CLAIMS IN A WRITTEN
TEXT
Claims – central argument or thesis statement of
a text
- essentially arguable but used as a primary
point to support or prove an argument
- can persuade, argue, prove, suggest
something to a reader that he may or may not agree
3 TYPES OF CLAIMS
CLAIM OF FACT
 makes an assertion about something that can be proved or
disproved with factual evidence
Examples:
1. Barangay Lasang is part of Davao City.
2. Sometimes people use social media like Facebook to bully
someone.
CLAIM OF VALUE
 a qualitative assertion based on moral or philosophical
standard
Examples:
1. It is wrong to use social media to air out personal
problems.
2. Death penalty is unjust.
CLAIM OF POLICY
propose and promotes policies and solutions
Examples:
1. We must wear face mask when we go outside.
2. There should be criminal charges pressed on
people who use social media to bully others.
 Classify the sentences according to the type of Claim
1. The oldest known disease in the world is leprosy.
2. The GSW is the best team in NBA.
3. A.L Navarro National High School is located in Lasang, Davao
City.
4. We should attend class regularly.
5. Money can’t buy happiness.
 CLAIM OF FACT

  • 4. CLAIMS IN A WRITTEN TEXT Claims – central argument or thesis statement of a text - essentially arguable but used as a primary point to support or prove an argument - can persuade, argue, prove, suggest something to a reader that he may or may not agree
  • 5. 3 TYPES OF CLAIMS
  • 6. CLAIM OF FACT  makes an assertion about something that can be proved or disproved with factual evidence Examples: 1. Barangay Lasang is part of Davao City. 2. Sometimes people use social media like Facebook to bully someone.
  • 7. CLAIM OF VALUE  a qualitative assertion based on moral or philosophical standard Examples: 1. It is wrong to use social media to air out personal problems. 2. Death penalty is unjust.
  • 8. CLAIM OF POLICY propose and promotes policies and solutions Examples: 1. We must wear face mask when we go outside. 2. There should be criminal charges pressed on people who use social media to bully others.
