Introduction
In a group of 6 members, everyone of us have to do our task by selecting a
10m x 10m site within Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus in order to propose a
green space for the following site. Apart from that, we need to collect data and do site
analysis by noting down the directions of wind and sunlight at different timing.
Besides that, sound, smell, wind, sunlight, views and circulation are also required in
the report. In addition, the concept, master plan, planting plan, bill of quantities and
construction detail as well as maintenance plan are also needed.
The aim of this project is to introduce the students to understand more about
Landscape Project from ideas stage to completion. Last but not least, every one of our
group members will approach and exposure to concept, analysis master plan, costing,
planting plan, construction and maintenance. Based on the data we have collected we
will then improve the site and create a sustainable landscape.

Site Analysis
The actual size of the roof terrace is 30M x 16.7M but we only pick 10M x 10 M
within the site. The site we have chosen is basically an open space area where no one
is using it. It is an unused area. This area is located at Block E, Level 2. Its known as a
roof terrace or even called as a balcony.
It is definitely a good space to create a sustainable landscape by imposing green space
proposal.
The Surrounding
In our site there is a 3 meters long roof and also a perimeter scupper drain at the
edge of the vacant roof terrace. Next to the site there are female and male toilets.
The entrance is from the corridor
Condition Of The Chosen Site
 Good ventilation
 Expose to sunlight at different timing
 Quiet
 The environment is suitable for people to relax and study
 Open space (roof terrace)
Female and Male toilets
5
Circulation
The site only has one entrance which is from the corridor and the staircase from level
3. This existing roof garden is easily accessible form different direction. The people
could come from the architecture studios, the law and business offices and also via the
lift. This site is considered as an uninteresting and unpopular less people will enter
the place since it has nothing special.
Wind
The wind flows through the area at different direction and also different timing. As in
the morning approximately 10:21a.m the wind comes from the direction of East. As in
the afternoon around 12 p.m the wind flows from different direction which is
Southwest. The wind is strong. However, when its in the evening like 6 – 7pm the
wind get weaker.
Sunlight
The sun illuminate the site in the morning around 10 a.m. The sun rises from east. In
the morning the sunlight is warm and it is not as hot as afternoon which is around 2 –
4 p.m.
Sound
There is only minor noise comes form the northeast. The sound actually comes from
the air conditions. The noise from people in Block E is barely hearable. There are also
noises coming from the roads as the cars pass by anytime which is at the east
direction.
Smell
There is no smell flowing through the site even though the toilets are located at the
northwest direction. There is no further notice or smell about the toilets and other
areas as well.
Different Views From The Site

North view
By looking at the north direction, this is the entrance to access the roof garden.
South View
Good View
From our selected site we are able to look at the south view which is considered as a
good view. From here we are allowed to see the car park, tennis court the buildings,
areas that are under construction, LDP highway as well as the road from Taylor’s
University campus.
7
West View
Moderate View
Looking from this angle we can view the Block D building and also the commercial
block.
Southeast View
Moderate View
Within this view we are only able to see minor things such as a quarter of car park,
the road and trees. The view is limited.
Southwest View
Moderate View
8
This angle is also limited because we could only able to see part of the lake and car
park. The view is not fully shown.
East View
Bad View
There is nothing more to show at the east direction. It has the least interesting view
among all the directions. We could barely see the buildings that are far away from our
site.

Concept
The aim of choosing our site on a balcony is to use and fill up the unused spaces.
Furthermore, to recreate a natural and relaxing area with the combination of
greenish and wooden environment for students, staffs and also for visitors in
Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus. Being on a balcony, one of the advantages
of our site is that it has a good view from a higher level.
After doing the site analysis, we have decided to use the concept of these three
elements that are ease, greenery and union. Our garden focuses on the concept
of ease providing a small space for people to relax and relieve stress by enjoying
the greenery and good view. A garden with seating, walking spaces to enable
better circulation flow and a trellis filled with swing and plants for relaxation.
This garden creates a relaxing area for everyone including visitors where people
who visit can be at ease and find peace. Having a trellis in the garden is to allow
people who visits our garden to relax by playing the swing and also to act as a
shade. Students can also spend time at the garden while waiting for class or even
study in a comfort and greenish area while for the staffs, they can relax and take
a break during teatime at our garden.
Our garden also brings the concept of union which means joining people
together. As our garden is a relaxing space provided for everyone, this garden
would naturally allow people to get closer to one another and have closer
relationship and friendship. People can have discussions and studies or a break
at our garden and eventually gathers everyone together in this green space.
The design of this proposed site is also based on combination of greenery with
woods and bricks concept to produce a mixture of modern style at the same time
a greenish style. The purpose of making the site greenish with plants is to enable
the garden to be more eco friendly. Moreover, by using this concept, visitors can
relax in this garden with the green atmosphere and relaxing mood of the site.
This proposed site located on the balcony provides good and far view while the
green plants bring comfort to the eyes which are also stress relieving.

Plant Lists
1. Texas Mountain Laurel
 It is well-adapted to arid and semi-arid habitats but is most common
in riparian zones,
 An evergreen, its leaves are innately compound, with small, roughly
spatula leaflets,
 The leaflets are rather thick, and waxy to the touch,
 Never tall, and rarely having a straight trunk, its bark is smooth in all
but the oldest specimens,
 It grows slowly to a height of 15 feet
(4.6 m) and a crown diameter of
10 feet (3.0 m).
 It is well-adapted
 Provide shade
 Mitigate noise and provide passive
heating and cooling
2. Morning Glory
 Morning Glories open at the first hint of sunlight and fade later in the
later day,
 The plants develop into long vines that produce multitudes of trumpet-
shaped flowers,
 The plants either trail on the ground or
attach themselves to upright surfaces
with their tendrils,
 This is to reduce the sunlight cause they
will attach themselves to the wall.
 Attached to trellis and provide shade
15
3. Sweet Peas
 Sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus) is a flowering plant in
the genus Lathyrus in the family Fabaceae (legumes),
 It is an annual climbing plant, growing to a height of 1–2 meters
(nearly six feet and six inches), where suitable support is available,
 The leaves are pinnate with two leaflets and a terminal tendril, which
twines around supporting plants and structures helping the sweet pea to
climb.
 The flowers are purple, 2-3.5 centimeters broad.
 This is functioned as reduce sunlight too.
 It can climb on trellis to reduce the sunlight and beautify the garden.
4. Alpinia
 Alpinia purpurata, red ginger, also called ostrich plume and pink cone
ginger,
 These are native Malaysian plants with showy flowers on long brightly
colored red bracts,
 They look like the bloom, but the true flower is the small white flower
on top,
 This is to act as a decoration.
 Easily grown and maintained
 Useful as a tall informal hedge or screen
 Used as a shrub border in mass planting
16
5. Chinese Juniper
 Juniperus chinensis (Chinese Juniper) is a juniper that grows as
a shrub or tree with a very variable shape, reaching 1-20 m tall,
 The leaves grow in two forms, juvenile needle-like leaves 5-10 mm
long, and adult scale-leaves 1.5-3 mm long
 The shape of the shrub can be cropped into desire shape
6. Prunus Laurocerasus
 It is an evergreen species and small to medium-sized tree,
 Growing to 5 to 15 meters (16 to 49 feet) tall, rarely to 18 meters
(59 feet), with a trunk up to 60 cm broad,
 The leaves are dark green, leathery, shiny, (5–) 10–25(–30) cm long
and 4–10 cm broad, with a finely serrated margin
 It is often used for hedges, as a screening plant, and as a
massed landscape plant.
 Used for hedges as a screening plants and as a massed landscape plants
17
7. Zoysia Grass
 They can tolerate wide variations in temperature, sunlight, and water,
 These grasses are widely used for lawns in temperate climates,
 Create fairways and teeing areas,
 They resist disease and hold up well under traffic.
 Widely use lawn temperate climate
 Resist to disease and hold up well under traffic
8. Geranium
 The flowers have five petals and are coloured white, pink, purple or
blue, often with distinctive veining,
 Geraniums will grow in any soil as long as it is not waterlogged,
 Since these kind of flowers have a lot of colour, so this can produce a
colourful garden and makes people feel comfortable when looking at it.
 Produce a colourful garden
 Easy to grow
18
9. Callistemon (Bottle Brush Tree)
 They are relatively slow growing though in time the larger species can
grow up to 15 m (49 feet)
 Some are ground hugging, and grow to only 0.5 m (1.6 feet).
 The leaves are linear to lanceolate and they are not deciduous.
 Have pleasant fragrance to attract people
10. Mimosa Tree
 It has a compound leaf with many small leaflets, very long and narrow,
 Mimosa flowers have no petals but grow a dense bundle of thin
stamens, around an inch long, that look like silk threads,
 This leads to the common name "silk tree" for mimosas. The color of
the flowers varies from white to a bright red, and they are very
attractive to bees and hummingbirds,
 Some varieties also have flowers varying from a cream color to a pale
yellow, although these are less common.

Construction Details
Ceramic Floor Tiles (270M x 270M)
As in our site the floor is concrete and rough surface in order to minimize the injuries
and to make the floor the same level with the floor outside the entrance which is
corridor. In the roof garden the floor is without any ceramic tile the rough surface will
bring disadvantage and harm to people.
Therefore to improve the 10M x 10M,ceramic floor tile is the best choice. Within
following site there will be filled up witth137 ceramic tiles. Before putting the
ceramic tiles, the concrete surfaces first need to be balanced. The concrete surface is
then needed to cover up with floor underlay and waterproof membrane. By separating
the ceramic floor tile and the waterproof membrane there will be a layer of cement
separator.

Trellis
On our selected site the trellis functions to hang the plants and acts as a shield for the
swings.
So it reduces the sunlight as well and the hanging plants will obtain sufficient sunlight.
In order to stabilize the trellis, the stands should be installing underground. Part of the
stand will be instilled in the hole approximately 11’. After that, a layer of concrete
cement will be poured inside the hole in order to stabilize the trellis. Soil is required
as well after cementing the trellis. The swings and the plants are able to place under it
when the trellis is finally done.

Conclusion
By proposing such sustainable landscape project this area will eventually turn
into a popular landscape and capture the attention of students, staff and visitors. In our
green space proposal there are 10 different types of species. Majority of the plants and
trees play an important role which are sun blocking and sound blocking so that
everyone gets enjoy the green garden to the fullest. There are numerous elements in
the garden such as walkways, swings, and benches. The aim of this green space is
actually to fill up the unused spaces.
In addition, to recreate a natural and relaxing area with the combination
of greenish and wooden environment for students, staffs and also for visitors in
Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus. Being on a balcony, one of the advantages
of our site is that it has a good view from a higher level. This proposal definitely
will bring benefits to the people and the vacant roof terrace has been used
wisely.

A garden with seating, walking spaces to enable better circulation flow and a trellis filled with swing and plants for relaxation. This garden creates a relaxing area for everyone including visitors where people who visit can be at ease and find peace. Having a trellis in the garden is to allow people who visits our garden to relax by playing the swing and also to act as a shade. Students can also spend time at the garden while waiting for class or even study in a comfort and greenish area while for the staffs, they can relax and take a break during teatime at our garden. Our garden also brings the concept of union which means joining people together. As our garden is a relaxing space provided for everyone, this garden would naturally allow people to get closer to one another and have closer relationship and friendship. People can have discussions and studies or a break at our garden and eventually gathers everyone together in this green space. The design of this proposed site is also based on combination of greenery with woods and bricks concept to produce a mixture of modern style at the same time a greenish style. The purpose of making the site greenish with plants is to enable the garden to be more eco friendly. Moreover, by using this concept, visitors can relax in this garden with the green atmosphere and relaxing mood of the site. This proposed site located on the balcony provides good and far view while the green plants bring comfort to the eyes which are also stress relieving.

In the roof garden the floor is without any ceramic tile the rough surface will bring disadvantage and harm to people. Therefore to improve the 10M x 10M,ceramic floor tile is the best choice. Within following site there will be filled up witth137 ceramic tiles. Before putting the ceramic tiles, the concrete surfaces first need to be balanced. The concrete surface is then needed to cover up with floor underlay and waterproof membrane.
