When Harmful Substances Contaminate the
Environment it isCalled Pollution.
Pollution refers to the very bad condition of
environment in terms of quantity and quality .
Atmosphere is the life blanket of
Earth.
It is therefore essential that we know
more about the atmosphere and the
ways in which it is Polluted.
The contamination of air with
harmful , unwanted substances,
like toxic gases, smoke and dust,
which have harmful effects on
both living organisms and non
living objects is called air
pollution.
Major sources ofAir Pollution
- Industries
-Automobiles and Domestic fuels
-High Proportionof undesirable
gases, suchas sulphurdioxide and carbon monoxide
- forestfire
-volcaniceruption

TAJMAHAL- DAMAGING EFFECTS
OF AIR POLLUTANTS
The industries located in and
around AGRA like rubber,
automobiles, chemical and the
Mathura oil refinery have been
responsible for producing
pollutants.
EFFECT: Acid rain corrodes
the marble of the monument.
The phenomenon is also
called’ Marble cancer’.
The Contamination of
water with undesirable
substances which makeit
unfit for usage is termed
water Pollution.

1. Industrial sewage
2. Domestic sewage
3. Human activities
4. Agricultural waste
5. Oil spills
Human health: cholera,
dysentery, typhoid,
jaundice etc.
Eutrophication: algal
bloom
Biological
magnification
Aquatic life
Rivers should not be used for
washing clothes or bathing
animals in.
Harvesting of Rainwater to meet
waterrequirements.
Dams &embankments must be
created.
The riversmust not be
contaminated.
In sacred riverlikeGanga the dead
bodies shouldn’tthrown.
The Ganga Action plan was launched in India on
14th January 1986 by Rajiv Gandhi. Its main
objective was to protect the river from the hazards of
pollution. It aims at improving the quality of its water
and preventing further pollution. It acts by preventing
the industrial waste from being dumped into the
waters. It acts by treating the sewage before it is
discharged into the water bodies.
The treatment of the sewage is done by various
techniques. The treatment required the instalment of
sewage treatment plants in 27 cities. This was to
prevent the further addition of the toxic substances
to the water bodies. Before dumping the sewage
waste into the rivers it is treated in the plant to
remove the toxic chemicals.
The main objective of Ganga Action Plan are
(i)To improve the water quality by Interception,
Diversion and treatment of domestic sewage and
(ii) Present toxic and industrial chemical wastes
from identified grossly polluting units entering in
to the river
