The document discusses the environment, environmental changes, pollution, and ways to reduce pollution. It defines the environment as everything around us, including living and non-living things. Environmental changes are often caused by human impacts or natural processes. Pollution is the introduction of contaminants that cause harm, and comes from various sources. Reducing pollution requires sustainable choices in transportation, food, energy, and properly disposing of waste and chemicals. Failing to address pollution could lead to extinction of species and increased global warming.
2. What is the Environment?
– Environment is everything that is around us.
– It can be living or non-living things.
– It includes physical, chemical and other natural forces.
– Living things live in their environment.
– They constantly interact with it and adapt themselves to conditions in their
environment.
– In the environment there are different interactions between animals, plants,
soil, water, and other living and non-living things.
3. Why is it changing?
– Environmental change is most often caused by human influences and natural
ecological processes.
– Environmental changes can include any number of things, including natural
disasters, human interferences, or animal interaction.
– Environmental change does not only encompass physical changes, but it can be
things like an infestation of invasive species is also environmental changes.
4. Why Does this mean danger?
Environmental changes comprise of-
– Extreme heatwaves that kill even healthy people within hours.
– Acid rain that has many ecological effects, but none greater than its impact on
lakes, streams, wetlands, and other aquatic environments.
– Ozone layer depletion that increases the amount of UVB that reaches the
Earth's surface.
5. What is the ecosystem?
– Ecosystem may be defined as a biological community in which a group of living life
forms live in conjunction with the nonliving segments of their surroundings (things
like air, water and mineral soil), associating as a system.
– These biotic and abiotic parts are viewed as connected together through
supplement cycles and vitality flows.
– Ecosystem is characterized by the system of interactions among living beings, and
amongst life forms and their environment.
– Ecosystem provides us huge amount of useful goods and benefits upon which each
and every life form depends.
– Ecosystem management principles helps us to know that instead of managing
individual species, natural resources should be managed at ecosystem level.
6. What is pollution as a
environmental change?
– Pollution is the introduction of
contaminants into the natural
environment that cause adverse
change.
– Pollution can take the form of
chemical substances or energy,
such as noise, heat or light.
– Pollutants, the components of
pollution, can be either foreign
substances/energies or naturally
occurring contaminants.
– Pollution is often classed as point
source or nonpoint source
pollution. In 2015, pollution killed
9 million people in the world.
7. Can we reduce pollution?
– Pollution can be easily reduced.
– Pollution occurs when we misuse the nature’s resources for making difficult
tasks easier for us.
– If we reduce these needs and be accustomed to what nature provides us with,
we can easily reduce pollution.
– Different types of pollutions have different effects, causes and solutions.
The following slides discuss different steps that can be
used to keep our environment clean.
8. Make Sustainable transport
choices
– Walk or ride your bike whenever possible
– Use public transports
– Consolidate your trips
– Carpool to schools/ tuitions/ markets etc. whenever possible
– Get regular maintenance on your vehicle
– Drive safely
– Consider purchasing a hybrid or electric car for your next vehicle
9. Making Sustainable Food
Choices
– Choose local but healthy food whenever possible.
– Reduce or eliminate your consumption of animal products from factory farms.
– Choose organically grown fruits and vegetables.
– Grow your own fruits and vegetables.
10. Making Sustainable Energy
Choices
– Turn off lights and electronics when you are not in the room.
– Look for small changes that can lead to big energy savings.
– Keep your thermostat set to 78℉ (25C) in warmer months and 68 (20C) in the
colder months.
– Make sure your windows and air ducts are well-sealed.
11. The 3R’s Rule
– Waste management includes all aspects of the process to manage waste from
its manufacture to its ultimate disposal.
– The process includes, collection, transport, sorting, treatment and disposal of
waste.
– It also includes such things as monitoring and regulation which applies to both
commercial and domestic waste disposal.
12. Keep chemicals out of water
supply
– Use fewer and environmentally friendly chemicals.
– Don't use pesticides and herbicides.
– Don't flush medication.
– Dispose of toxic waste properly.
– Conserve water.
13. Get Involved and Educate Others
– Learn about the major polluters in your area.
– Tell people about what you know.
– Write an article for your school or local newspaper.
– Protest local polluters.
– Join an environmental group.
14. What would happen if we did nothing about
pollution?
– Extinction- Pollution has an adverse
impact on wildlife and will continue
to do so well into the future. A 2004
report in “New Scientist” states that
pollution is the primary cause of the
extinction of various species of
butterflies and other insects in Great
Britain. Although pollution poses a
threat to creatures on land, aquatic
creatures may face an even greater
danger.
– Global warming- Burning fossil fuels
for energy, such as coal, oil and
natural gas, releases carbon dioxide
and other toxins into the Earth’s
atmosphere. High carbon dioxide
levels increase the air’s temperature.
According to the John Ray Initiative,
this can cause the Earth’s average
temperature to rapidly change.
15. So, to prevent
extinction of the
human race, we,
human beings
ourselves have to
take initiative. If,
together we follow
these rules, we can
make the Earth a
better place to live
in.
