INTERIOR DESIGN

This design studio emphasizes the elements used by the designer in the development of hospitality
interior spaces such as restaurants, clubs, coffee shops, and hotels. Both conceptual and practical issues
are explored relative to site analysis, programming, space planning, green design, circulation, volume,
furnishings, color, and texture in the design of interior space.
HOSPITALITY DESIGN
SMOOTHIE SHOP
The assignment for this project was to develop a smoothie shop for an establishment located in a relatively small
college town. Based on a micro and macro point of view, the design proposal was derived from a contextual
understanding of its location and purpose. Rendered site plans, elevations, sections, perspectives and plan views
were completed with an emphasis on free-hand, rapid visualization techniques. A suggested name, branding,
program and typology design via 3D modeling were also required.

RESORT - LOBBY, RESTAURANT, BAR
The project objective was to develop the brand imaging and interior design of three typologies of spaces incorporated
into the development of a resort located in Fiji. Working collaboratively with two partners, the assignment was to develop
a concept design proposal for the entryway leading to the lobby, the restaurant, and the outdoor bar and lounge. Case
study research on hotels and native Fiji customs were also required prior to any design development.

This design studio focuses on the aesthetic and functional issues related to the creation of freestanding
furniture. Special attention is given to the fabrication of materials and construction methods, primarily
exploring the process of design transposed to production.

CONCEPT - IDEA OF PATTERN & PUZZLE
OBJECTIVE - CREATE A COMPOSITION RELATIVE TO THE IDEA OF A ‘CANTILEVER’
CANTILEVER DESIGN
The project objective was to design and fabricate an object that explores the idea of a balanced cantilever. One clear coat
finish and two types of joinery methods were used in the construction of the object. Using only reclaimed materials, the
object had to be able to convey a composition relative to the idea of a ‘cantilever’ via static or dynamic conditions.

RECYCLED FURNITURE DESIGN
The main project intent was to focus on the importance of designing furniture that promotes sustainable practices. In
the development of the “bench/stool/table furniture piece,” modularity was the primary design focus. To limit sequential
purchases of products, a modular furniture piece (with various functions) is often regarded as a highly sustainable
practice. Ultimately, designing furniture that promotes sustainability and challenges the status quo of existing products
were two of the main project objectives.

Interned for Interior Office Solutions in Irvine, CA. The main responsibility of the intern was to transfer
hand-rendered drawings of furniture designs into 3D models with accurate dimensions and applied
finishes, via the computer program, Google SketchUp. Accompanying colleagues to metal and wood
vendors was also essential in order to ensure smooth project development and positive work relationships.

Using guidelines established by the Advanced Placement College Board, students must prepare a portfolio
of their best work. At the end of the year, students must submit their portfolio to a panel of judges for
an evaluation to determine the final grade. Students are expected to complete a minimum of 40 works,
including a personal concentration of at least 12 pieces that focuses on a theme of personal interest to
each student.
