Monosaccharides are simple sugars that cannot be broken down further with hydrolysis. They have general formula CnH2nOn where n ranges from 3 to 8. Oligosaccharides are composed of 2 to 10 monosaccharide units joined together. Polysaccharides are composed of more than 10 monosaccharide units joined together. Upon hydrolysis, oligosaccharides break down into their component monosaccharides, while polysaccharides break down into a large number of monosaccharide units. Common examples of oligosaccharides include sucrose, lactose, and maltose, while examples of polysaccharides include starch and cellulose.
