reference source to explore the potential for using these logs as a data source for post-market drug safety surveillance. The researchers annotate search queries to identify drug and adverse event terms and perform statistical analysis to detect associations between drugs and events within search sessions. Their approach achieves good discrimination for a reference set of established adverse drug events but lower performance for a reference set of more recently identified events, warranting further investigation.

Clifton Slade - A Diversified Production SystemMark Klingman
Clifton Slade owns Slade Farms in Surry, Virginia and utilizes a diversified production system to be successful. He grows a variety of commercial vegetables, raises chickens and hogs, and engages in activities like gleaning cabbage and processing hogs. Slade has also established a farm market and roadside stands to sell his produce and meat directly to customers. He attributes his success to practices like irrigation, annual soil sampling, marketing, and maintaining good manners.
This document discusses soil management practices at Pleasant Valley Farm in Argyle, New York. The farm focuses on building healthy soil through increasing organic matter, using mulch, cover crops, and soil amendments based on annual soil tests. When the owners purchased the land in 1988, the soil had very low organic matter after 30 years of conventional corn production. They prioritized building organic matter through applying thick layers of straw mulch annually and using a bale chopper to incorporate crop residues. This increased the organic matter to over 4% and created highly productive soil. The farm also relies on soil tests, compost, and a variety of organic fertilizers and amendments tailored to the soil needs.
This document discusses the benefits of growing your own vegetables, including reduced food miles and packaging waste. It provides instructions for creating a vegetable patch at school, including planting seeds and composting food waste. Examples are given of schools that have successfully grown their own food and made money through farmers markets. The aim is for the school to grow 5 types of vegetables, compost waste, and use the vegetables for school dinners.

The document summarizes the history and production process of coffee. It details that coffee was first discovered in Ethiopia in 850 AD when a goat herder noticed his goats became lively after eating coffee berries. It then traces the spread of coffee to Arabia, Turkey, Europe and the establishment of early coffee shops. The document also outlines the various steps of coffee production from growing the coffee tree to harvesting, processing, exporting and brewing methods like espresso and cappuccino.

This document discusses Russ Wilson's family farm, Wilson Land & Cattle Co., which uses innovative grazing techniques such as grazing livestock on standing corn and cover crops. The farm raises several species of livestock and plants a diverse cover crop mix to improve soil health. Data showed that grazing livestock on standing corn and cover crops produced over 15,000 pounds of dry matter per acre at a relatively low cost, and provided significant savings and labor reductions compared to harvesting and feeding corn and hay. Soil tests also indicated increases in nutrients. The document provides recommendations for others interested in similar grazing methods.
