2. Wading through the Web
Citing Internet Sources
What does it mean to “Cite your sources”? It means
telling people where you got your information. Just as
you list books and encyclopedias in your bibliography,
you must also include the sources of information you got
from the Internet.
Why do you need to cite sources? Citing your sources
allows others to find the same information you found.
3. Wading through the Web
Citing Internet Sources
What information do you need to cite an
Internet source which you use in your
project?
The name of the site and the author (Who made the
website? A company? An organization? An individual?)
The day you found the information
The web address or URL
The copyright date for the website (usually found at the
bottom of the homepage)

Your bibliographic entry for an Internet source should
include whichever parts are available in the order listed
below. Let’s walk through an example. Look at the
following website on Vasco da Gama.

Title of the Page -- Explorers of the Millennium
Title of the Website -- ThinkQuest

Copyright Date – 1998 (found by clicking on “About this Site”)

You will use this information to create the entry for
your bibliography. Once you have the
information you need, you can use a website like
Son of Citation Machine to help you create your
entry.
The entry for this site would look like this:
