Citation Cheat Sheet: MLA Style Guidelines
Chelcie Hinders
General Format Guidelines:
• use legible, 12 pt. font
• double-spaced lines
• 1 in. margins on all sides
• do not skip extra spaces
between paragraphs
Header/Title Page:
• include your last name and
the page number in the top,
right-hand corner of every page
(headers must be in Times New
Roman)
• in the top left of the first page
of your paper, include:
Your Name
Instructor’s Name
Course (and section)
Number
Date
• center your title on the line
below your name and course
information
Works Cited Page:
• start a new page at the end of
paper/essay
• center the title “Works Cited”
at the top of the page
• do not skip extra spaces
between entries
• indent 0.5 in. (hanging indent)
on the second and following
lines of each entry
• entries are alphabetized by the
authors’ last names
Article from an Online Database:
Author’s Last name, First. “Title of Article.” Title of Journal,
volume # (issue #). Date: page numbers. Database Name.
Web. Date of Access.
YouTube Videos:
Name/Poster’s Username. “Title of Video.” Online Video Clip.
YouTube. YouTube, Date of Posting. Web. Date of Access.
Online Image:
Artist’s Name. “Title of Work.” Photograph. Website Name.
Publisher, Date Published. Web. Date of Access.
Non-Periodical Web Documents (Websites):
Editor, Author, or Compiler (if available). “Title of
Article/Page.” Name of Website. Publisher, Date Published
(or “n.d.” if no date is available). Web. Date of Access.
Films/Movies:
Title of Film. Dir. Director’s Name(s). Studio or Distributor,
release year. DVD (or Film).

Author’s Last name, First. Title of Book. City of Publication:

• Times New Roman 12pt. Font
• double-spaced lines
• 1 in. margins on all sides
Header/Title Page:
• header (called the Running Head) on
top left hand side cannot exceed 50
characters: “SHORTENED TITLE OF
PAPER”
• on the title page ONLY, the header is:
“Running Head: SHORTENED TITLE
OF PAPER”
• center your title in the middle of the
page:
Title of Paper (less than 12
words)
Author’s Name
Institution
Abstract:
•start a new page at the end of
paper/essay
• center the title “Abstract” at the top of
the page
• include a brief summary of key points
of research/essay, implications of
research, and ideas for future research
• keep between 150-200 words
References:
• on a new page, center the title
“References”
• every source cited in paper must
appear in the reference list, and every
entry in reference list must be cited in
the paper
• all lines after the first line of each
entry are indented ½ in. (hanging
indent)
• alphabetized by authors’ last names
• Include the Last name, 1st initial of all
authors (up to 7—if more than 7, use
ellipses after 6th author’s name and the
last author’s name)
• for unknown authors, use the
source’s title (shorten title for
parenthetical citations).
Academic Articles (Online & Print):
Author Last name, A.A., Last name, B.B., & Last name, C.C.
(Year). Title of article. Title of Periodical, volume #, (issue
#), pages. doi (or Retrieved from URL).
Tables/Charts/Graphs/Graphic Data:
Name of Research Organization. (Year). [explain the type of
data and the form it appears in (chart, graph, etc)]. Project
Name. Retrieved from URL.
Non-Periodical Web Documents (Websites, YouTube Videos):
List as much information as possible—you may have to hunt!
Author Last name, A.A., & Last name, B.B. (Date of
publication—or n.d. if no date is available). Title of
Document. Retrieved from URL.
Films/Movies:
Producer’s last name, F. (Producer), & Director’s last name,
F. (Director). (Year of Publication). Title of Motion Picture
[Motion Picture]. Country of Origin: Studio or Distributor.
Book:
Author’s Last name, A.A. (Year of Publication). Title of book.
Location of Publication: Publisher.
Edition of a Book (Textbook):
