ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I, Bhagyashri Simpson, student of Interior Design Department at Dezyne
E’cole College, am extremely grateful to each and every individual who
has contributed in successful completion on my project.
I express my gratitude towards Dezyne E’cole College for their guidance

SYNOPSIS
In this project I have studied about various aspects of Furniture Design.
Initially, I studied The History of Furniture Construction where I learnt
about the various styles of furniture, which have been designed since
different ages and are being designed today, in the modern period. It also
taught me about the drawbacks and perks of those designs and how to
incorporate the perks and change the drawbacks that would help me
while designing furniture. I also studied about the various types of
furniture. Further, I studied about Anthropometrics and Ergonomics of
furniture, where I was taught about its application according to a
person’s comfort, security and functionality of use. Lastly, I studied
about various wooden joints and their applications in designing
furniture. Incorporating all these aspects that I have studied so far, I have
made this project.

INTRODUCTION OF PRODUCT DESIGN
A product is an object whose usage fulfills a purpose of a person’s need. For example,
be it a needle or a large vehicle, they are all products, fulfilling their respective
purposes. These products could be found in a variety of designs. Therefore, this
creates a need to design a single type of product with variations depending upon the
new techniques that have come up or the change in the taste and preferences of the
consumer using that particular product. Hence, this has brought up the concept of
product design.
The product design industry is as large as the number of types of products present in
the market. The various industries with the various types of products available.
Here, I will be talking about the furniture design industry that is one of the branches
of product design industry that deals with commercial design.

INTRODUCTION OF FURNITURE DESIGN
Furniture consists of chairs, tables, beds and other pieces that provide comfort and
convenience in our daily lives. Many kinds of furniture are used in homes, schools,
and offices. In addition to being useful, furniture is attractively designed to make our
surroundings more pleasant.
The furniture design industry is divided into three main categories –
i. Furniture for residential use.
ii. Furniture for commercial use.
iii. Furniture for transport use.
People who study the history of furniture have given names to the different styles.
Some styles are named for important people, some styles are named for historical
periods, and some styles take their name from an art movement.
The history of furniture can be seen as a series of styles that become popular for a
time and then fall from fashion. Designers then revive earlier styles, adapting them
to fit the taste of the time.

FURNITURE HISTORY TIMELINE
6
The need for furniture was understood long back, at the beginning of human
civilization. In those times, the concept of furniture was not yet known, so they used
various objects made spontaneously by nature. Over the centuries, due to the
preferences of societies that lived in the given age, their forms changed. New types of
furniture were created that fulfilled specific functions: to sit, lie down, for work, for
dining, storing and others. Similarly, the preferences of material used for the
construction of furniture changed over the period of time. Starting from stone to
wood to metal, there are enumerous materials available in the market for the
construction of furniture.

OF OFFICE
FURNITURE
INTRODUCTION OF OFFICE FURNITURE
An office building, also known as an office block or business center is a form of
commercial building which contains space mainly designed to be used for offices.
The primary purpose of an office building is to provide a workplace and working
environment primarily for administrative and managerial workers.
Designing office spaces requires attention to the proper arrangement of individual
and group workstations.
Depending on the purpose, office furniture is designed for individual office work,
construction and designing works, the work of groups and problem teams, call center,
training tasks, conferences, individual and collective customer services.
Due to different purposes, each of the given types of furniture is characterised by
different design solutions which ensure mobility or stability, variability of geometry
and dimensions, sufficient stiffness, stability and strength.
Modern office furniture has a very complex design and is equipped with
electromechanical devices that facilitate the use of the furniture and optimal use of
office space. Mobility, that is a group of construction characteristics conducive to
easy movement, is currently the key advantage of office furniture.
The emerging new aspects of functionality of a furniture, and therefore, new
structural solutions, must, regardless of the complexity of the structure, meet the
standardised safety rules of use, strength and stiffness.
